WOW - I just sold my old gold........

My husband found his wedding band from his first marriage the other day, so we're planning on selling it for gold. It's about a 8 mm 14K gold band in around a size 9. Anybody have a guess on what to expect to get from it?

You may call US Gold Buyers toll free and ask them. Although they don't normally really give that kind of estimate over the phone, because they need to see it first, for sometimes what is believed to be gold etc actually is not. Also payout is based upon weight, purity and mark, being 10k etc

Found out there is a Goldfellow in my town so I dropped by there today with some things...and walked out with a check for $1310.92! Had two necklaces (one a little thick but short), two or three bracelets, two rings, some charms and some broken pieces. I was floored! That'll pay for my Wine & Dine WDW trip, WDW Marathon weekend and I'll still have a bunch left over. WOW! I have some more pieces but I don't know that I want to give them up since they are tri-gold and some other pieces have sentimental value.

:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Like I have been saying lately, sentimentality holds no monetary value, precious metals do. With that said, if one believes that they will not be able to live with themselves if they sell their gold, etc. then one will be correct. And I strongly suggest in an event such as that, do not sell it, until you will not regret it. For once it is melted down, the music is over. Now, if you sell your jewelery as such, then there will always be an opportunity to buy it back.

Received an email confirmation from the Secure Gold Exchange with a link to the video showing them weighing the gold I sent in. It was a kinked up herringbone that couldn't be repaired. The scale they used to weigh it showed a weight of 8 grams, and I was offered 145.60. I accepted because I know I'll never get around to doing anything with the necklace if they send it back, but this seems kind of low:confused3. Not sure I'll use this service again.

What was their payout scale for Gold? US Gold Buyers begins at 90%. For silver it is at 80%, and to the best of my knowledge, that is a flat % for the silver.

I most recently spoke with Kevin at USGB, and he stated that business is back to normal, and that everything is fine, in light of Hurrican Irene. Initially Fed Ex was not able to deliver due to airport closures, however again, since then, back to business as usual.

I went to a local place the other day that offered me $186.00 for my jewelry, and coins.

I am going to send to USGB and see what they have to offer now the coins included some nickles and the jewelry included 10kt and sterling. We will see what happens.

I went back to Goldfellow on Friday with my Sterling Silver, one more gold necklace I ran across and a very, very, very thin gold bracelet. Got another $252 and some change. So between my first and second trips, $1683 and change for things that were broken, too small or no longer being worn (at age 41 I really didn't need sweet 16 or HS grad year charms LOL). That'll be paying for my next 3 (maybe even 4) Disney trips! Gotta love it :thumbsup2

How are you getting 3 trips out of $1683?

Just a guess, but I see that Moonangel is a Florida resident. If she has an annual pass and gets good deals on value or moderate resorts, it's definitely possible to get several long-weekend type trips out of $1600.

Yes, I am a FL resident (Ft. Lauderdale area) and do have an annual pass (FL residents can pay monthly instead of all at once for APs). I usually stay at values unless I can find an amazing deal at a moderate and most trips are Friday-Sunday type so I usually only need 2 nights of hotel. I bring food with me for snacks and sometimes breakfasts or lunches...gas is about a tank and a half to get up and back, around $60 or so, plus maybe $30 RT for tolls. Usually do counter service for any meals I get in the parks, maybe one table service...and not always on property---I've signed up with Bahama Breeze, LoneStar Steakhouse and some other restaurants and almost every trip I have coupons they email out for $ off so I can still get great food in a sit-down restaurant for well below what I'd pay on-property without having to drive too far.

Being semi-local does have some great advantages, but selling that extra gold really helps a ton! I'm thinking of maybe doing a gold party too since Goldfellow gives the host 10% of what they pay out to guests. Anything to help pay for my Disney (and Disney race) addiction :rolleyes1

24k is not pure gold. They actually had a graph on the today show the other day about it because gold is so high right now. They can't make jewelry out of pure gold as it wouldn't hold up. pure gold is soft.

edit to add, it is probably the purest gold you can get though, not being a bar of gold. I have read a few things and there are mixed things stating 24 K is pure gold, while others say it's still mixed....I guess it depends on who you go to.

24k IS 100% pure gold - that is how it is defined. You cannot buy any jewelry that is marked 24k. 22k is the highest gold content jewelry you can buy and it is very soft; it is very popular in India.

In the US 18k and 14k is the norm for jewelry stores while department stores carry 10k.

Even American Gold Eagle coins are 22k. The only recent 24k coin was the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle.

...wanted to bump this up....

I have old jewlery from my Grandmother-it wasn't hers, she inheirited it, and hated it. I have two heavy bracelets, one is called a panther bracelet, it's very old. The other is really cool, it's very intricate, and I've worn them both often. Together they are about 4 oz, so I think that would convert to around 3.64 troy oz (?)

I could always use the money. Especially right now. I'm slightly torn about selling them, and family keeps telling me I should keep them because they are nice. But I don't really have any emotional attachment to them, other than they're nice pieces of jewlery. BUT, gold prices are really high right now.

Suggestions?

Personally, I wouldn't sell it. The big thing is you are still wearing this jewelery. You like it enough to wear and the bracelets sound like jewelry that is unique. And it did come from your grandmother. Will be nice to pass down these pieces someday. Money is soon spent. I sold some of my gold for $910 and it was gone by the end of the week (unexpected expenses). We can always "use" the money; but once you sell these pieces they're gone.

If these are old pieces they could be worth considerably more as jewelry pieces rather than for their gold content. Selling them online would be the way to go I think.
They sound beautiful!

They are. The one a jeweler called a panther bracelet is very wide and flat and has links-my DD says it moves like a conveyer belt. The other one is made up of bunches of circles with a gold ball on them that are all linked together. I haven't worn either one in about a year because the claspes broke. I have no emotional attachment to them, and since I wasn't paid for two months over the summer, I could really used the $$$.

There are many many many many (you get the picture LOL) vintage panther bracelets out there. If you can see what company made the piece, what grade of gold it is, whether there are saphires or other nice stones in it.

Feel free to post a picture here if you want. Others too might want to see what you're talking about and can give you their thoughts on whether you should sell it for the gold or sell it as a vintage piece.

Immediate pros and cons are selling it for the gold is fairly fast, within a week I'd say you'd have the money. Selling it as a vintage item could take some time depending on the venue you use to sell it.

Good luck deciding!

What is gold fellows payout for gold? TIA

I'm not sure; they have a chart on their website (it's on the Gold Prices page) that shows what they pay per pennyweight based on 10K/14K/18K/etc. They also have a calculator on that page-you can enter the weight of what you have of each type and it will give you an estimate. Though the calculator for me came up about $250 less than what they wound up giving me...very nice surprise for me ;)
