Inspired by the "you can tell you're getting old" thread. I was wondering if people really want or would want to live to be 100. No special abilities, just be that old.

Personally my answer would be a resounding NO. Considering the callous way that I have taken care of myself up to this point...there is little chance of that happening anyway.

Added...I think we all can agree that if we could keep our minds and be physically able to be independent, it would be OK to live that long. The problem is that usually one or the other goes. That's what I am basing my question on.

I agree...I have an aunt who is 104 & pretty good-considering her age! I want to live a good life-not too short but no way do I want to be a burden to my family & I can't help but think after a certain age-it happens...

As long as I had my memory and I wasn't a burden to my family. I'm willing to live that long or longer

Yes, I would as long as I was of sound mind and I could still get around with reasonable dexterity. I guess I want it all, though!

Heck yes, as long as I could still take care of myself and function.

I was watching COPS last night, and there was a 96 year old woman who's great granddaughter had stolen her car, and she came to pick it up... anyways, she was in sound mind, could walk just fine, talk just fine, and drive herself around. If I could be like that, yes, absolutely.

Yes, but my family lives to their 80's, 90's, and my great-grandfather lived to 104 with minimal health issues and with their mental faculties intact. There has been no dementia or alzheimers on either my mom's or dad's side. I only want to live as long as I am mentally intact.

Yes, with the stipulation that I am mentally intact, and physically in decent shape being a close second.

DH's GF lived to be 93, and could still mow his yard and clean out his own gutters. My GM lived to be 90 and would drive her "elderly" friends to the store; she thought it was such a shame they could no longer drive.

As long as I'm in good health, and have my mind intact, I want to live to see my great grandchildren, and maybe some great-greats!

Sure, as long as my mental and physical health doesn't get much worse than it is now. With the right bionic parts I should be good for another forty years.

I want to live as long as I can maintain a relatively high quality of life. If you chart my life in a 2 dimensional graph with the X axis representing age and the Y axis representing quality of life I want my line to be as close to horizontal as possible with a straight vertical drop at the time of death. I don't want a line that drops at a 45 degree angle for years towards death. As long as the area under my Quality of Life graph is maximized I want to live as long as I can.

Of course the key is to know that what I do in my 20's, 30's, and 40's will have a lot to do with how my quality of life is in my 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond. Waiting until then to worry about it would be too late, it requires a long term view.

I wouldn't want to live to be that old if it meant losing my memory or not being able to do anything for myself.

Yes, but only if I am healthy but physically and mentally. :goodvibes

We're currently planning my DGM's 100th bday party for April, so I can honestly say that if I could be as healthy and mentally sharp as her, you betcha!!!

Terri

We'll ask all of you again when you are 99. ;)

I would love to live to be 200 as long as I had my mind, I wasn't a pooping dribbling mess, and I was still independant. If my life consisted of sitting in a chair or bed then no.

Like others have said, only with a good quality of life. My Nana was doing well up to 100 and now has really declined. She's 103 (will be 104 in June) and is in a nursing home, basically bed ridden with poor memory.
There are definitely worse things than dying.:sad1:

If I could live to be a very active and healthy 100, not a burden to my family, then yes, I would like to live to be 100. If I'm going to have Alzheimers or be bedridden with diabetes and heart disease and infection, then no. I don't want to live my life in a shell of a body until my organs finally fail.

Living to 100 is not one of my goals. If it means sitting in a chair or bed all day not being able to do much, then no. I'm all about quality, not quantity. That's why I do things that I want to do in life now. You never know how long you'll have. :)

As long as I'm healthy and my mind is still functioning, of course I do.
