ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada — Bikini- and Speedo-clad tourists beware.

The Caribbean island of Grenada says it recently began enforcing an indecent exposure law banning bathing suits away from the beach, as well as saggy pants that reveal the underwear.

Police commissioner James Clarkson says violators are usually just ordered to cover up. But the law allows for a $270 fine or six months in jail.

At least a few locals are contesting fines.

Clarkson said Friday that cruise ships usually inform passengers of proper non-beach attire, but "from time to time, there is the one or two who take their chances."

He said a few months ago police ordered several tourists wearing swimwear at a fort to return to their cruise ship and put on some clothes.

I don't even walk in my house like that, no need to subject anyone to that! :scared1:

That only happens in those stress dreams I have on occasion.

I also show up at school in my underwear. :upsidedow

No, but I distinctly remember going into Publix in my bikini when I was about 20 (hey, it was in the Florida Keys!). I remember not being sure if it was appropriate or not. Now that I'm in my 50s, I KNOW it's not appropriate.:rotfl:

Ewwwwww. I always get wierded out by seeing people in bathing suits and such away from areas like pools or beaches. Just not right.

If I was in Grenada I wouldn't think twice about it. If I'm somewhere warm & surrounded by beaches, I think it's only natural - maybe a sarong too. I wouldn't mind others others doing the same either :confused3 .

I don' t have an opinion about bikinis but I don't care what kind of body you have-speedo bathing suits and banana hammock underwear skeeve me out-BAD:scared:

Well I went to Fort Lauderdale for Spring Break. I'll leave it at that.

When I was young...say early 20s...I didnt see anything wrong with walking around in my bikni...and I definately would have thought it was okay in the Caribbean. 16 years, and 2 children later....I dont wear a bikini anywhere !

We cruise a lot. Once in a great while, I've noticed someone wearing fewer clothes coming/going at Port on a cruise. Usually, a woman wearing a bikini top and sarong-style skirt thing... that's fine for the beach itself, but not really appropriate if you're going in any stores, IMO. Some of the Caribbean islands are more conservative than others also.

We usually wear a t-shirt and shorts over our swimsuits. We did have one trip where I had DS wearing his swimtrunks (baggies not speedo) and a t-shirt. His baggies ripped right down the crotch as we got in the ferry boat to head back to the ship. Poor kid had to walk back to the ship from the ferry dock with a beach towel wrapped around his hips.

Nowadays, DS7 races in swim meets and wears jammers (form-fitting like speedos but have legs that go down to mid-thigh). Personally, I think they would be inappropriate to wear walking around in stores or into restaurants... they pretty much grab every curve, if you KWIM? I'd have him wear some baggie shorts over them if DS chose to wear jammers to the beach.

I grew up in a beach town (Lake Michigan, but beachy nonetheless). Kids and teens would always walk around town in bathing suits with sandy bare feet. A lot of times the girls would wear a towel or shorts covering their bottom halves, but you wouldn't think twice seeing someone in the grocery store in their bathing suit.

Forgot to answer the OP - only for about 10 million dollars would I walk around outside of my home in a bikini.

No I wouldn't, but that is only because I don't look good in a bikini anymore. ;)

But they really had to make this a LAW?? WTH? As long as people aren't hanging out of thier bathing suits, who really cares?

I've been in Grenada a few times. It is a very conservative country. Most of the kids are dressed in Catholic school uniforms. I can see how it would not be welcomed there.

Why yes i would...in the summer I'm often out and about in my flowered speedo, paisley tank top and pink crocs.

Well we are boaters on the lakes/rivers here and swimsuits are normal. You pull up, tie off on the dock and go to eat. Now I will toss on shorts and a T-shirt.;)

They just ask for shoes, well something on your feet.:rotfl:

Grenada is not the only island community that has that kind of law. I have been to Grenada a bunch of times and I would not want to spend a single minute in their jail so there is no way I would try it... As far as the policy, I would not want to show my body off anyhow so I don't care one way or another. The islands are their homes however, and if they don't want to be exposed to undergarments and bathing suits, so be it.
