Just had to share:

We've been dealing with a dial-up connection for YEARS, and I've hated it. DH absolutely refused to get a cable internet connection, and DSL was never available in our area. Until now......I just installed the modem and got everything set up, and we now have Verizon DSL. The slow $14.95 a month DSL, but it is sooooooo much faster than dial-up. Too bad I have to go to work tomorrow; I want to play!!!!

Next on my list: installing the wireless router so DS's computer can use the DSL, too. I think I'll do that next weekend.......

Only problem: when am I going to play Solitaire? I always used to play while I waited for website to load.

Welcome to the DSL world. It is pretty awesome. :flower:

I have Verizon DSL too (the $29 one), it's been over a year. I went from dial-up also, so it seems super fast to me!

I'm confused as to why he refused to get a cable connection but yet was ok with DSL? Cost? That's the only thing I can think of....

Wonder if their cable providers internet service sucks like it does here. I refused to get cable internet here because those I know with it have had way too many problems.

DH was concerned about the cost, plus reliability. Our next door neighbor has both cable tv and cable internet, and the cable truck is outside his house at least once a month. (We have DISH for our tv, not cable.)

Still trying to figure out this DSL - I just leave the modem on all the time, right, even though we shut off our computer at night and when we're at work?

I've been using DSL for years and love it. We were recently upgraded to 3M DSL to be part of a test group for VoIP, talk about fast.

I have DSL and never shut anything off

I have a firewall that updates regularly, antivirus stuff etc... all updates automatically and I've never had a problem.

heck- I got caught last night with my green light on here, when I was REALLY studying!

LOL

We just FINALLY upgraded to DSL a few months ago...I will never go back!

I had to laugh at your solitaire comment, though. That's exactly what I used to do while waiting for pages to load, and I don't think I've played a game once since we got it! :rotfl:

We also have the $14.95 verizon plan. It's a little slower than the $29 plan they offered, but honestly, it's not a big deal...maybe a site takes seconds longer but that's it.

Did you decide to go with the msn premium or the yahoo that they offer? We have the msn and love it.

Does it still tie up your phone line?

I think cable internet is fast, but the price is $39.99, plus $5.00 rental for the modem. You would think by now, I would own the modem. Stupid me, I should go buy one.

With the verizon dsl, your phone lines are open all the time. I connect the computer first thing in the morning and it stays that way all day!! :cool1:

always quiet - I just got the DSL installed last night and haven't chosen Yahoo or MSN yet. I was kind of leaning toward Yahoo, mostly because it looks like it offers McAfee security, and that's what we're using already; I figured sticking with McAfee would avoid problems with competing anti-virus software.

OhMari - no, it doesn't tie up your phone line at all. You get special filters for the phone line so you can be on the phone and the internet at the same time. The hardest part of installing the filter was getting access to the one phone jack hidden behind our headboard.

I still have to find the time to set up a wireless network so our DS's can use the DSL. So last night I was on the internet using DSL and DS13 was on the internet on the other computer using our dial-up connection. (I'm going to drop the dial-up once the network is up and running and everyone's been notified of our new e-mail addresses.) Pretty cool! :cool1:

The msn has the McAfee security as well. Both the virus protection and the firewall. There is also a pop up guard...and parental controls and "reports" that tell you who the kids have emailed/IM/ or what websites they have visitied (or even tried to visit!! ;) ). Also, the MSN has a free subscription to Encarta on line, complete with homework help (I don't know about you, but helping the kids with Algebra can be a nightmare!!). :teeth: I found the msn much more 'kid useful'!! :goodvibes

Well, DS15 has his own web page thru Yahoo/Geocities and likes to download music, so the Yahoo option sounded a little better in that respect. And DS15 is "our" algebra helper for DS13's homework!

But DS13 is the one who clicks before he thinks and finds all kinds of weird web sites - I'm more worried about him going somewhere he shouldn't and picking up a virus. So that sounds like the MSN option would be better for him.

What to do??
