Imagine finding this in your DVC unit:

Dear Valued Guest,
Thank you for choosing our hotel for your accommodation needs. This room is designated as a non-smoking room. If you choose to smoke in this room, a fee of $150.00 will be posted to your room folio.
This fee covers the cost to professionally deep clean & fumigate smoking odors. Our procedure ensures that future guests are given the non-smoking room they have requested.

We spent last night in a Comfort Inn which is where we found this notice. My DH thought that I was crazy for sitting there and copying it, but I told him that the DVCers would love to see how this is handled at other hotels.

I know that I would have been a lot happier if this had been in place at the BCV when someone had smoked in our room.

I think this would be great, although maybe a slightly larger fee should be posted on all rooms larger than a studio. There is nothing worse to someone with bad allergies stuck with unconfortable sleeping conditions for a whole vacation. Maybe this is a suggestion that could be passed on when they mail a survey after your return home.

I can't remember where (it may have been the Fairfield Inn) had the same sign when we where in MA last year.

I thought it was to the point. Just wonder if they actually charge it and actually do the work

..I agree,the fee should be much larger. If I'm a smoker staying in a non-smoking unit for a week or two, maybe I see this notice and figure "hey,I can afford that, smoke'm if ya got'em".

I've never seen it before, and the first thing I thought of was that studio at BCV.

InstImpres, who knows if they actually enforce it or not, but, if it makes one smoker think twice about lighting up, it served it's purpose.

I think that $150.00 is a pretty hefty fee and would deter most of the smokers who do this.

I think it is a great idea. My youngest has asthma and making sure that our room is smoke-free has become much more important than it once was.

Why should DVC and eventually the members have to pay to clean a non-smoking room that the user decided to smoke in.

While staying at the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneylnd in May 2001, my husband and I were forced to vacate the hotel around 2 a.m. because the fire alarm sounded. The reason - someone was smoking in their room - this in a non-smoking resort. I was told the next day that the guest would be charged an additional $500 because the room had to be completely cleaned ( the room was Concierge - maybe that is why it cost so much).

They had signs similar to that at the Hilton in Anaheim. We were there for a conference last August. The sign in our room did not give a dollar figure. It just stated that you would be charged to have the entire room professionally cleaned if you smoked in it. I was glad because I was sharing the room with a co-worker and she smoked. I just told her that I wasn't paying for her to smoke in the room and she decided to go to the pool to light up. But here's the kicker, two other co-workers did smoke in their non-smoking rooms during that conference and weren't charged a dime. I wonder how many hotels back up the warning?

That was my point - I think it depends if they outright leave cigarettes to be seen and if the people cleaning the room are or are not personally sensitive to smoke. Oh well, at least it discourages some!

Regina --- Please send this in to MS. You wouldn't think that this would put a great strain on the maintenance budget. And if it prevents them from having to take a room out of inventory until it's clean, that's all to the better for everyone.

I wonder if this applies to smoking on the balcony of a non smoking room. If they did this at WDW it would certainly eliminate a lot of controversy on the boards.

If a penalty was instituted, and enforced, it would have to be at all of the resorts and not just confined to DVC.

Nanajo, that's very interesting that the Grand Californian is entirely non-smoking. I wasn't aware of that.

We can always hope that WDW puts some muscle behind it's non-smoking policies.
