The Constitution was set up that way for a reason -- that reason still exists today. With naturalized US citizens, there is always some small degree of question as to whether their loyalty would be divided should problems arise between the US and their native country. It just presents significant problems to have any doubt whatsoever over the allegiance of the head of the nation.
