WOW - I just sold my old gold........

I know silver is on.
Anyone know how well they can do with silver? I have a whole set of silverware that my mom gave since she bought new. I's really old, and bascially never used at all. If it's worth something, it may be worth sending it, but if it's not worth that much, then I will keep it.
I think I have read of others sending it in, but never heard what they got for it?

Hi! It has to be Sterling to begin with...not plate. My experience with sterling silver wasn't good. You will make more $ listing it on e bay or ETSY or someplace. :) Good luck.

I was doing some browsing and searche for silver prices. I may have read this wrong, but it really sounds like silver is worht crap compared to gold. If I read right, Gold is over $900 an ounce, while silver is only just over $12.00 an ounce. What a difference. :scared1: Too bad, as I have alot of old silver stuff. I also have an old silver tray that is really heavey, but has no markings. I'm pretty sure it's silver though, and it tarnishes like crazy.
How do you tell if something is gold or not? I had heard that if it got stuck to a magnut, it wasn't gold, but I have stuff that won't stick and I'm pretty sure they are not gold. :confused3
I am just kicking myself for hrowing away a bunch of broken gold peices before we moved 4 years ago.

Can I ask how much you sent? I have a ring that lost it's stone, 2 small light bracelet chains, and a diamond tennis bracelet given by an ex that I haven't worn for ten years or more. I have a few earings, but I really don't know if any are gold or not, but I'll send them in I guess.

If gold, there should be a (sometimes VERY small) rendering of the karat content/weight of the gold, usually ranging anywhere from 10K to 24K(Woo-hoo eh?) You might have to get out a magnifying glass or jewelers' loupe if you want to check over the earrings carefully.

Also on the talk of silver for those who have sent in. I have some silverware, I thought was silver, as my mom made me clean it as a kid and I was always under impression it was. But I looked at it today and on the blades and the eating parts of the fork and spoons it says stainless steel. Does that mean the whole thing is stainless, or is the handle perhaps silver? I guess I could take it to a jeweler an ask?

Sterling silver utensils will have the word STERLING (usually it's in caps) on them somewhere and usually the word is easy to find. Also if it's British (and sometimes other countries) there will be hallmarks which can identify the manufacturer and the year it was made on it.

That being said, I agree with other posters, you could have silverplate which *usually* isn't worth much UNLESS it's antique. *IF* the silverplate is Sheffield or another antique silverplate manufacturer then it *can* be worth not much or it can be worth a lot (usually not really a lot but at least a little something). You will NOT be able to sell the silverplate for the minimal silver content.

I would take the set to a jeweler and ask. Also, ask the jeweler if they can identify the pattern/manufacturer. If you have that info, you can look the pattern up on Replacements Ltd's website to see if they carry the pattern & how much *they* are selling it for. If you just want to get the $$$, you could always contact them and sell your set to them - you won't get a great price but at least you'll get something.

IF YOUR SET IS STERLING SILVER, DO NOT SELL IT FOR SCRAP. I repeat, DON'T DO IT!!! IF it is sterling, then the actual objects are worth more as objects regardless of the silver content. Also, IF YOUR SET IS A REAL ANTIQUE (even if it IS silverplate), it will be worth more as a set of objects.

Oh, and unfortunately silverplate tarnishes just as much as sterling does. When I was younger I had to polish my fair share of both sterling and silverplate (I *remember*.)

Ok after reading so many posts, I've decided to pack up my jewelry and see what I can get for it.

I've got 2 class rings (one silver, one black hills gold), one ring with a garnet in it, a chain, a herringbone bracelet, 2 charms -1 with small diamonds and 1 with a garnet. I'd be happy to just get something to go towards Disney.

They aren't picking up till tomorrow morning but I'll let you know what they offer. Wish me luck :o)

I'm not sure if all earings are marked. I have some that I know are gold, but have no markings on them, but they are kind of small. But I took them to a jeweler last year and it was confirmed that they were, even though they have no markings what so ever.

I sent in a dome ring (that was my heaviest piece), a small gold ring, a couple of bracelets, one small hoop earring, two pair of earrings, 2 chains, and a couple of small charms. I think that was all.

Thanks for this thread! MIL had a bunch of "junk" jewerly she wanted to put out for a yard sale at 25 cents a piece. I took it to a local place and got $23 for 2 little trinkets. Not much but worth the trip since my DDs were splitting the money for their banks.

Yeah, little stuff (like your earrings) doesn't always have a marking, but sometimes the gold content mark is kind of hidden. You're smart to take them to a jeweler so they could test it.

You'd be surprised the assumptions people can make about jewelry, I've seen 14K and up stuff at yard sales for *nothing*. One time I was helping out before a church bazaar and a woman had brought in a bunch of stuff that she assumed was just junk and costume. It *wasn't*, there was a diamond brooch, a gold & gemstone bracelet and 14K+ stuff...it was amazing. And this woman thought it was all just junk. Surprise! The church called her up and she came in & took it back...

Anyone know a good place to sell a platinum ring? The diamond isn't in it anymore, it's just a solitaire setting.:confused3

For anyone who has used US Goldbuyers....I got the email with the instructions. I don't have a paypal account..how does the MoneyGram or Western Union work? Or what about company check. Will be getting it picked up tomorrow....so they will get it Friday.

njmomboys2--

We opted to get the company check from USGoldbuyers. We sent them stuff on 2 different occasions, and both times I think our check came in about 4-5 days of getting the quote. :)

Just dropped off my stuff at Fed Ex......will keep everyone posted...sent the following:

6 bracelets
2 necklaces
5 rings
1 charm holder
15 charms
1 watch

Hoping for some vacation $$$$...leaving for Niagara/Toronto on Aug. 1st...

Do they send you an air bill with thier Fedex account number on it? I don't have a close place to drop off a fedex (that has an office where I can pay for it), so was wondering how you get the gold to them via Fedex.

After you go on the USGB website and enter your information they e-mail you instructions. Included in the instructions are exactly how to fill out the airbill and USGB's FedEx account # so they can cover the shipping cost.

Finally packaged up my few pieces and dropped it off at fedex this afternoon. I hope I get enough to add to my spending money for my trip in 2 weeks.

What did you pack your jewelry in? usgb said to have it packaged so no one would know what it was when fedex came, then to put it in the fedex container

I put my jewelry in a ziploc bag and then put the bag and paperwork inside a manila envelope and then put the envelope inside the fedex box.

I just booked a trip for me, DBF, DD14, DD21, DSiL25 and DGS1 (wow that is a lot of abbreviations!) for this December from the 17th-22nd. I am hoping I can get enough to upgrade the resort.

I thought Fed Ex came and picked it up from your house? I know the closest Fed Ex around me is over an hour away.

There is a Fed Ex drop box/with supplies at my post office which is a 2 minutes drive. So easier than waiting around for them to pick it up...but they will.

There is a fedex location right by my bank which is about a 5 minute drive from my house so it was easier for me to just pick up the supplies I needed and drop it back off instead of waiting for them.
