We are going on holiday soon for a month. We are off to the USA for our first trip and will be going to WDW for 7 days.

A work mate/friend of my husbands is getting married while we are away. If weren't were going away we would be going to the wedding. Ayway her parents are coming up from the South Island and have been looking at hiring a car for the week they are here. It is going to cost them $500. Husbands work mate has asked if the mum can use one of our cars while we are on holiday and pay us $200 for it. Would you do it? I am in 2 minds about this.

The money would be great and help towards our trip.

IF we were to draw up some kind of agreement what should be in it?

I don't know what the laws and insurance regulations are in NZ, but here in the states accepting money for the use of your car would nullify your insurance in almost every case.

i didnot know that ducklite does that include if someomn e uses your car and gives you money for expenses for it, like gas or what ever?( good to know) but don't think I would let someone I don't know ever use my car...what if they had an accident could you be held responsible...what if they commited some kind of crime or didn't have a drivers permit or drove drunk ..too many scary senarios!

I don't know the laws in New Zealand, but here in the States, both ducklite and jann are correct.

In the U.S., if you rent your car, your insurance is nulified. Also, if anyone driving your car is in an accident or uses the car to commit a crime, you (car owner) can be held liable for the damages in full.

Don't do it!

Seems like your husband's work mate is guilting him into helping out b/c you won't be at the wedding. Sorry to say I would feel bad about missing the wedding but would have no problem turning down their request. Why isn't this mate offering to pay for his parent's rental, or helping/checking into a better rate? Family should take care of family first, especially when it's their wedding.

Sorry for a blunt opinion.

Assuming that you will be giving your friends a wedding gift, maybe the use of the car could be your wedding present. Like the others, I don't know New Zealand law but in NJ you can lend you car to someone and your insurance does cover it. agree with others that "renting" is an issue so taking any money is an issue. regarding gas etc. they can fill the tank while they use it and give it back full versus "paying" for gas.

I understand others legal concerns, it is just a shame that lawsuits etc have gotten us all to the point that we are afraid to be nice anymore. (have a father and sister who are lawyers so I am not lawyer bashing here!!).
