Would you lend your shoppers card to someone in line?

I live in WI. Some of our grocery stores offer a discount card (where you get cents off or other deals if you have the card) and some don't. I prefer to shop at the ones that don't. However, on the occasions that I do stop at one of the stores that has a card, which I don't have, it never would've occurred to me to ask another customer to use theirs nor does the cashier offer to swipe a generic card. I guess for me, I just figure it's a once-in-awhile stop so I just suck it up and pay full price for the items. It's usually only a small discount, so I never really feel like I'm losing out on enough to just get the card.

And by the same token, I've never noticed customers asking other customers to use their cards in those stores. Not saying it doesn't happen, I just haven't notice.

I do have a card for our Shopko chain - which is like Target and really doesn't offer discounts at time of purchase, but after X number of visits or purchases, you get a dollar amount off you next purchase of over X number of dollars.) And still, I've never encountered anyone asking me to use my card nor have I seen anyone else asking another customer to use theirs. I suppose if I were asked, I'd say yes, but I've truly never seen it around here.

I would probably offer on my own if I saw somebody needed a discount.

However, I would NEVER be so presumptuous to ask a stranger in line to use their card, especially for 50 cents. That just seems really weird.

If somebody asked me to use my card, I would be taken aback, be a bit shocked and befuddled that somebody wanted my card and would probably answer the same as the lady in the OP.

This is how I feel as well.

But what about the RULES??

Now you've gone and done it! (clutching my pearls, spilling my martini and running shrieking from this thread) :teeth:

There really was no reason to spill a perfectly good martini over all of this. That is just wasteful. Although, I would be kind enough to allow you to use my rewards card if you needed one for the repurchase of the wasted alcohol. :)

This thread is all kinds of funny, &, just because it's gone on now for 9 pages, I guess I feel the need to chime in! :rotfl:

2. In fact, I think I've lost my grocery card - it's not in my wallet. However, my grocery store will use your telephone number w/ no problem, so I just give the cashier our telephone number. Actually, it's not even our telephone number any more. We got rid of our landline & only use our cell phones now. But my grocery card is tied to the old landline number.

Have you reported your grocery card missing to the proper authorities????

I would offer my card, yes. I've done it once before and have also given people coupons for their items if I'm not going to use them. I love in WA state.

I hate having to sign up for all of the rewards programs...Fred Meyer, Safeway, etc. Such a pain!

This is pretty common where I live & I'm actually shocked that people think it's such a bad thing. Makes me worry about our society that we lack common courtesy & take offense to helping someone in need over something so benign & simple. :confused3

The op wasn't in need she just wanted to save 50 cents on some candy. If someone asks me for a favor it's my right to refuse without an explanation. I'm betting the shopper just said no and the op got pissy.

I'm here to kill this thread!

Just call me buttah cuz I'm on a roll!

But don't you DARE ask me for my store card to purchase said buttah! :duck:

I'll buy your buttah for you....but only provided you can prove you know how to properly butter a roll according to dis standards... :rolleyes1

As for the topic..yes, I have let others use my card, and will continue to do so, but perhaps I should start asking for ID to make sure they aren't the loyalty card police.

Of course I would lend my card (and have).
Only on the DIS would this be an issue - I cant even imagine what the people who would say no are like.

They're just like you except that they live where this practice is unheard of?:confused3

I would and I have. There is absolutely no reason not to, none at all.

I want to know how it's "presumptuous"? It costs you nothing, it helps someone, it doesn't compromise your personal information. Seriously. I do not get it. I bet most of you who said you wouldn't do it, like to think you're a caring, non-judgmental, generous person, right? Not.

I haven't read through all the pages but years ago when Giant Eagle came out with shopper cards, there was advice given on a news report not to lend your card to someone else if you had checking cashing included on your card.

Am I drunk? I've got to be drunk...this all can't be real...

I wish I was drunk! I just got home from work, give me about 30-ish minutes and I'll be drunk with you!

For moi (individual moi), I've never had anyone ask me to use my store rewards card. If anyone ever did, I would have no issues with it. Karma, people. It's all about the karma! ;)

But just because you have never been asked - you have to say you would deny it?? Why? Seems petty.

No, I'd deny it because I'd assume it's against store policy. If it were a common practice that I'd seen on multiple occasions, I'd feel differently.
