Would you love a big and long water slide at Castaway Cay?

I doubt there would be a tram on a deserted island.....

There also wouldn't be a big pier and large seated dining area; you have to make some basic accomodations to support the logistics of bringing in a massive vessel and discharging/supporting it's passengers.

The subject being discussed here has to do with going way beyond that, taking the focus of activity from natural attractions (sea and sand) and turning it towards artificial replacements (pools and water slides)! ;)

Someone who has a better understanding than I do, please speak up. But I understand that Disney could only develop so much of the island and has to leave the biggest part of it in it's natural appearance. So a pool or waterslide would kind of be outside of that natural appearance agreement.

Thankyou Beachblanket ...I thought it was something to do with the Teletubbies (a British TV programme if you have heard of them)

Here are some shots of the so-called "expertly hidden" slides at various WDW resorts and parks:

"they want to pave paradise...
...and put up a parking lot..."

Those three slides are all perfectly themed for their locations. Boardwalk is supposed to look like a seaside amusement park and Blizard Beach is supposed to have a melting ski resort look.

Why don't you pick the slides that would actually be a halfway decent fit for CC, like the Polynesian, Coranado Springs or even the sandcastle slide at OKW or the Shipwreck slide from the Yacht/Beach club. You can find pics of most of them here:

http://hotels.about.com/od/disneyworld/ss/wdw_waterslides.htm

I'm sure they could come up with something totally unique which would fit the theme of Castaway Cay and which wouldn't effect the theme or atmosphere of the island at all.

You are intentionally picking resort slides which have themes that have nothing to do with an island. Perhaps you need to look for your inspiration from a source other than quotes from someone known for their use of psychedelic drugs. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

This is where we really disagree. Yes, Disney could try (if -- as one other poster has pointed out -- Bahamas codes allow it) to design theme park/resorty type attractions (a.k.a. "water slides" or "big themed pools") to "fit" the supposed small, deserted tropical island theming of CC.

But that's not the real issue. Rather, it's a debate between those of us who feel the whole point of CC is to engage you in an undeveloped natural atmosphere, vs. those who want that to include artificial theme-parky/resorty elements. Which in turn is a difference of opinion based upon different core values about what this sort of cruise vacation should and shouldn't be.

Which is an "argument" that's never going to be resolved here! popcorn::

I think some of you guys are missing the point of this thread ....the OP was only asking for peoples' opinions..... its not a 'right' or 'wrong' session :guilty:

Everyone is entitled to express their own thoughts and ideas .......without others responding with (in their opinion) why they are not correct.

This is a friendly board :lovestruc

Chill out :dance3:

The OP chiming in here. Thanks for bringing home the point of my question. But I've been on this great board long enough to develop a thicker skin. I welcome both "sides" to this debate, I really do.

I still would love a great slide on CC. I feel like a little kid on them. I also love CC as is. Disney knows how to do great things, without ruining the beautiful scenery that is CC. So who knows, I wish they were reading this thread though, and perhaps think about it.

Ok, I sort of agree, but what if they did build a resort size slide and pool and set it back from the beach in such a way that it was not visible whatsoever unless you walked 100 yards down a path. The only indication it existing might be a themed little sign with an arrow saying "Castaway Falls Lagoon this way!". If you didn't know it was there unless you went down that path, how could it possibly effect your enjoyment of the island? CC already has very visible facilities which would never exist in a natural environment, so I really don't see how something that wasn't visible could possibly make a difference.

We cruised NCL in 1983 right after they opened up their private island, Great Stirrup Cay. Just a beach, food, beverage and music on the island.
Two years later, we cruised again on NCL, but now they allowed people from nearby islands to come in on their own boats and set up a huge "straw market", ruined the whole experience. Turned an isolated tropical island into a shopping mall.
I guess they could do it at Castaway Cay, IF they keep it out of sight of paradise. However, I wonder if it would be practical. Not sure the island water system is up to producing that much freshwater, whether the power plant could handle the filters and pumps it would require. And then there are the bugs that come out at night on the island. It sure would be work every morning to scoop all those dead creatures out of a fresh water pool.

I'm already on the record as opposing the idea but I think tvguy makes some valid points. Logistically it's a very impractical venture.
What would Disneys incentive be to do this? None, that I can think of. Castaway Cay is already everyone's favorite port. The ships are essentially sold out. If they were to undertake this a sizable percentage of their customers would be very upset. It would cost an incredible amount of money just to make the island capable of supporting a slide (see tvguys points regarding the needed infrastructure). They would have to substantially increase the live-in staffing to operate and maintain this. Again, as tvguy alludes to, the bugs are a real and serious consideration. What about the water tables on the island? Construction of a pool may well be impossible. If it even was doable, you're looking at TREMENDOUS expenditure for a few hours of use three times per week.

Folks....... it ain't happening.

When I started this thread, my idea was the slide to be in the beach area. No way did I dream of a pool being built on this island. Now that somebody brought up the whole tide issue, it makes sense. It sure would've been fun though.

Now if you wanna continue the pool discussion, go at it. But I'm with the rest of the folks, thats just not Castaway Cay to me. No, no pool. Nice debate though...carry on. :)

Nope.

Too many people on the cruise ship for a "small waterpark" - they'd need one about a quarter of the size of Blizzard Beach - or twice the size of SAB. 2000 people all wanting to use one waterslide doesn't sound like a pleasant way to spend a day to me.

I'm not a big beach fan - kids don't like saltwater, none of us like that much sunshine. But Castaway Cay is what it is - and I think this is a case where you need to be careful what you ask for.

Have you seen how small and flat CC is? It would be impossible to put it anywhere and not have it visible.
