Seriously though, what is wrong with people? Why would any parent allow this? I remember being very young and watching an episode of Rescue 911 and a kid got stuck in an escalator. The strings on his hooded sweatshirt cut off his airway. That life lessons has stuck with me.

Never! When I was a preteen and going to get off the escalator (I was not fooling around but using the escalator as it as intended) my sneaker got caught in it. Luckily, when I would go to either put on or take off my shoes, I never untied them so my sneakers were at the point that there was some give in them. When my shoe caught I was pulled back a bit and then my foot came right out of the shoe. The department store I was in had to shut down the escalator in order to get my shoe out and it was in ribbons. Ever since then I am wary of escalators and take great care when I ride one. Now that I have a daughter I am even more diligent in making sure we both get through the short ride safely.

Um, no. it's not safe.
I also don't let them run with scissors, play on the highway, eat/sniff glue, put bison babies in the SUV, or stick forks in electrical sockets for the same reason.

One of my earliest memories is being on an escalator with my mom. My two older sisters were behind us. Mom was holding my hand and she turned around to yell at my sisters for fooling around. I sat down and my dress got caught in the side of the step. Mom picked me up and ripped my dress to free me.

I worked in a retail store with an elevator and it amazed me when parents allowed their children to try to run up the down escalator. Not a toy, people!

It's amazing that businesses actually need to post signs to warn people about things that should be common sense. I took my 17-year old to the pediatrician yesterday. We noticed a sign over the exam table that spelled out in big letters: Please do not leave babies or small children unattended on the examination table." Does that really need to be said? I'm sure kids have fallen off the table before because the parent wasn't paying attention. So the office posted the sign to avoid lawsuits. It should be a no-brainer not to allow your kids to stand or play on an escalator. People are too concerned about making their kids unhappy so they let them run wild.

I used to work in a casino and one day I noticed a special needs adult riding the escalator up and down. Sometimes he would be sitting on the steps, or standing facing backwards and one time laying down. I called security to notify them of the incident and to address the safety issue and I was told they couldn't do anything because his mother was a big player and just left him to "entertain" himself in this dangerous manner. A few minutes later, the GM saw what was happening and he finally got security to take care of the situation.

My mother got a pair of underwear stuck in an escalator one time and they had to push the emergency button to stop the escalator. After that we were never allowed to take the escalator, so no my kids would never be allowed to do that.

I grew up hearing horror stories about stupid people and escalators. My dad repaired them and elevators! I'm surprised I can still use one today!!! I don't put my feet anywhere near the edges, or the top of the step...nowhere near anything that actually moves!!!
I've seen parents allow their very young kids to ride by themselves. I've seen parents take strollers on them. I've seen people allow their kids to take their luggage on. I've seen a woman using her phone, trip, and take out about 10 people in front of her, going down! These are not toys!!!!!

That's why unless it is a very wide escalator, I never stood side by side with a child. They either stand between my feet, or on the step in front with me holding their hands - or shoulders (depending on the size of the kid). People are so worried about the "dismount" that they ignore the real threat the whole time they are riding it.

Plus the emergency stop is not even close to where a parent would need to use it. You are completely relying on someone else to stop it for you - assuming someone happens to be there.
