wow !! im good

Just a quick list of things that are sensible to do on a Wireless Router for security reasons...

1. Change the access password. Most routers come with a default username and password e.g. Admin/Admin, it's always sensible to change the password and lots of people don't making their network really unsecure.

2. Hide the SSID (Network name). If it's not broadcasting itself then it's more difficult to connect to.

3. Only allow access to specific hardware. You should be able to set the router so it only allows pre-determined hardware to access the network. This is usually done by adding the computers MAC address to a list on the router and activating it to only allow access to the listed devices.

4. Set the security to use WPA or WPA2 encryption rather than WEP encryption as WEP can now be hacked in under 10 minutes using some freely downloadable programs from the internet.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, I hope you find the information useful.

wow i'm impressed, DH had to repair our laptop tonight as i'm too chicken to go near anything electrical with a screwdriver! Gill

Just make sure you get up now and again from the sofa as the weight will go on fast
I think I know what i'm talking about , :rotfl2:

I'm so envious, I can't do anything like that!. Will show DH Alan's advice as I think we've still got the password that came with the router kit. That's about the extent of my knowledge!

Oh boy, think it's time I got my act together and actually ordered mine...... ;)

I'm glad you got it sorted:thumbsup2 . I hope it is easy as i'm setting mine up on Tuesday after we have our cable broadband installed:cool1:

Well done, Nat. We have wireless too, sometimes wonder what I did without it now!

Laur's princess:

Inspired by Natalie I ordered my laptop yesterday, from the same site, chose free delivery (cos I'm a 'cheapskate') and the delivery man has just left

Going to fortify myself with several cups of coffee before attempting to set it, and the wireless connection, up though ;)

I'll be back tracking, through the posts on this thread, for the tips everyone has offered :thumbsup2

Alison which one did you go for, ther are some great deals on there, I am gearing myself up to order one
