Would You Rent DVC Points?

Yes. We do it every time. Make sure you have a reliable owner and get a contract.

On renting points, everyone indicates how much cheaper it is to rent than to book through CRO. But, that only seems to be the case if you stay five weeknights but no weekends. Renting points for weekends seems to be more expensive than paying rack rate. Also, there are tons of specials out there these days to book villas through CRO.

Don't forget also that you get daily maid and turndown service with a CRO reservation, but not with points rental.

In our situation, it is $95 per night for a standard view studio at BWV on a week night and about double that $190 per night for the same room on the weekend. Compare this to the normal rates through CRO for this room is $335 per night during the same timeframe (value season). No matter how you slice it---that's a huge savings during the week AND on the weekends. We wouldn't have been able to stay at BWV otherwise.

I agree you can get a cheaper price paying through CRO than renting. We are currently getting a 2 BR at Bay Lake Tower with the 4/3 promotion. People are asking $13-14 per point for BLT rentals - there is no way we could afford to stay there if we were renting points for the same 7 nights. Also, we are staying at SSR for the weekend - renting through Disney CRO using my AAA rate saved me several hundred dollars versus renting at $9-$10 per point for that weekend. It makes sense to see if you can get any deals first through CRO. If only rack rate is available, renting points is the way to go.

RENT THE POINTS!!! :thumbsup2 Fortunently for me I have a very good friend that is in DVC. He is always willing to rent me points at a good rate per point. We have rented from him the past two years in a row. 2007 we stayed in a studio at OKW for 4 nights and last October at AKV in a savannah view studio for 6 nights. We stayed at AKV for 6 nights for $800. If I remember correctly through Disney it would have been double that just for the room.
Both times saved me lots of money compared with what it would have cost me to stay through Disney.:woohoo: I say if you can find someone you can trust to make the reservations and you can decide the dates 11 or 7 months out depending on the renters home resort, do it.
I would not have been willing to pay or afford to stay at a delux resort because of the cost (:scared1:) had it not been for renting from my buddy We love AKV now and will probably by a resale there in the next year or two.

I think renting can be a great way to enjoy a villa at a lower price. As others have said, find a renter who is reliable. Someone who has many posts over a long period of time. It is a risk, but then its a risk for the renter too.

But definitely check for deals on a rack rate reservatioin. It may not be much more if you get a deep discount and if daily housekeeping and flexibility is something that you need for peace of mind, it might be worth paying more.

I hope it all works out, we love staying in a DVC villa and I am sure you would too!

We have always rented through Disney for our BWV (2 bedroom). Guess I like to have controll over my reservations plus I like daily housekeeping. We are AAA members and usually have them book our trip through Disney and since Aug. is considered value season when we go we have always gotten a good discount on our package (villa, tickets, meal plan).

Agree with this. I recently priced a 1BR SSR Villa w/a AAA discount - 2800 with tax. The points for that stay is 252, so at $10 a point, a rent would be $2520. For the extra $280, I'd rather have control over my reservation, and not have the "trust" factor and prepayment issues.

It's fascinating how so many resort questions are answered by the "rent point" option. I would never consider it.

Back in '07 I posted a request for renting points at BWV and I consider myself lucky to find a trustworthy couple who live in Texas who we will be renting from again in '10 as I will be going to Disney for the 44th time as a Happy 44th Birthday present to myself and my family and my DS and DD each get to bring a guest. We're going in July and we've rented rented 2 studios at BCV (my wife's and my favorite resort) for $224 per nt per room. I think I speak for at least most of us addicts when I say if money was no object we'd all be DVC members. For some renters, this is an annual trek, for others maybe it's a trip of a lifetime. And maybe for some it's a right of passage. Recreating our memories through the eyes of our children. My DS will be 14 and DD will be 11 and I know our 'family vacations' will be coming to an end what seems to be to soon for me, but I believe that I've instilled the importance of spending that time enjoying life.....together. I feel comfortable saying that my kids will take their kids to WDW and repeat the joys we share......although probably at a MUCH heftier price tag. Now that I've babled too long........ 3 cheers to having a great family, and friends and being able to enjoy the fruits of one man's dream. Have fun everyone.....we're only here once. Don't get cheated!

Lots of pixie dust to all,

Andy

We rented last year and stayed at the BCV cheaper than we could have stayed at the Pop. It was a wonderful experience and we will definitely do it again. In fact, we were going to rent from the same DVC member this year, but with the b4g3 deal we couldn't pass up the Poly and we wanted the option to cancel because I am trying to get preggers again and didn't want to be 7 months pregnant at Disney, but that hasn't happened :headache:, so Poly here we come!!:lovestruc

Most definitely check out Disney's prices especially if they have a special deal going on (like 4/3 deal) or you have a AAA discount. If you go directly through Disney, you get daily full cleaning. And if that is important to you, the small difference in cash may make it worthwhile. Sometimes, the deal Disney is offering may be better than renting a reservation from a DVC member. You just have to price it all out.

But, remember, once you make that reservation through a member, consider it a done deal. Kind of like Priceline. No going back and cancelling or changing it.

If you can find a good member to rent from, someone you trust, someone you feel comfortable with, there shouldn't be any problem at all.

As a DVC member and an active member of the DVC board - I'd rent points - from about a dozen people I feel I "know" and trust over on that board. I wouldn't rent from a 'stranger.'

It took two years of posting before I felt comfortable enough with ANYONE over there to send someone I'd 'met' on the internet thousands of dollars.

I am soooo nervous about renting. I "almost" bought in to dvc last week. BUt with so much going on it just was not a good time.

Can anyone post or PM me a list of reliable DVC renter's? Is it allowed? Dont wanna go against rules. But I could really use some help . The thought of getting cheated and losing everything is scary!

I really need a 2 bedroom and they are pricey. Especially when I can stay offsite for 200 in a 6 bedroom beautiful home. But I really want to to be the Disney experience 24/7 . I would love to be onsite this year!

I have and I'd do it again!:thumbsup2

like others have said, if you have a reliable trustworthy renter it can be great.

I wouldn't rent pts. and I'm a DVC member.

There have been lots of good stories but there have been a few bad stories. Multiple people paying for 1 unit for the same dates and no real reservation for any of them, a scam artist posing as a DVC member, people paying and the owner not making the reservation, etc. You have ZERO control over the reservation. There is no way that I could do it unless I knew the pts. owner personally.

If I were you, I'd rent through Disney. If you have to wait for a discounted rate, do it, or join AAA-it's about $70 and gives you excellent discounts.

If you are a DVC Member another option is to rent the points and have the owner deposit them into your account and make your own ressies...of course they will be 7 month points for reservations
