WOW! Alcohol to be Served in the MK

I am torn as well. If it was Walt's wishes, I think they should abide by them. On the other hand I would enjoy a nice adult beverage but having to only get it at BOG is a little annoying. Either serve it in the whole park or don't serve it at all. There are other restaurants in MK that should be able to serve alcohol as well.

But I have a question? Before he died was it his wish just to leave MK alone or was EPCOT included? If so, they dishonored his wishes a LONG time ago. So it seems all bets are off if that is the case.

This really doesnt phase me in the least. I am a fan of having a beer with dinner or a glass of wine, but in all honesty who cares when you can go anywhere else in WDW and have it. I really dont think it is that big of a deal

Walt did possess a lovely master plan:goodvibes for a safe, family friendly park. Don't forget that he had no issue with approving the concept of a VIP lounge along the lines of that he observed at the World's Fair: the 33 Club that serves alcohol in disneyland. imo surprised they didn't open one in the MK by now.

As for people getting drunk in the park (unless they have a really low tolerance level or the hot florida sun caused an issue) i'd think that it'd be be hard to accomplish over a rushed dinner where the servers strive to turn over the table.

That said, I do hope MK never decides to go the F&W festival route ala Epcot. We enjoy it but sadly have observed many guests looking the worse for wear. It's all about moderation and knowing one's limits.

Thanks for the very rational post. I agree with you. It's a non-issue. All of this "rolling in grave", etc is just hyperbole. If alcohol is so bad, then it wouldn't be in the other parks (or even legal). The morality police can continue to police their own families and leave the rest of us alone.

:drinking1 ;)

:)

Finally MK gets an upscale dining establishement and offering beer and wine is appropriate for the venue. It's not as if Disney is installing beer carts all over the park. I don't believe this decision desecrates the integrity of Walt's dreams and hopes for the Magic Kingdom! Walt though a dreamer, was still a business man and times change!

I often go to Disneyland Paris, where alcohol is server also in the Disneyland park. I've never seen anyone looking like he abused of it.
Probably the huge presence of children make people be considerate.

However, Walt's wish...

I'm not a fan of the decision. It just removes one more iota of Walt's legacy. You have the statues, but you are not honoring a value he thought was important.

Bobbi:goodvibes

Well put, I am upset more about the principle of it. MK always seemed to be more the family park and I liked that it was dry...now they add the ultimate family extension in MK and add this as well? was it really needed?

I don't drink. But if wine and beer help bring an upscale dining option to MK, I'm all for it. I have zero fear of MK turning into Mardi Gras.

I'm sure the alcohol at MK debate has raged internally for years and it now looks like the bean counters have prevailed. Having said that, I don't think this is the end of civilization as we know it.

I think it makes perfect sense. DH and I will be enjoying a nice glass at BOG when we dine there in March. Maybe this will be a test of how it goes in the MK and they'll expand it to other sit down restaurants. I don't see them selling alcohol from a cart like in Epcot.

I agree. While its seems minor, it really changes the whole idea of the magic kingdom being a clean cut, fun filled and alcohol free place.

Smoking: out (well, more exactly, restricted but not out yet)
Alcohol: in

Doubt Walt would have approved of either. Times change & we roll with them, hopefully for the better.

I just hope this one change will open up the door for more needed changes that they've always leaned on the "but Walt designed it that way" excuse.

Count this family as a plus for it. Husband always makes the comment about going into the park about not being able to have an iced cold beer in the heat of the day to cool off.

Me, I don't care as long as the popcorn vender stays at the end of main street with cold diet cokes....all is right with the world.

I have no problem with alcohol (I enjoy it far too often). But for the purist in me I think it would be nice to stay true to what Walt wanted for the MK. No moral issue here. Just thinking about the vision that Walt had.

Also agree that if they do it in one restaurant, add it to the other TS places. A tavern after all is no tavern without beer. Don't use the "it's a French restaurant so it doesn't make sense not to have French wine" line. That's a bunch of crap.

Agreed, a Sam Adams would theme nicely in the liberty tree tavern...but the purist in me gives me mixed feelings as you said...I know Walt also said the park would never be done but I had always kinda admired the way they had stuck to the no alcohol rule...

Re:Walt rolling...He allowed smoking and not drinking, so I'm not sure he's the moral authority on what's appropriate in a theme park. And they still allow smoking in more places than alcohol.

I don't get what the big deal is...
* alcohol is served everywhere else
* alcohol is not required to make people horribly rude and annoying (as we've all witnessed)
* I need a drink more in MK (after fighting crowds) than any other park ;)
* I think themed drinks during MNSSHP and MVMCP would be fun
* I think themed drinks in the lands would be fun too (pina colava in adventureland, sam adams in liberty square, cool futuristic drinks with glowing ice cubes in tomorrowland, etc)

So NOT a fan of this. Walt is rolling. Let the booze flow elsewhere!!!!!
Boo

I'm already getting sick of the "Walt is rolling in his grave" bit. I just don't see this as a very big deal. We're talking about one meal a day at one restaurant in the park. It's not like people will be able to walk around Fantasyland with a beer now. And while we're at it, it's just beer and wine. The tables turn over much too quickly at the park restaurants for anyone to conceivably get wasted on beer or wine.

For all the people wailing about what a tragedy this is, do any of them avoid visiting Epcot, DHS, AK, DTD or the water parks because alcohol is served there? As with any other decision, you'll have people who choose not to drink and you'll have idiots who overindulge. But for the most part, I'm guessing the change will be negligible.

mmmm, rum and Dole Whips!!

I like where you're going with this. :thumbsup2
