Wow! NC does shut down when it snows

Born and raised in NC and I wouldn't have it any other way....I got what I needed Thursday night and I haven't left my house yet! However, I think I may go to work tomorrow (two hour delay) to Raleigh. It's not worth wrecking the car, I rather be safe than sorry.

I've been here for almost five years and have only seen 2-3 snows that have shut down everything. So, I can agree with the previous posters who like the low taxes compared to buying/maintaining equipment that seldom gets used...

But, being from the snow belt I still can't get use to the solar powered snow removal. I keep wanting to get out there and push it out of the way and move on........ :lmao:

We got about 6" here. The state has done a pretty good job of clearing the main roads. I still had to get out for work both Saturday and Sunday. I just take it nice and slow. We thought it was something that Wal-Mart closed at 4PM Saturday. McDonald's across the street from work didn't open Saturday but did open sometime Sunday. KFC stayed closed both days.

But as for side roads, the solar powered removal system is in full effect as no one touches those with a plow.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: I'm going to have to borrow that phrase!! :thumbsup2

I am still waiting to hear on DD's school system to see if they are going to be closed tomorrow. On our local news, they are saying some snow may come again next weekend-oh joy. The novelty of the snow has worn off for me.

I have two cousins that live in NC. One in Charlotte, one in Raleigh. Both are teachers and apparently at their schools, a snow day is made up by having school on Saturdays or it's taken out of their Spring Break!!! That's no fun!

Stay warm!

Before y'all laugh at us too much, consider this:

Up North y'all have snowplows, materials for de-icing the roads, snow tires, etc. You have to do it. If you didn't, you'd be snowed in for months -- and that's not realistic. You clear your roads, and that's WHY you can drive in snow. You pay $$$$$$ in taxes so that these things can happen. In addition, you own heavy coats, snow suits, and other winter wear. You pay extra for snow tires, chains, and all-wheel drive vehicles so you can keep going in the snow. Again, you have to do it.

In contrast, we get snow here 1-3 days PER YEAR. Some years we get none. I own about 45 acres in two different counties (some in the county, some in the city), and my all my property taxes together are just under $2000/year. Our taxes are low because we don't pay for all those snowplows and salt -- I'll take the inconvenience of shutting down the world occasionally to save that much on taxes. My heavy coat is probably what you wear in October. In our circumstances, IT MAKES SENSE to shut down the world for a couple days, make it a holiday, and stay home by the fireplace!

Haha, to be honest I was about to chuckle a bit after reading no school til Thursday. I thought, what?! We get a foot of snow and school is only canceled the first day!

I never realized or even thought about more southern states not having the equipment!

By the way ;) I've never owned tire chains (actually I don't think you can use them here...although I could be making that up), snow tires, or an AWD car.

We are out for the second snow day tomorrow. I live in Hillsborough NC and we got around 8 inches of snow and then some sleet on top of that. Main roads are clear, but side roads are still really bad.

The school I teach at will take our two remaining workdays to make up the snow days. Any more and I imagine they will take them from our spring break. DS15's school WILL take the days from their spring break, so I told him to enjoy his break now!

When I was going to school, if there were snow days, we knew to kiss spring break goodbye. Now they seem to lean towards Saturday school instead. Like last year, since the snow days were rather close to spring break and they figured that lots of parents had already made plans and didn't want to ruin them.

Looks like public schools in the triad are closed with a portion of the private schools being on a 2 hr delay. Looks like the universities are having classes as normal (High Point University, UNCG, Wake Forest). But then most of their students are either on campus or can take campus transportation.

Buncombe County Schools have closed already for tomorrow. While I understand and agree with the reasoning, my poor group home kids ( kids with very severe autism) NEED to be in school. They thrive on the structure of school and when school is out for lots of days in a row behavior gets worse and worse. I hope we can go back on Wednesday and not be out until Thursday. There is another storm on the way and it is looking like we might be out on Friday as well.

Well, I just checked out school system website....no school again tomorrow. They haven't decided when the makeup days are. We're already using a teacher workday in 2 weeks to makeup last Monday that we had Flooding issues. There's still a day in May they can use. Then it's either Saturdays or Spring break. Not sure which is worse.

Johnston County schools are closed tomorrow but they have to make it up on Saturday. So that means the husband will be working on Saturday. I work at NCSU but I'm 40 mins away from Raleigh so I'll go in a couple of hours late so I can miss the black ice.

I agree those kids do need to be there. That said, I hit MAJOR ice on Mills Gap Road tonight, as well as Lower Christ School and Baldwin Roads. There was minor ice on Sweeten Creek around 6 PM. As for the Royal Pines area leading into Glen Arden Elementary, that's nothing but an ice skating rink. The plows were at the corner of Mills Gap and Weston around 6:10 or so, but they were probably two days too late. It's so icy back there now, I'm not sure they are helping at all.

Lots of snow still on the ground here, although the streets have started melting. Even so, our school was OPEN for all students today....we homeschool! :rotfl:

Sharlon,

I live in the Carlyle Condominiums right on Sweeten Creek. I agree, the area is a MESS! Tomorrow should be an absolute joy, and I have to be at work by 8 to help with shift coverage. I am 'on call' this week and we have some staffing issues in the morning due to the school closure.

Mills Gap is often messy....and the section going from Sweeten Creek down to Hendersonville Rd. can be particularly hazardous because of the hill.

Be safe!!!!!

I know right where you are. We are across from the old golf course on Mills Gap. I hate patches of ice between Sweeten Creek and Weston in places that I haven't seen it before. Funny thing is, when I turned left out of our neighborhood heading towards Cane Creek it was much better.
We used to live in Glen Arden Estates. Now that area is a MESS!

Be safe too Linda!!!! Watch out for the crazies on the road who think that they can drive in this mess in their little sports cars.

Sharlon,

The old golf course? On Weston? Our best friends live in Turnberry. It is a very small world.

ITA!!! Although I'm considered to be in the north as I live in suburban Portland, Oregon... it hardly snows here. A day with 5 inches of snow is huge here and yes, the city gets shut down.

But we're also champions at driving in the rain.

I think there's about 2 plows for the entire metro area and it's a very hilly metro area so as you can imagine, one day of 5 inches of snow=city shut down for 2-3 days.
