Would you report your neighbor for an abused and neglected dog?

Our neighbors have a small white dog, looks like a Bichon mix.

They've had him for 2 years. He's always outside, rain, sleet, snow, or hail he's out there. He does have a dog house and a fenced in yard.

I noticed he's not been in the yard for the last 3 days. I thought maybe they just got rid of him.

Early this morning I noticed that he's back. I called him by his name, usually he comes right over to the fence, I reach over and I pet him, sometimes giving him one my my dog's treats, which he takes like he hasn't eaten in days.

He didn't come over to the fence today. He can barely move. He is holding his left hind leg up as to not walk on it. To be blunt and to the point, it looks like someone beat the crap out of him. :(

I just called my Vet to see who I'd report it to, as our phone directory doesn't have a local SPCA. They referred me to Animal Control or the Sheriff's office.

Now, if I call, they're going to know who called, and I'm afraid they'll retaliate. They are from Guatemala, the man speaks English, but his wife does not and he works most of the day. I don't feel comfortable going over there and expressing my concern.

What would you do?

I know deep down in my heart the dog is in misery and something should be done. :(

I would just just keep care of the dog

DH would tell me not to get involved! But if I were by myslef..I think I might call the Humane Society and just have it checked out!

Why could you not make a call and stay annoynomous(sp)?I would call and not care what the neighbors thought. They dont deserve a dog if they cant care for it properly.

I would call. Animal Control will keep it anonymous. At least, I know they will here. You could call and ask.

Poor dog. How can people be so cruel?

Yes, you should do something about it. It's sad that people think they can treat something like that, just because it's a dog. I'd report it the first time I saw something like that.

I would absolutely call the SPCA in a second! Just as if I would call the authorities if I thought a child, or elderly or handicapped person were being abused... Better to have them check it out and find that all is ok, rather than ignore it and let the innocent suffer. :( Sorry you have to witness that. :(

It appears they've been hiding the dog for the last three days in their garage that has a side door that opens up into the yard. Either that or the dog couldn't walk to go outside. He is all nasty looking in the back, like he has been going to the bathroom all over himself.

I'm making the call.:(

Any chance you could wait until they're not home, and then call? That way, if they put two and two together (or you could even own right up to it) you could say, "Oh you weren't home and your poor little dog looked like he was injured.. I didn't know what to do or how to reach you, so I thought it would be best to call Animal Control so they could check on him..."

Sound plausible? I'd believe that - or then again, maybe I'm just gullible - LOL..

I'd report them. Just be aware that nothing will likely get done.

I don't think that's true, something should be done no matter what. The SPCA here will investigate matters like this.

I totally understand your concern for your family but I would call the SPCA or other entity entrusted with animal welfare. Would your neighbors know for certain who reported them? If so, maybe C. Ann's explanation would work. I would call in any case.

In the meantime I would take some food and water to the dog and continue doing so until someone comes to inspect.

In a heartbeat... I'm so glad you're calling! The world needs more Blondies! Poor little baby!!! I would be so tempted to...er... uh... help him find a new home. :o Sigh.

Animal Control is on voicemail. And the Sheriff's office referred me back to them again.

DH is really afraid of retaliation. All it would take is a piece of meat laced with anti-freeze and then our dog will suffer.

They'll know it was us because we are the only other neighbors with a chainlink fence. Everyone else has a privacy fence so they wouldn't be able to see what we can living right next door to them.

Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As the new Sex in the City commercials say.....In a New York Minute!

I say keep calling and leave a message. There is only a chance they will retaliate....it is pretty certain they are abusing this dog. Maybe they need the help too. Some people dont realized how much work and responsibility it is to have an animal. Obviously they dont and it shows through their abuse and neglect. Besides.....it might be just the tip this family needs to get help.....if they abuse their dog, chances are if they have children they are also not treated well.....getting the authorities into the house might help that!
