Would you lie for $200?

I suspect that most people would lie in this case if the money was good enough.

Yes he has money but the longer he is out of work the harder it will be to gain employment, so the need for a job is long term.

If the $$ amount was $1000 would you reconsider?

No way I would do it! Sounds like he got himself into this mess but wants you to take such a risk to get him out of it. Oh, I am also a BAD liar with a guilty conscious. LOL

How many more times would you have to lie for him? Sorry, not worth it. I'd rather hire someone more honest that he appears to be. Maybe that's why he's having problems getting hired anywhere, because of a difficulty to tell the truth. Are you sure he will even pay you if he doesn't get the job?

Not worth it.

For that, no.

Now if you wanted me to come running in the house and lie to a bunch of small children that I just saw the Easter Bunny hopping down the street and if they get to the window quick they might catch a glimpse of his tail, I'd do it for $200 in a heartbeat. Much better pay than the $0 I got for really doing it. :teeth:

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but I could have SWORN something like this was asked a while back. :confused3

My answer would be the same, regardless...NO, I would not lie for a fee in a situation like this. Actually, I wouldn't lie at ALL in a situation like this. Bad karma for the lying applicant. It DOES come around.

This sounds like one of those questions from the 'What If' books. Those books are so fun, and they really make you think. Such as the OP now stating, 'would you do it for $1000?' Did it make anyone change their mind? Is this really a fake scenario from one of those books, or do you really have a friend who asked you to do this????

Humm I don't know that I would say no that quickly.

1. You said he needs a job badly. Is he dependable. You mentioned bad fits and termination. Why was he terminated? Was it his fault?

2. How well do you know him. Again the same question would he be dependable.

I would help a friend get a job if they needed one badly to support their family, HOWEVER the person would have to be dependable. NO way I'm helping a dead beat get a job, but if this is a good person who is going to keep the job for a long time and is a good worker I would consider it.
This is exactly what I was thinking. If a stranger on the street asked me, no way. But a friend in need, if they are a decent person and I knew them and knew they honestly needed the help...I'd really have to give it consideration but I think I 'd help. Why doesn't he just list you as his supervisor that way you don't lie about who you are, just your relationship with him. Honestly, my DH had a horrible run in with a man he worked for, dishonest dealings and treating his customers horribly as well as his employees. When DH told him to take a flying leap and quit, he needed a reference. His ex wife agreed to be his "supervisor" and he got the job he has now and has flourished. BTW, she needed child support so it was in her best interest to help him get a new job so he could pay her. It all worked out. Probably not anyone's proudest moment but it was necessary in his case. You never know.

Yep, sure does sound like another test question. If that's the case I just wish that the OP would state it like that. Maybe I'd even answer some of his questions if I didn't feel I was being played with.

Oh, I think it's happened a time or two. ;)

Since you don't live in MD anymore don't you think you need to find new hunks for your signature? :teeth:

Darn, I didn't realize it earlier, but I answered on of his questions seriously this evening. I'm clearly slipping! :rotfl:

$200 or $1000....crud. Anybody who knows me, knows that I am one thrifty chick. I love a good bargain and I believe in a free lunch...just ask me about my timeshare experiences. And usually I try to stay away from posts that ask "moral" type questions, but --- and yes, there is a but --- I'm a hiring manager and while references are important, I've never hired someone solely on their references. If your friend is truly qualified, then let him get the job on merit, not a lie. If he was hired and it was ever found out, it would be a big loss of confidence. If your buddy has truly gotten a bad rap, then why doesn't he just submit a resume and add personal references? Folks who can give positive and truthful feedback.

Also, what if you were the hiring manager and someone pulled this over on you? Would you truly want someone capable of hiring someone to lie for him to work for you? Would you be able to trust that employee?

Ginny
ps -- the Easter Bunny thing...yeah, I do that in a minute....tooth fairy too.
