Would You Rent DVC Points?

I'd like a kitchen next time we visit and figure it's either FWcabin or villa. Would you book through Disney or rent DVC points?

Thanks for your input!

I'd like to rent points eventually, since we're still undecided about buying DVC and would like to experience it before making a final decision. There are pros and cons to both. Renting through Disney gets you standard housekeeping; renting points gets you the more limited service given to DVC members. Renting points is much cheaper; booking a villa through Disney is very expensive.

One big differnce is that there are going be more restrictions and less control over your reservation with a point rental. The member you rent from will have full control of your reservation at all times and you would have to go thru them for any changes or additions. Also, there will be a much stricter cancel policy as the member will have restrictions on on what could be done with the points if date changes have to be made or a cancellation has to be made.

I suggest you go over to the DVC rental board and read all the FAQ to understand them.

When you are sure of a date and place, it can be a great way to save money, just less flexible than a reservation thru CRO.

I would rent points.

I'm a DVC member & have rented a 2 bedrooom villa before when we were out of our own points.

Our renter was very accommodating when we had to cancel our trip last Thanksgiving week. Six days before our scheduled check in for a 7 night stay at SSR, DD14 ended up in the hospital for a 17 night stay.:headache:

We called him from the hospital & said there was no way we would be able to make the trip.

He worked with us & helped us find another time that we could go. We had to take the trip before March 1st due to some point restrictions. We ended up going in late January & had a wonderful time!

We did and it soldified our decision to buy DVC for ourselves. The accomodations, in my opinion, are better than anything else offered in WDW.

If you can find a good member to rent from, someone you trust, someone you feel comfortable with, there shouldn't be any problem at all.

Since we can't afford to buy one yet, we are thinking of renting points for our trip in Oct/Nov. I would like to try out BWV!

I would love to rent points and try out a DVC villa with a washer/dryer in it. But you can't cancel your trip like you can if you book through Disney, and this is what has kept us from every trying this.

Thank-you everyone for your input! We're considering the new Bay Lake Tower. It looks fabulous! Will let you know what we decide (although we wont be going until Feb next yr!)

I would definitely rent points. A regular over on the Photo Board and I were talking one day and found out she is a DVCer with her home at BWV. We have ALWAYS wanted to try BWV but were a little hesitant to rent points. Luckily, we decided to go ahead with it and she was actually kind enough to let us pay 1/2 at booking and 1/2 six months out from our trip. They are also more than willing to work with us if for some reason we need to cancel and have offered up making our dining reservations, if necessary, etc.

If it weren't for renting points, we would have been staying at a value this December rather than a Deluxe. For us to rent points, it ended up being $95 per night for a standard view studio compared to $350 it would cost to book the same room through Disney. :scared1: Insane.

We are so excited to go and can't wait to experience the convenience of staying in an Epcot area resort. :cool1:

I think that renting points is a great thing, as long as you are smart about it, willing to trust another Disney fanatic and do all of your research.

Good luck!! :goodvibes

We are previous renters from a DVC member and don't regret it one bit. Had it not been for the points, we would have never been able to stay five nights at SSR for about $130 a night. :wizard::wizard: We were fortunate to find someone that was WONDERFUL !! I spent many hours on the RENT/BUY DVC boards before I found our "WONDERFUL FRIEND" but at the same time it disgusted me when I read that some didn't have the same luck and was taken for a scam. Just be careful !!! because it can be possible.

We were introduced to renting points just by sheer accident in 2005. I ended up booking a 2 BR at OKW. It was the single best trip I think we've ever taken. Like one of the previous posters said, If you find a good reputable DVC member to rent from, the experience AND THE SAVINGS is well worth it. I've lost the info to my DVC contact or I'd still be doing that until I can afford to buy in :lovestruc

I tried renting, but the date I was looking for was not available. We don't plan far enough in advance for vacations. Tells me DVC is not for me.

I rented from a member here on the DIS a few years ago. I got a BWV studio with a wonderful view of the boat docks and space ship earth facing the courtyard there for about $125.00 a night. It was wonderful and I'd do it again in a minute (if she was still renting points:rotfl:). I was a nervous wreck until I checked in though, because I knew she controlled the ressie and could cancel if she wanted to. As a previous poster said, just be comfortable with the person you are renting from.

We have always rented through Disney for our BWV (2 bedroom). Guess I like to have controll over my reservations plus I like daily housekeeping. We are AAA members and usually have them book our trip through Disney and since Aug. is considered value season when we go we have always gotten a good discount on our package (villa, tickets, meal plan).

I would absolutely rent points. We rented last year and stayed in a 2 bedroom at BWV for right around $2000 (would have been almost $5000 through disney). This year, we had book the 4/3 deal for AKL (standard view), but then cancelled that to rent points for a savannah view studio. It was actually a little cheaper to rent the points and buy tickets separately than to use the 4/3 deal.

We've rented points before and loved it. Would do it again in a heartbeat. The only reason we are not renting this time is that the units we want are not available. We booked a last minute trip and are staying at a value. A regular room is such a letdown when you are used to DVC. I am the first to admit that dh and I are DVC snobs.

The last two trips my DW and I have taken involved renting points. We were still able to have control over the trip (even if there was limited control over the reservation. In renting points each time we have made a $3000-5000 trip cost about $2000 or less. If this means visiting Disney every 1 1/2 to 2 years instead of every 5, I am all for it.

YES!! Rent points. We have done it about 4 times now and I will never go back to regular rooms. It is soooo worth it. Just make sure you get a contract with the person renting you the points. Just jump in and do it. You will not regret it.

We booked a 2 bedroom at OKW last December through Disney as a package like you would book any hotel room onsite. We even got the 40% off rate! It was a great choice and the full kitchen was a dream with two small kids! We loved it and would book a DVC resort through Disney again In heartbeat!
