We went one year on Jan 1 and 2. We normally go during July and it was way more crowded than summer. The nice low crowds early morning only lasted a very short time. By noon, we were literally shuffling along down Main Street and could not see the ground in front of us. All FPs went quickly and lines were so long we kind of ran out of things to do.
We knew it would be crowded but even we didn't realize it would be that crowded. However, as AP holders, we just had a small list of must do's (HMH, IASW Holiday, etc). I wouldn't recommend a trip at this time for someone who is having a first trip and wants to see all DLR has to offer.
