I live in WI. Some of our grocery stores offer a discount card (where you get cents off or other deals if you have the card) and some don't. I prefer to shop at the ones that don't. However, on the occasions that I do stop at one of the stores that has a card, which I don't have, it never would've occurred to me to ask another customer to use theirs nor does the cashier offer to swipe a generic card. I guess for me, I just figure it's a once-in-awhile stop so I just suck it up and pay full price for the items. It's usually only a small discount, so I never really feel like I'm losing out on enough to just get the card.
And by the same token, I've never noticed customers asking other customers to use their cards in those stores. Not saying it doesn't happen, I just haven't notice.
I do have a card for our Shopko chain - which is like Target and really doesn't offer discounts at time of purchase, but after X number of visits or purchases, you get a dollar amount off you next purchase of over X number of dollars.) And still, I've never encountered anyone asking me to use my card nor have I seen anyone else asking another customer to use theirs. I suppose if I were asked, I'd say yes, but I've truly never seen it around here.
