Would you report your neighbor for an abused and neglected dog?

Our neighbors have a small white dog, looks like a Bichon mix.

They've had him for 2 years. He's always outside, rain, sleet, snow, or hail he's out there. He does have a dog house and a fenced in yard.

I noticed he's not been in the yard for the last 3 days. I thought maybe they just got rid of him.

Early this morning I noticed that he's back. I called him by his name, usually he comes right over to the fence, I reach over and I pet him, sometimes giving him one my my dog's treats, which he takes like he hasn't eaten in days.

He didn't come over to the fence today. He can barely move. He is holding his left hind leg up as to not walk on it. To be blunt and to the point, it looks like someone beat the crap out of him. :(

I just called my Vet to see who I'd report it to, as our phone directory doesn't have a local SPCA. They referred me to Animal Control or the Sheriff's office.

Now, if I call, they're going to know who called, and I'm afraid they'll retaliate. They are from Guatemala, the man speaks English, but his wife does not and he works most of the day. I don't feel comfortable going over there and expressing my concern.

What would you do?

I know deep down in my heart the dog is in misery and something should be done. :(

I would have made the call already.

I, too, would take the dog and place him in a safe place. Then, I'd find him a loving home. I couldn't care less if it's illegal. People like that don't deserve to have animals, and abusing a dog like that is 10 times worse than taking one and giving it a loving home.

Seeing the care and concern in this thread makes me very happy.

There ARE people who care. The office manager at my old job was a saint of a woman who used to trap and rescue abandoned and unwanted cats around her neighborhood. She paid out of her own pocket to get many cats spayed or neutered, so they couldn't bring more unwanted kittens into the world. And she took so many into her home...she once had 15 or so cats in her home...she took care of everything by herself. Local shelters wouldn't take them off her hands because they were already at capacity. :(

Blondie, can you update us please?

I beg of you to call if you haven't already. I know you worry about retaliation, but this dog shouldn't suffer and if you have children they need to see the right thing being done.

If the animal control officer doesn't work weekends, I'd keep pestering the cops.

Blondie,

I am glad you decided to make the call. Have you managed to get through yet or are you still getting voicemail?

I hate it when people do not take care of their pets. Just the other day we had a little white dog running around the college campus where I work. Poor thing was trying to get into one of the buildings. It left before I got to the door, so here I was following the dog around campus until I could flag down security. Then I was told that our maintanence guy had already called the owner and the owner said the "dog wanders all the time and he will come back when he wants". ARRRGGGGHHH! So I told the security guard that they should call Animal Control. The dog was running around in the parking lot by this time! I was concerned that he would be either hit or cause a student to get into an accident by trying to avoid hitting the dog.

Finally security called Animal Control who came out and attempted to catch the pup. Took a few tries and about an hour but they finally did. They also took a statement from the person who called the owner and our security who made a second call because there is actually a state reg about dogs on campus. AC said they would be fined and possibly have the dog taken away if other complaints were already on file. Sometimes it does work/help to make the call.

Sorry guys, but I work weekends!

I finally was able to speak to a person at Animal Control yesterday afternoon who took down all the details, address, their names, etc.

Since I wasn't home from 2:30 on yesterday afternoon (and I'm still not home), I didn't get to see if they made a visit or not, DH and the boys didn't happen to notice the Animal Control truck over there, but that doesn't mean they weren't there.

I haven't seen the dog since yesterday morning, so I don't know if he's still over there or not.

I'll be home all day tomorrow, so I'll be able to check the situation out better.

As far as stealing the dog, I'm not about to jump the fence and trespass on their property.

I hope they came and got the dog, but something tells me they didn't. Like I said, I'll be able to find out more tomorrow!

But the poor dog suffers daily.

Can you live with that?

I'm sorry but someone who watches abuse take place and not take action is as guilty as the abuser.

that is a bit harsh. She does have her pets and children to be concerned about.

:(

Why the coldhearted remark LUAnmial?

Thanks for making me feel soooo much better tonight.

Blondie, I am glad that you are trying to help that poor dog.

WHAT!!!!

She's trying to help a dog and because she doesn't risk her life and family's, she to blame for the dog? I don't think so!

If LuAnimal is interested, I'd be happy to send her the address, and she can drive up here, break into their garage and steal the dog.

Because you are the only one there who can do something about it, thats why. Animal control can't the laws restrict them (which I am sorry for), but you are there watching it happen on a daily basis.

Don't ask me to make you feel better for not taking a stand and rescuing the dog you are watching suffer. I'm sorry but the dramatics Serena states of risking her life and family's doesn't fly.

2 wrongs don't make a right, breaking the law because someone else is is not going to fix the situation. I have pets myself and they are members of my family, I'm a volunteer for dog rescue, but I would NEVER put myself or my family at risk to STEAL a dog that I THINK is being abused. Animal control exists for a purpose- let them do their job.

Sounds like a good plan.

Yeah, okay....whatever.

If it meant that much to you, you'd think nothing of driving up here to save the dog yourself.

So put your money where your mouth is and come on up. I'll be happy to PM you driving directions.

Goodness, Blondie is trying to help this animal and all you can do is flame her? I don't blame her a bit for trying to handle things the right way and I bless her for trying. And I am involved in animal rights organizations so I'm well aware of these things and how sad they are.

Again, thanks Blondie for taking an interest.

Lu, get a reality check and stop being so judgemental.
