I saw a posting and just spoke with someone selling a $300 Disney gift card for $250. We would meet in person and do the exchange and he said I could call in to verify it right there.

would you buy it?
I've never done this and am not sure how safe it is. Seems ok to me but wanted to see if any of you ever had experience with something like that, negative or positive.
thank you!

~ is this the right place for me to post? if not, where should I post? Sorry if it's in the wrong place!

I have bought gift cards before. As long as you call and verify there is money on there, I say go for it! Definately meet in a public place since they know you will have $250 on you, just a safty thing!

As long as you can confirm the $$ on it I say go for it. I bought a Best Buy gift card from someone a while back, we did it over the internet and it worked out fine. I'm careful with it tho, if it feels hinky it probably is. :) Just be careful and you should be fine.

I guess my only fear would be that they would write down the card number, sell it to me, then use it online before I had to chance to use it. It's a slim chance, I'm sure, but it could be done. I think you'll know when you see the person if it's that kind of scam or not ;) Like the PP's said, as long as you are smart and safe about it, it should be okay.

that's what I was concerned about. I had thought if we met at the Disney Store, I could use the card right then and there and then return those items getting a new gift card back.
but unfortunately, i don't think that will be possible. :(

My DH has bought several cards like this and they were as they seemed. I was initially worried about the same thing, but the people he bought them from (off of craigslist) were honest. YMMV

Do not know about the Disney Card but others have there numbers covered by the stuff that covers lottery numbers. So if the stuff is scratched off then there is the possibility of them coping the numbers. If it is intact then there is much less chance of them having the numbers. You have to stratch it off to get the numbers to call them in.

Would you walk around Chicago streets announcing you are carrying a couple hundred dollar bills?

This could be a risk in your situation.

If I was buying it from somone I knew I wouldn't question it. But your senario has buyer beware written all over it.

I would not do it. There are too many unknowns.

- They could have the number.
- Something "goofy" could happen with the GC and you could not confirm with certainty to Disney that it has not been used.
- It could already be used.

To me $50 is not a big enough incentive to risk losing $250.

Plus, now that I type it out... Why would someone short-sell a $300 GC? That just doesn't make sense to me. If they know it's still valid, why would they be willing to lose $50? Doesn't make sense.

Good luck with whatever you decide,

Think about the savings which I figured out to be around the 17% range. Now decide is it worth the trouble of getting the card, making sure it is indeed worth amount stated, and then there is the issue of thinking did I do the correct thing. I would need the savings to be 30% or more range
before I would consider buying gift card.

Not sure if Disney cards are the same....but I bought a gift card for my sister from Wells Fargo....it never arrived in the mail....I called Wells Fargo, had them cancel it and reissue another. Thankfully I had the receipt that had the card # on it. Without that I would have been out of luck. With it I was able to cancel the card before someone used it, and have it reissued.

So...you might want to call ahead of time and ask Disney if the card is "lost or stolen" can it be replaced if you have the # off the back. Because if so, your seller could let you verify the dollar amount, take your cash and have your card cancelled before he's even made it back to his car. And THEN...what happens when you try to use it and it comes up as stolen? Yikes.

Ok, while I still wouldn't buy it, I can see the sense in short-selling a gift certificate. I received a $25 Starbucks gift certificate for Christmas from someone I do business with.....problem is that I don't drink coffee. Hubby drinks coffee but won't step into a "fancy schmancy" place like this, and only drinks rotgut coffee anyway, lol. So...I've got a $25 gc sitting here gathering dust......if I felt right about it I could see selling it for $$15 or 20 cash just so I get something out of it and the Starbucks lover gets a small discount. Instead it'll go into my gift stash...and hopefully some Starbuck loving friend will have a birthday soon, lol.

Now...why someone would be gifted a $300 Disney card when they're not Disney fans....ummm, can't really answer that one....bad relatives?

There was something on the news a few weeks back, just after Christmas, there is a new company that buys and resells giftcards from everywhere. People selling are usally those who got the cards as gifts and know they are not going to ever shop where the card is for, and they company gives very fair $$ money for them, also you get a good discount when buying. I'll have to try and find the name of the company, might be worth looking into!
