Would you rather live by WDW or DL?

I just moved to Florida about seven months ago. We chose Florida over California and Hawaii and it was an easy decision.

I have been to both Orlando and L.A. many times. WDW is better than DL (my opinion) and I HATE the L.A. lifestyle, traffic problems, and crowds of it all. Just a concrete jungle for miles and miles. The beaches are better in Florida and so are the theme parks (not just Disney). Miami is 3.5 hours away if I want the Hollywood-East feel. Also, moving from Washington State to Florida, both have NO income tax (and Florida has a lower sales tax) so that was a bonus too with me owning my own business. California taxes and cost of living is a nightmare.

I agree, the weather in California is better in general, but the other things trump the weather for us.

So far we LOVE IT HERE!

I'd chose to live near WDW! :) I'm an east coast girl at heart and love going to Florida.

Right now, I live about 45 mins from Aulani. The COL here is astronomical and I do not enjoy paying $4.25 for a gallon of gas. It's definitely pretty here and we get a lot of "Oh, but you live in Hawaii" comments but it's not all it's cracked up to be. Good for a vacation, but not to live. ;)

We will be moving to NC in the fall though! :thumbsup2

I practically grew up at DL but I still would say WDW. I have a bro who still likes DL better. I think with more rides and so spread out it helps the lines. If DL could get that third park stock holders were promised before Eisner left (Iger decided to fix DCA first) DL would be more competitive. One thing you might not notice is how far you have to walk at WDW. Once I went to DL and WDW in about a week of each other and I realized how much bigger they are in terms of walking just The Magic Kingdom I would say is 3 times the size it is nice to be able to maneuver away from crazy stroller people but it wears you out faster and I do hate all the time going between parks which would give a 3 park DL an advantage. Also I think Epcot is my fav at WDW though I prefer DL to it so if we had a west cot that would help make DL the better one.

We talk about making this exact move all the time Ethan! Glad to hear that your family is enjoying your new location in the Sunshine State!

OP - As much as I love SoCali (it really is a beautiful place with so much to do), we could never afford the COL and every time we visit, I can't wait to come home. Not true when we go to Central FL! We talk about moving to the SouthEast all the time!

I couldn't believe it when I saw this thread because our family is having the same debate! I've lived here in Arizona my whole life, and my DH has been here for about 15 years so we are both ready for a change. We're both very familiar with California, but the cost of living is scary for us also we'd like to know what it's like to live on the east coast since we've been everywhere on the west coast.

Our needs are warm weather no cold or snow because I'm a desert dweller and can't handle the cold. Heat doesn't bother me much since I'm used to 115 degree summers although it is a dry heat. I love the weather in California it's so much nicer than here, but Florida humidity kind of worries me since i'm not used to it. First we need to sell our house before we can move so it may be a while for us.

By the way, here is the thread I started about a year ago when we decided to move to Florida: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3117984

Might be some good info in there if you really are thinking about moving to Florida at all.

Ethan that thread was so informative thanks for posting it. We're looking for an area like you've described living in and also have concerns about the schools for our DD9. It would be so nice to live that close to WDW. We also love cruising so that's a bonus too.

You could not pay me enough to live in California with the politics and taxes and political correctness baloney that goes on there. Give me Florida any day!

Live near Disneyland:
With 25 million of my closest friends; jam packed 8 lane interstates running through almost every yard; California taxes coming out the wazoo; Nancy Pelosi.

I'll one up you: Rick Scott. Enough said.

Anyways, as someone who has lived in Florida (Palm Beach County) for 17 years, I will say that there are certainly aspects I like and dislike. First and foremost, you need a car and you'll find yourself spending more money on gasoline than you would in most other areas. If you want to get to the mall, the beach (unless you can afford the $1 mill+ oceanfront condos), work, school, etc..., you need a car and you'll be using it a lot. Similar to WDW, there are not a lot of walkways, but I can only wish Florida could get a public transit system similar to WDW's but the ones we have are lackluster at best and are mostly dependent on busses. The few train systems we have (Tri-Rail down here and soon-to-open SunRail in Orlando) are not very reliable and what do you do once you've arrived at your destination? With the dearth of walkways and other forms of transit, you need a car to get around making the trains useless. In fact, I've never ridden Amtrak in Florida for the same reason. If you are a person who does not like to drive, Florida is not the place for you. Of course, my area of Florida is also not the most umm... "cultured" as you won't find many museums or shows (that aren't incredibly loud concerts), so if you want the New York-ish vibe you might be able to find a bit (and I mean a tiny bit) in Miami, and let's not get started about the schools.

Of course, Florida is a beautiful state and there are some incredible advantages. First and foremost, we are 2 to 2.5 hours away from WDW via car meaning we can still frequently enjoy WDW (w/ FL Resident discounts) while also getting to experience the hotels and "Disney bubble" just like out-of-staters do. In fact, often, we just park our car at the hotel and use Disney Transport the entire time to further immerse ourselves. I think it's fair to say that the majority of people in our area have been to Disney and you will frequently see those "WDW AP" car magnets on people's cars.

Beyond Disney, there are financial benefits to living in Florida as others have mentioned, there are the beaches and weather (you will get used to the heat though it may seem impossible at first) is great, and you'll find a real "boat/aquatic culture" if you choose to live near the shore. It seems that there are more people here than anywhere else that just spend their weekends fishing or diving. I'd argue it's much easier to live in Florida than most other places in the world. It's slower, warmer, and more relaxed. There's also a weird sense of community for such a large area: it's not uncommon to see the local news anchors at the movie theaters or bump into friends at random places. You just don't have that in other places

Quickly in regard to hurricanes, though infrequent, they do happen. The last major one was 2005 and that was part of a string of three or four that hit back to back in 2004/05. I remember having a fair amount of warning and damage wasn't too nasty. My tip for those would be evacuate. Even if they're saying it's going to be Cat. 1, go. It can be very scary. Having ridden out a Cat 1., I can attest to the fear one feels, so evacuate. For us, one way we turned the negative into a positive was going to the DoubleTree Naples with our neighbors (good friends of ours) and turned it into a reunion-type trip with friends. It was a lot of fun and we remember it fondly. I'd take hurricanes over blizzards, earthquakes, or heaven forbid twisters any day.

Overall, Florida's not for everybody. If you want a New York-type experience with active nightlife, shows, art, culture, awesome schools, and effective and highly utilized mass transit, Florida's not for you. If you're okay with driving and heat and the occasional severe thunderstorm, you'll get a slower, relaxed lifestyle (great place for kids growing up by the way) with more outdoor activity, a communal feel, closeness to Disney, beaches, and other attractions. The food is pretty good and fresh too.

We moved from Washington state to Florida about 11 months ago and we love it too. Taxes were a big consideration for us as well and having lived in a state with no income taxes, it was nice that we didn't have to start paying them and filing an extra annual return. We love it here too and are amazed how much friendlier the people are here.

We settled on Viera which is on the east coast in Brevard county. The schools here are wonderful and really are a contrast to what we thought were good schools in Washington.

WDW I love the weather and the beaches and the parks are so much better. You could not pay me to live by DL the traffic, the people are awful.
I am hoping to move to Florida.

California hands down. Lived in coastal Orange County for years and it's a great place to live. Weather much better too.

Would you rather live by WDW or Disneyland? I think about this a bunch because we (family) have a chance to relocate in a year and have considered both areas based on warm weather, things to do, etc.

If you had to pick, would you prefer Florida and the World or California and the Land?

I'm a southern girl, so I would definitely go with FL and WDW. I love the heat.

Also, the thought of earthquakes shakes me more than hurricanes. At least with hurricanes we have enough warnings to go inland - not so with earthquakes! (Would not be the deciding factor though - I have too many other reasons).

Also, went to Disneyland many years ago and the traffic around Los Angeles 'then' was worse than around Orlando 'now'.

Florida ;) Not only for WDW but the list I could make that would take over the thread lol Many reasons have been mentioned by pp. I got close for 6 yrs I lived in Gulf Shores, Al making the drive to Fl for most everything from shopping to entertainment ;) Maybe someday I'll make it a lil further for alot longer!

I'm 90 miles from Disneyland now and the only direction I'd move is closer to it. I enjoy visiting WDW, but I like how Disneyland is run and hate how WDW is run. Also, I'm a California native and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

There's no way I could handle the humidity of Florida. Just...ick. Nope. Not gonna happen. With that said, I went to college in SoCal and it was pretty icky. There is a lot of traffic, a lot of smog, and it just isn't my cup of tea. Currently, we like about 6 hours from the Land, and it works for us. DH would love to retire in Anaheim to work in the park, but I'm just not feeling it. Maybe another area of southern CA, but the LA region gives me hives.

As a side note, I found it interesting to see how many people are scared of earthquakes. They really don't happen very often, and most of them aren't even particularly noticeable. I guess if you are not used to them, the fact that there isn't any warning can make them quite scary. But, they last less than a minute and rarely cause damage outside of, say, a broken picture frame or two. So, if that is holding you back from CA, I would certainly reconsider.

Tornadoes? Now those scare the bejeebus out of me.
