I work for a great hospital. Financially successful, sweet position. It's about a 40+ minute drive from my house.

My hospital is opening another hospital- brand new and just built- literally 5 minutes from my house. Today applications posted for internal transfer to the new hospital.

I would still work for the same company. I'd keep my seniority/pay/sick leave etc. Nothing would change there. I also would only move, if I got my same position that I currently hold. Full time, weekend only, day position.

Pluses at my current job- nice people. Scheduler likes me ( which is always a plus ), we travel a couple big trips a year and I always get off the time I request. I know and like my manager. The "big cheese" bosses boss also likes me. I have lots of friends there that are begging me not to move.

Pluses for new hospital- 5 minute commute. Less "high acuity" setting. Being there from the get go of a new hospital and having opportunities ( not sure if I want them ) to move up the ladder.
But- I don't know who the boss or the scheduler will be....

Would you apply at the new hospital?

I guess it's all in how much you hate the drive. It sounds like you have it great where you are now, so why rock the boat? BUT, there's something to be said for working close to home! It saves money and precious time, etc. I'd want to know one thing. Would you being so close make them more inclined to call you in to cover for people? That happened to my mom a LOT when she was an RN. We lived blocks away from the hospital.

Tough decision. It's hard to get away from good coworkers. It's the reason I'm still on a non-monitored unit when I know I should get some telemetry experience before getting my Master's. I'm not a big fan of change. IMO, I would not move until I started to feel burnout. If you are already there and wanting something different, than go for it. However, if you are happy what you are doing now, why ruin a good thing?
