Would you accept a job without knowing the pay rate?

I only would if I was desperate - outside of that I wouldn’t.

My DD20’s college coach wouldn’t discuss money until after she committed. She said she only wants girls that want to play for her and the school, not for the money. It was a leap of faith when DD said yes to her coach. DD’s gut told her that this college is where she needs to be, and it paid off. The coach gave her an amazing scholarship, and my DD is incredibly happy - loves her coach, loves her teammates, loves her school and it goes on and on. God is good and has truly blessed her. My DD’s story is not about a job, but it’s kinda close to the same thing.

I respect you very much so please don't take this as anything negative toward you but there is no way I would play for a coach who refused to share what my scholarship would look like. That's incredibly disrespectful to the athlete and their family. Financials absolutely play a role in college decisions and the coach has no business withholding that information. Of course that is just my opinion. I am very glad it all worked out for your daughter!

No worries at all - no offense taken at all.

It really was a leap of faith. If my DD was indifferent about the school and coach, she wouldn‘t have considered it. But she just knew, it was kinda crazy, my DH and I could see it, she just knew it was right. So we supported her decision and I’m glad we did. Ive talked about this with many other parents of college bound athletes and they say they could never support this. But I told them, when your child knows, you’ll recognize that and want to support it, because when they’re happy they’ll play happy, go to class happy and more. I’m grateful every day that this worked out for my DD. She’s had no drama there, she’s made lifelong friends, she had an amazing freshman season and she met what I think may be her future husband (he’s great). She is truly blessed.

Do people not understand how taxes work?!? A higher tax rate is paid only on the dollars that are in the higher bracket! It doesn’t charge a higher rate on the dollars in the lower rate bracket. More money is more money.
You would be surprised! I know this acquaintance that refused a pay raise because she did not want to pay higher taxes, of course her boss is not going to continue arguing with her about it. It is really sad that learning about how taxes work is not emphasized more in school. We learned about it in our financial planning class, but not everyone had to take it.

And that a pay raise isn't always what it's cracked up to be when you have to pay more taxes off of it..
Just wanted to point out that a raise means you’d only pay higher taxes on the money that has put you in a different tax bracket. I don’t know what they are in the US (and I don’t want to know), but I’m doubtful a raise at a first job will ruin you financially with taxes lol
Wasn't quite what I meant.

Anyone who has gotten a raise especially in lower types jobs knows that the raise tends to get eaten up by taxes. I wasn't talking about moving into a new tax bracket but just rather your raise doesn't normally net you much. One year I got like a 5% raise but after accounting for the increase in what I paid for taxes of that it was like $100 for the year or something like that which ain't nothing really. And in retail or ones where you're paid that hourly wage and you only get raises in small amounts you might think a $0.50 to $1.00 raise is good until you start really looking into your take home pay.

What a rollercoaster ride that was, I kept talking to the screen. lol
Agree it is amazing how little people understand about it, & even after you explain it they still think they're going to pay more.
I read a story just yesterday about someone that wanted less of a raise because it put them in the next tax bracket. :scared::crazy2:

... my state for state income tax there's only 3 tax brackets so it's pretty hard to move up in tax brackets anyhow since for single it's if you earn $30K or more it's the top bracket. Federal is a different story.
$30k is the top tier? Interesting, I wish it was simple like that federally.

Correct if speaking for a single person

For a single person
3.1 percent for income under $15,000
5.25 percent for income between $15,000 and $30,000
5.7 percent for income $30,000 and over

For married filing jointly the top is $60K
3.1 percent for income under $30,000
5.25 percent for income between $30,000 and $60,000
5.7 percent for income $60,000 and over

They attempted a flat tax rate here recently but was veteod by the governor and an override was not accomplished.

When I spoke about getting a raise equaled more taxes (ETA: as in the raise would get eaten up/not all it's cracked up to be as I said in my first comment) I was speaking from personal experience given how my state works.

How do accept a job offer without a pay rate? A job offer should come in written form with a start date and pay rate. A verbal offer is not a job offer. It's just BS.
Context matters here. A mature adult would not. A 19yo looking at their first full time job coming straight out of high school at a family run auto shop? Yup. They would. OP's kid is definitely not alone.

We all learn and he will too, but until then best wishes to OP in maintaining their sanity over these next couple years!

It's quite possible it will all work out and maybe this is an honorable business where a handshake is their word. That would be nice and refreshing in this day and age. Unfortunately nowadays especially if you live in a right-to-work state even a written offer isn't worth much. Trust me I know. At 19 and your first job it's not that big of deal anyway.
