Would you be offended if your child's teacher gave them these?

Those are cute! As an SLP who has worked with many OTs, I've been told that the average age of kids learning to tie shoes has increased. Blame it on that lovely velcro I guess. Have you asked parents to practice tying shoes at home? I'm sure many haven't thought about it at 4 and 5 these days.

I have asked, but that doesn't seem to be working. And some of the shoes these kids come to school in are really more dress shoes. I swear, some of these parent spend more money on their kids' clothes that most adults do. It was warm yesterday and I asked one of the little boys if he wanted to take him jacket off. He said "It's not a jacket; it's part of my outfit, so I need to keep it on". LOL

My dad got these for my kids when they were that age, and they loved them.

What about 9 years old - do you think that's too old?

I think it would depend on the 9 year old MJ.

When DD was in Kinder, it was asked that all children be taught at home how to tie shoe laces since it took up so much instructional time. Or the child should get velcro or slip ons.

My kids knew how to tie their shoes, they just thought it was fun to have these laces that you just pulled & they were done. lol plus they had fun colors

:lmao: :thumbsup2

Maybe mention in class that you have extras to sell. :rolleyes1 The parents may want more for their other shoes once they realize how great they work. Or give them out for extra credit, or when a child does really well on a special project. ;)

Or just save them for next year :thumbsup2.

I don't think my 17 year old has tied his shoes in years. He leaves them tied, just loose enough so he can slip them off and on. I wonder if he still remembers how to tie his shoes? :rotfl:

OK, I'm just asking. Don't flame me. But how do kids learn to tie shoes if they've got velcro or these curly things?

I'm picturing a grown man in business suit with velcro shoes. :rotfl2:

Wouldn't be offended AT ALL! Great idea BTW....I'm considering buying them for our 4th and 5th graders! :rotfl2: (I threaten them daily with duct tape. I keep a roll on my desk as a reminder to tie their laces. They can do quite the tap dance when you act like you are going to come after their laces with duct tape! :rotfl:)

As a side note...WE have a new (Young and 1st year) first grade teacher this year. I saw her on bus duty tieing shoes. I got her aside and told her that first grade teachers don't tie shoes. (Kind of in a mock serious joking tone) She looked at me like I was crazy. I then told her that the other 1st grade teachers don't tie shoes. She looked a little curious and still confused. THEN I explained WHY....bathroom puddles! :scared: <- that was the look on her face!!!:lmao::lmao::lmao: PRICELESS! :D (Needless to say, she no longer ties shoes! "Tuck them in" is the phrase of the day! :D )

My son has done that for the last few years. He has knots and more knots in his shoes and he just slips them on every day. He wore one style of Reeboks for years that zipped, but when he graduated to Men's shoes, this was how he coped. He knows how to tie, but is too lazy, LOL

I think the laces are cute. I'm kinda find it sad that teachers are refusing to tie kids shoelaces:sad2::sad2: What if the child falls and gets hurts because his teacher refuse to tie their shoes laces

You poke fun, but if I'd let my husband, he'd wear paw-paw velcro shoes. :scared:

I'm an adult, and I still tie double knots in my laces. I just like them to stay tight while walking. :rotfl: And yes, I untie & tie each time I put them on or take them off.

With all the other options out there (velcro & slip-ons just to name two), it's sad that parents buy shoes with laces for their kids, & then don't teach them to tie.

If I were to bend down and tie one student's shoe, there would suddenly be AT LEAST five more shoes thrust in my face for me to tie.

That, and "the puddles" is why we don't tie shoes. :teacher:

**And I always have them find another student who CAN tie shoes. It's great practice for that student too.

I ask the kids to ask a friend. We have a few that can tie. I will give in and tie their shoes if we are going outside or it is becoming a safety issue. It IS really gross though, because those laces are dragging through everything. I really wish the parents would buy velcro shoes for school and save the tie shoes for home.

So.......I want to buy the curly, no-tie shoe strings for my kids for Christmas. They are like this

So, would you be offended if I put these in the stocking I am stuffing for the kids?
I love those things. I got them for my DD years ago, and I think she was older than kindergarten.
I hear you about those shoe laces! :headache: Sometimes they are wet from being in a puddle on the bathroom floor.
Hhhmmm...I don't think this ever occurred to me before this thread, but *gag* thanks for sharing.

DH is a businessman and wears mostly slipons. :confused3

Maybe these would work...my kids used them for soccer; it drove me crazy to see them running around on the field with untied shoes.

That, and water, and the bathroom. We call it the "potty party"--when one child asks to go, they all suddenly have to go.

Oh, and why do kids feel the need to come up and put their dirty shoe on my clean pants to tie?:confused3 As my mom would say "Were you raised in a barn?"

Well, my DH wears combat boots. I think they expect that he knows how to tie them. :rotfl2:

G'boy!

I'm just saying that there are more than two options...tie shoes or velcro...for a businessman. DH's are mostly slipon...but not because he doesn't know how to tie his shoes. ;)

Those lace things look neat. My kids would think it was a cool gift. My 7 and 9 year old can barely tie, so I mostly send them to school in velcros and slip-ons. I swear the few shoes they have with laces I double knot before they go to school and they magically unknot themselves. Now I have a picture of laces in bathroom puddles, so my kids won't be wearing any laces this week so I don't have to touch, ewwww!

As adult, I mostly wear slip-on Birks, slip-on Sketchers, clogs, flops. I only own two pairs of laced sneakers and I hate wearing them, laces are way short.

I wouldn't be offended either. I bought some of these from Walmart last year for my 5 year old daughter. She was still learning how to tie her shoes too. I thought they were cute but a word of warning, they are easy to put in but when u try to take them out, they will snap your hand like a rubber band. So don't pull too hard on them. Those darn things got me all the time. Hurt pretty bad too. Needless to say, I didn't take them out very often, even when I washed her shoes.:)

Try buying 100% cotton laces. The ones that come in most shoes are nylon and they slip. Someone also told me that if you wet the shoes and then tie them, they will stay tied for longer. Just wet them with water and not on the bathroom floor!
