Would you lend your shoppers card to someone in line?

Well, considering my Kroger card is registered under Minnie Mouse, I could care less.

Clark Howard, a local consumer advocate, says just give bogus info for those cards. They don't really use it anyway.

Now Jenny is mad that Twizzlers are on her purchase history.

Just a Life Pro Tip, if it's a place that doesn't require a physical card, but allows you to enter a phone number, 9 times out of 10, the local area code + 867-5309 will work! I've tried it in a few different stores and states and it always works!

8 pages and going on this one? :rotfl2:

ETA: Oops, my post makes 9. ;)

Hey! You don't know the reasons why some people are still posting. Maybe they are late risers. Or they finally got a break at work so they are checking on the DIS. Maybe they had to research who the OP was and read her old threads to see if this was some type of pattern. Point is you just DON"T know why, but more importantly, why do you even care?

;)

Are our cards a luxury?:lmao:

Of course, we "entitled" to nothing. ;)

Holy cannoli, Jenny must have ten freezers full of turkeys and holiday hams :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Poor Jenny. I guess that's the price she pays. ;) I'm not judging, but maybe she should be a bit more careful with giving her phone number to any and everyone.:lmao:

Or they had to hack into their stores server and make sure there weren't any rogue Twizzler purchases on their history.

Priorities please!

What is the big fricking deal??? It's a stupid plastic card that entitles you to a discount on an item. It is not a credit card, it is not attached to your social security number or any type of monetary account, you are not obligated to use it, it does not any personal information on it..... I'm just so confused why anyone would NOT share it!!

I guess it is a big deal for some considering some of the responses and considering now someone made a whole new thread about it, but not for me. But to answer your question, my answer lies in your very post. You said it yourself, it's a plastic card that entitles you to a discount. And you got that discount by signing up. That's you, not you plus him, her, him, her, and anyone else you want to swipe the card for. If the store wants to swipe a card or take a phone number for people that don't have one, that is their business. Their store. Their policy. Not my store, not my policy. So nope. Not sharing the card. Again, it's no big deal. I wouldn't be taken aback if anyone asked. I'd just tell them something to the effect of sorry, I can't do that, and leave it there. However, I've never been asked to swipe my card for anyone else nor asked anyone else to swipe their card for me.

Indeed! One can never be too careful. A spotless Kroger's reward card record is something to protect and treasure!! :rotfl::rotfl2:

Wow, permanent record? Jenny must be doing some hard time. Hope someone in the big house didn't make her their "sweetie". :scared:

Finally got a break at work; that's why I'm late replying.

About a year ago the local Shop Rite got really strict about the use of their loyalty cards. No lending to the person ahead of you in line, no keying in your phone number if you forgot yours, etc. I don't know the reason for the change. I suppose they got burned somehow in the past.

In the past I've lent mine to a stranger, and someone scanned theirs for me at a CVS when I forgot mine. But for a 50 cent discount at a store I don't frequent, nah, I wouldn't ask, and would probably decline if someone asked me.

Wow. I haven't had a physical loyalty card in more than 7 years! I always just type my number. The only reason I can imagine them caring is if people were racking up gas discounts as mentioned before.

The grocery store we go to most of the time will swipe the "store card" if you say you don't have one or something. :confused3

Besides, right now we get "gas points" for using our card, so if someone else wants to save some money, I get more points for money off gas. Win-win.

OP here. Fell asleep at page 2, woke up at page 9. I am really amazed at the responses.

I do appreciate them. I never really considered the other side of my request and the idea that it might be considered rude. That is part of the reason I asked where you were from.

I tried to get across that I always lend mine and have been asked where we live. It is common and some stores the cashier does run it for you.

A few people responded from the area we were traveling through and said they would offer their card but would not ask.

The reason for the 50cents is I had 2 singles and a fifty dollar bill. With the discount I could use the singles without it I used the fifty. Not a big deal, I know but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I do want to clear one thing up though. I would never ask a mom with 3 kids, fumbling with their keys etc for the savings. I remember being there and the stress to remember everything, get shopping done as quick as possible.

I promise the person I asked was not rushing, had not put away all her stuff and would not have been inconvenienced.

Lastly, I will now carry some small sample size lipsticks in my purse for those in need. Cause hey - you never know!:rotfl:

This thread is all kinds of funny, &, just because it's gone on now for 9 pages, I guess I feel the need to chime in! :rotfl:

1. I have NO IDEA what my grocery card says as to who can or can't use it. I've never looked or read any of the fine print or disclaimers. That kind of stuff is just not on my radar.

2. In fact, I think I've lost my grocery card - it's not in my wallet. However, my grocery store will use your telephone number w/ no problem, so I just give the cashier our telephone number. Actually, it's not even our telephone number any more. We got rid of our landline & only use our cell phones now. But my grocery card is tied to the old landline number.

3. I have never asked anyone to use their card, because that's just not in my nature. So, I do have to admit, if someone asked to use my card, I might be a bit taken aback at first because it's so unlike me, but I would let them use my card.

4. However, if I were to ask, I wouldn't ask the person in front of me who is getting to ready to leave. I'd ask the person behind me or the person in the next line over. Also, I wouldn't ask for a person's card to save 50 cents on a bag of candy.

5. If someone asked to use my card, I'd have to say, "Sorry. I don't have my card w/ me. But here's my telephone number." We get fuel perks w/ our card, so extra points for me!

6. In all my years of going to the grocery store, I really can't recall ever being asked. However, the cashier did once ask me for another person. The person in front of me didn't have a card, so the cashier asked to use mine. I said, "Sure. But you'll have to use my telephone number."

And the whole thing was no big deal.

7. I've honestly never thought about the turkey angle. Actually, I really don't think much about groceries & grocery stores at all. Our store does do a free turkey-thing at Thanksgiving, & I think, if I remember correctly, you can only use your points for 1 turkey. So, I suppose, if someone asked to use my card around Thanksgiving, I'd need to check to make sure they weren't buying a turkey. But the cashiers at our store are normally pretty good, so I think they'd let me know. It's just really never been an issue.

8. If I did have a card &, for whatever reason I didn't want anyone else to use it, I wouldn't be rude or huffy about it. I'd just say, "I'm sorry. I can't do that."

9. This issue, though, really doesn't come up that frequently in my grocery store. I mean, it's not an every day event that I'm pondering, "Should I let this person use my card? Is there a turkey in their cart?"

10. I don't feel so much "pride in ownership" toward my card or some sense of "store loyalty" that I wouldn't let a store newbie use my card. It's a grocery store!

* If a person asked to use my lipstick, I'd say no.

:rotfl2: I knew I liked you! I got the feeling you are a nice person who would not hesitate to lend your card to someone, hence not understanding someone saying no to you. Have a great day! :)
