this is driving me nuts also! I have a friend that will not travel at ALL because of her cat!!! Her husband can take care of the cat, but she rather give up a trip to Italy and Disney just to stay home! She keeps saying after the cat passes!
I had 2 hyma's I traveled just fine!!

Everyone gets to decide how to include their animals into theri lives. When we rescued our kitties from the barn I never thought that I would disrupt my life at all for them, they were cats. That was 18 years ago. I only have my Sassy now and she is an old girl who would never adjust to a kennel. There is no way I would leave her if I had no one I could trust to at least be in my home several hours a day. She is more than jusy a pet, she is our family too.

We have been putting of having our floors refinished, I am not locking her up for three days while the sanders go through the house.

My cats are rising 7 and 8, Lucy is rising 14 this year. My mother looks after them when I am on holiday, she is unwell and is unable to look after them so no holiday for me this year (though if she is better I am going to have 2 weeks in disney with the platinum dining plan next year)

I can't even stand the thought of putting my dog in a kennel when he's healthy, let alone if he were ill or not feeling well. He's not just a dog, he's part of our family.

I adore my pets and treasure them as wonderful additions to our family but I value the human relatives more. The only way I'd skip a major family event for a pet is if it were truly the pet's last days.

We put our dog in a kennel for the first time this December when we went to Disney. We left the cats at home while my mom stopped in each day to feed them and play with them. I stressed about it and missed them terribly but I wouldn't trade that Disney experience with my kids for ANYTHING. They took great care of my big boy at the kennel and he is just as happy and lovable as ever. No trauma, no side effects. The earth kept spinning and the animals survived.

When we went away, I boarded my diabetic cat at the vet's. I didn't want the people who were coming in to feed my other cats to have to worry about inslulin shots for this cat. And then I didn't have to worry about the cat, because I knew he was in great hands. Is boarding the dog at the vet's an option?

This is what I would do. Our vet also boards animals and I think they would get the attention they need that way and the medication they need, when they need it. Then the vet can call you if something has changed and get approval to change medication.

That's the only solution I can find that would be suitable.

My SIL is driving my brother crazy. She has an older dog that she will not leave at the kennel since he is on meds. She will not be coming to our family reunion because it would require an overnight stay. I love my pets but I am not sure I would sacrifice so much for them. She made my brother cancel a cruise due to the condition of the dog. I guess I feel that humans are more important than animals.

I have and will continue to sacrifice for my boys. I get sitters to stay with them when we go on vacation without them.

This is the responsibility of having 4 legged family. And while I agree Humans are indeed more important then animal family, the cruise isnt human.

I have a cat and will be adopting 2 more soon.

I don't mind sending them to a Kennel, even if they were on meds I would be ok with it. My kennel is at my vets, so if I trust these people to prescribe the meds I'm fairly certain they can give them to my pet just as well as I can.

They are very careful not to take contagious pets though. My cat has had this issue since he was a kitten where he gets a runny nose sometimes, but nothing is wrong with him. It has gotten alot better as he got bigger but if he has it when he goes in they always have a vet check just to make sure they don't think its a problem before they take him.

i left them with sitters once, my landlords. Never again for anyone I don't REALLY trust. This is how I lost my older cat.

To each their own. I really think what others feel and/or make allowances for regarding their pets - so long as it doesn't affect you - is none of your business.

I learned long ago that my priorities are not other's priorities. I'll spend money on travel and live with a ratty sofa and the person next to me would rather have new furniture and stay home.

I don't mean to be rude, but, obviously their well-loved pet takes priority for them.

To some of us our pets are family and I agree that decision should be respected.

I agree. The poster who started this two year old thread back up did so as their first post. That seems a little odd.

Only my Pet Rock. Its a special needs rock that needs a lot of polishing. I have to leave special instructions for its care, it is very sensitive to temperature.

I know this is an old thread, but since I didn't comment back then, I'll comment now.

Go easy on people who won't leave their pets. As hard as it is for some people to understand, I wouldn't leave my dog in a kennel, either. If I can't have a dogsitter stay with him in our home, I won't go My peace of mind from worrying about my dog in a kennel is more important than going to a family reunion and worrying about him the whole time. Neurotic, maybe, but tell it to my heart.

There was a time when I would have said, No, I wouldn't rearrange my life for a pet. But now that Minky is older I feel differently. Minky is a large Standard Poodle and their life span is about 10-12 years, I think. Over the last 2-3 years he has developed some issues, like arthritis and anxiety. He has gotten hurt 5 times since last summer, due to arthritis. He has liver disease and at 11yo he's pretty creaky. Definitely an elderly gentleman. I have not had to cancel a vacation yet, but I can see that day might come.

I would put my life on hold for my pets. I did recently. My boy has since passed and I miss him terribly.
