Would you pay $100 for a bottle of wine?

For a special occasion with special people I would. I've been wanting to try ice wine which seems to be in that price range.
Tell me about Ruth's Chris. I want to go to Philly and try it this summer. Our favorite place is called the Library and when we go all out there we probably can drop $75. for 2.

Ruth's Chris is along the lines of a Morton's or a Shula's at the Dolphin (or the one in Miami Beach). Dinner for two, with wine, appetizers, salads, entree and dessert with coffee/tea will run you around $120-$150 w/tip, depending on what you order and how much you drink. :)

Sure I would!
Then I would sell it to some bonehead on Ebay for $101!

::yes:: ::yes:: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

I've never been to Morton's. Hard to believe since I lived in Chicago for 2 years. And dh and I love a good steak house. We could spend $150. at the Library but if we order steak and appys we have little room for dessert and much to drink. Sometimes we split a larger steak and add a bunch of extras to it.

I have and I absolutely would - especially for special occasions and/or for a special gift to a fellow wine lover (like my DH) on milestone birthdays and anniversaries. It makes the event that much more special.

I also keep track of what DH & I ate during a truly spectacular meals plus the wines we drank with them. It helps bring those memories right back.

I don't object to an expensive dinner, but we're just not wine drinkers. We would choose a cocktail, water, beer, or something else. Nope, no wine for us at any price:D

For myself? No, I don't drink.

For someone else, say, as a gift? Sure.

I probably wouldn't but DH certainly would. In 1997 he bought 2 bottles of Far Niente Dolce for $55 each. I thought he was crazy. On our wedding day Jan 1, 2000 we opened the first bottle and it was worth approx. $150 when we did so. It was very, very good. When we opened the second bottle after I took the BAR it was worth $200. He has paid upwards of $85 for a good Cabernet. Luckily we live about 45 minutes from the Napa Valley and have lots of good wine to choose from.

Sure its gone in a flash - but isn't a WDW vacation gone almost as quickly for 10 times that amount??;)

Pay $100 dollars for a bottle of wine? (What's that in GBP? £54?) No: I'd rather have ten bottles at $10 each! (Not all at once, you understand!)

Oh yes, I totally agree with that one...I couldn't tell the difference between a $10 vs. $100. I have a friend who bought a case of some kind of fruity dessert wine at about $100/per. I think that is insane. There are some very good wines out there for $10-$15/bottle, why spend all of that money???

I had a sip of Dom Perignon once, I didn't like it...What a waste of money..

Not often - but we have done ity. Actually my favorite is about $40-$75 in most restaurants. Cake Bread!

For a special occasion, yes. We enjoyed a bottle of Opus One (rated either 99 or 100 out of 100) that was easily worth $250 at the head table of our wedding. It was a bottle that DH had before he knew me and he was saving it for something special. It was even more special that we shared it with our wedding party too.

Our best man gave us another bottle at Christmas time, so we'll be saving that for either the 5th or 10th anniversary. :)

The wine we drink normally is $10-15/bottle. Sometimes we'll have one that gets in the $20-25 range.

KrnB, Opus One! Yes. I'll definitely pay over $200 for a bottle of Opus if I can afford one. I had only spend $30 for 1 tasting in the vineyard (1/3 of a glass), and it blows my mind out. We did buy the cheaper 'blend' from Opus. But I still don't have a good enough celebration to open them. :)

My 'normal' wines are $10-$15 range. I don't believe that expensive wine are better than cheap ones. (Gallo Cab is by far one of the best wine I've tasted, even at blind tasting). I'll definitely pay $100 for something special. I haven't done it yet, but I sure appreciate wine a lot more than SUV. I just don't understand how someone can dish out $60K for a car.

Guess everything is relative. :p

Never unless I was trying to impress someone (and that's Sooo not me) so never!

$12.00 tops....... I like my Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir

I really love wine. I've been drinking white for years and just now am learning about (and enjoying) reds. I've developed a taste for the better wines and will wrinkle my nose like the biggest of the wine snobs at bad wine.

Having said that, I would never drop that much on a bottle of wine. Why? Because I've found many really great wines in the $10 - $15 range. I've had some that were more expensive (mostly when friends want to celebrate something special) but I'm just as happy with what I've found for under $20.

Thanks for your replies, it is interesting to read them.

DH is a wine lover, as are a few of his friends. One of the friends contacted me in regards to picking up a bottle of wine for him to give my DH as a retirement gift, it is an Italian wine from the year (1985) that DH entered the service. When I found out it was $100 I told him he was crazy, but he is adamant on getting it, and I know my DH would really enjoy it, but I would never spend $100!

Thanks again!
