Would you lend your shoppers card to someone in line?

I have never had someone ask to use my card before. It honestly hadn't occurred to me until this thread that someone ever would. :confused3

I suppose I would let someone use it if they asked (and thanks to this thread, I would now not be totally shocked by it). However, I would never ever ask anyone to use theirs. It seems strange and a bit presumptuous to ask it of someone, I guess. It just wouldn't occur to me. And I definitely wouldn't ever ask to save $.50 for some candy!

Who made you in charge of the thread?

It discussing if some one asked to use your store card. Sam's club is a store.

I would have a completely different response for a Sam's, BJ's Costco type place that is a membership card, than a loyalty card to the grocery store or pharmacy.

And even if asked I could decline the person politely, not get huffy.

I can't believe I've read this whole thread...my head is spinning.

What is the big fricking deal??? It's a stupid plastic card that entitles you to a discount on an item. It is not a credit card, it is not attached to your social security number or any type of monetary account, you are not obligated to use it, it does not any personal information on it..... I'm just so confused why anyone would NOT share it!!:confused3

I get 1 gas point for every $10 spent, so if my entire neighborhood wants to use my "loyalty" card to buy their groceries, then have at it! I will get my gas much cheaper and much quicker by sharing it.

I live in a tourist town (Hershey) and am constantly giving my card to people behind or in front of me who are out of towners. Heck, I stand in line and shout out, "who needs my card for your discounts??" One time I made 30 cents a gallon from a lovely family in front of me who were straying at the local campground and were stocking up for the weekend. Woo hoo for me!!

The people who refuse to share their cards are just curmudgeons.

It's pretty tangential, but no, I don't exceed the limits in the express line. I also think that you ought to be moving expeditiously in the express lane - no hunting for credit cards, paying by check or otherwise moving like a snail. It's an express lane, after all.

Yes, one of the grocery stores I used to shop at used your loyalty card as "ID" for check writing. Grocery stores are prime targets for fraud - I'd rather not be involved in that.

That said, I think I've been asked once, and loaned my card to them. I thought it was a really odd request, and probably gave them a look like they were insane. I've never asked, and it wouldn't occur to me to ask at a grocery store I don't frequent - I either ignore the sales that require a card or apply for one.

We could go way off target here, but the slowpokes counting our pennies or writing checks in the "express lane" is a definite pet peeve of mine. Weighed produce used to be another, but that process has gotten better.

Yes, I have shared my Kroger card with the person in front of me in line (more than once). Sometimes at the request of the cashier to save the customer some money.

Yes, I have done this. Most recently when the foreign lady in front of me had over $300 worth of groceries and the cashier asked me she could scan my card to save her some money. Got some nice fuel points from that one.

Absolutely NOT. If you asked and I let you use my card my husband would be FIRED as our card is an associate card. I don't think my husbands 42 years with his company is worth you saving 50 cents instead of you taking the 30 seconds to fill out the info for a card.

You would probably think I was nasty too. You have no idea if she had an associates card or not and had been asked multiple times. It does get old to be asked multiple times.

Yes I am taking this seriously. The OP wanted to know if this was common. I am stating from my experience. She has no idea if she was refused because the person she asked had a card like ours or not. Maybe she did.

I have seen people fired on the spot for allowing others to use their card. And this is with a company that is in all states. The one time I was asked I was in Ohio, the person in front of me saw my card and asked to borrow it. I said absolutely not and left it at that. She was a bit huffy but paid her bill and walked off. After I paid the cashier said to me, "you did the right thing, she is our loss prevention officer and if you had let her use your card you would have been fired."
She asked for opinions and I gave mine. Most people take their livelihood very personal.

I'm confused -- who would be fired? You or your husband?

And even still, there is no reason to get nasty when asked a simple question that people think is innocent. Moreover, most people would think it's to your benefit to use the card as it would earn you points. So it's probably better to realize that people aren't out to get you.

Moreover, People ask employees to do stuff that could hurt their employment all the time, like asking for discounts or free stuff. When I worked in retail, people asked for discounts every single day. We gave no discounts and we would have been fired if we did. All I did was say, "Oh, I'm sorry, we're not allowed to give discounts. Company policy." If they persisted, call a manager. NO need to get nasty and in fact, if we'd told a customer, "Absolutely not!" and gotten huffy, THAT would have gotten us fired. There is no need to get nasty about it. Just say no.

But what about the RULES??

Now you've gone and done it! (clutching my pearls, spilling my martini and running shrieking from this thread) :teeth:

Just a couple of thoughts:
It is interesting to me how varied the reactions are to newcomers/tourists/visitors and offering or allowing the use of a discount card. To me, it's 3 seconds. No big deal at all. And it's kinda neighborly. :goodvibes

It honestly wouldn't occur to me that a newcomer/tourist/visitor might potentially going to screw up my (as an example) great thanksgiving turkey deal.

Interesting thread.
It is very interesting.

Love the way everybody's answers are being picked apart and assumptions are being made. On both sides.

Every store is different, every neighborhood is different.

The Thanksgiving Turkey was just an example, thought of after reading this thread for awhile. And yes, if somebody had the $5.00 turkey in their basket and I know I am going to purchase one that week, I would decline their request to use my card. Why would I pay $30+ for a turkey just to give a stranger my discount? Doesn't make sense. It would be far better for the person to open their own card.

But in reality, in the heat of the moment, that would probably not pop in my head. You can think about it on a message board and come up with all kinds of scenarios. But, I can't really say what my immediate reaction would be if I was asked for the first time ever to use my card.

It would not be in my nature to ask somebody to use their card, so yes, I would be surprised to have somebody ask me. Other people's mileage may vary.

My goodness, all this over a lousy 50 cents on a licorice.

I would have no issues letting someone use my card, but I admit I'd raise an eyebrow someone asked me in order to save 50 frigging cents. Now if it was a whole cart of stuff I would get it, but for someone to ask over such a small amount would surprise me.

Careful with that martini, snappy! :lmao:
Maybe we should raise a glass each time we hear the word curmudgeons today. :rotfl2:

(Excellent word, by the way. Nicely sums it up.)

I'm in! :coffee:

Just a Life Pro Tip, if it's a place that doesn't require a physical card, but allows you to enter a phone number, 9 times out of 10, the local area code + 867-5309 will work! I've tried it in a few different stores and states and it always works!

What if the person did not live near it then it would be pointless for them to sign up for the card

Same answer as before. The store's policy is sign up for the card and you get the discount. If they want to scan a card for said person great. However, it is not my decision to unilaterally make for the store by lending my card. So no. Not lending the card.

This place gets weirder every day.

The question was posed about a shopper's card. Obviously, if your card is an employee discount card and not a shopper's card, this discussion does not apply to you and there is no reason for you to freak out.

And some have said it, and I'm sure most are thinking it. The lipstick comparison is completely asinine.

Or do you mean the topics get weirder everyday? :rotfl:
