Would we look silly in wetsuits??

Our cruise is now officially less than a year away and I continue to get more and more excited!! I keep checking out the land and water temps in the Bahamas, even though I know this is a warmer than usual winter and that there are no guarantees for next year. The thing is, we are from Wisconsin and want to utilize every opportunity to be in the beach and play in the pools/water. I would not have booked a January cruise had it not been for my sister who is celebrating her 40th birthday and wants to be on the ship for her big day with us celebrating with her.

That being said, I was wondering today if I should think about wetsuits for my kids. Yes, it would be warmer, but only if they will wear them. Would they look totally out of place in them? I will have a almost 13 yr. old son while on the cruise. Currently, he is embarrassed by *everything* so if he is the only one with a wetsuit, I am sure it will not get worn. My youngest son still goes along with anything. I just wonder if wet suits in January on Castaway Cay might be the way to go. I won't be wearing one, but then, I am also OK with just hanging out on the beach and not going in the water. Would it be worth it? I don't know if we would ever wear it again though...

Can't say I have seen full blow wetsuits at CC in our cruises...there may have been but I did not notice them. I have seen kids in the water in January at CC several times...adults too!!! It can be hit or miss with the temps. Last January it was in the 80's when we were there (water was a bit chilly for me but plenty of kids in the water). Another time we were there and it only in the 60's with a strong wind...not too many people in the water then.

I have seen kids in long sleeve rash guards for sun protection. I am sure others will post their experiences as well.

I was thinkin' the same thing! We are going a year from now and I've already been looking at wet suits (at least shorts ones) I think I am bringing them! Worst comes to worst we won't need them but I'm packing them! I don't want my kids to miss out.

My DH and DS wore shorty wetsuits on our 1/3-8 Dream cruise a couple of weeks ago. There were a couple of other people in them as well. We got many comments like "what a great idea," "why didn't I think of that," and "wow, you nearly have the aquaduck to yourself with those suits!"

DH had his suit already since he dives. We ordered DS's suit on Amazon for $30 or less, iirc. DS is 6.

Not silly at all I just bought wetsuits for our kids to use next month. It's a win-win...If you don't need it-great, but If it's cold, you are prepared and may just have the Aqua Duck/Pelican Plunge to yourselves.

You can rent wetsuits if you don't think they will be used again. We found a place here in Destin that would rent them for 40.00 a week, so you may be able to find a surf shop in the Cocoa Beach area that would do the same. I ended up buying them because we will definitely use them again and the price was only a little more then the rental (on Ebay).

We've been on DCL twice in January, and I WISH we'd had wetsuits! I would definitely bring them.

I'm planning on buying or renting wetsuits for our December cruise. If its cold we wear them if not we won't. I'd rather have them and not need them. We'll go with the shorty suits instead of the long ones.

We were on the Dream last week and saw several wetsuits at Castaway Cay. None of the people looked silly. It was our 5th time at Castaway Cay so I didnt feel like I HAD to get in the water so I didn't because it was COLD! You could get in but it wasn't comfortable. If you haven't been to Castaway Cay before and you are going in Jan or Feb I would seriously consider bringing a wetsuit!

Let me be the first to say that I am a HUGE wimp! Anything below 82 degrees (water AND air temp!) and I freeze. When we went on our honeymoon cruise in August I froze on the ship, especially at night, or right after we got out of the pool/jacuzzi. Therefore, I am definitely getting a wetsuit for our cruise in March. DH keeps telling me it should be warm enough in March, but I know myself enough that I know I will freeze in the water and I will not go in if I freeze, but I want to go in to snorkel and do the jet skis. I found a couple places online in Cocoa Beach that rent wetsuits, so I think I will do that, and I don't give a toot if I look silly wearing one!

Oh my gosh, did I wish I had one for my visit to Castaway Cay a few days ago!! The weather was nice on the beach--especially by Floridian standards--but the water? Oh gosh, the water was arctic cold! It could not have been warmer than 50 degrees at most. I was shocked at the number of people frolicking in the water as if it were the height of summer! I love to snorkel, so I had pre-purchased my rental. Had I not done that, I would not have gone in the water, no matter how inviting and beautiful it was! I was already still trying to kick a cough from a residual upper respiratory infection, so my decision to ignore the screaming protests of my body as I turned ice blue was not a good idea. I feel terrible today in addition to being so depressed that I'm off the Dream! I don't care if you're from the North Pole, it can't be good to be swimming in water that cold without a wet suit. There's a reason the trainers at Sea World wear them year-round!

We were at CC on Tuesday and spent the majority of the day in the water. It was chilly when you first got in but after that it was perfect. The water was busy as was the beach. I saw one person in a wet suit (his wife was in the smallest bikini I have ever seen and his toddler was in a swim diaper!) It was perfect weather. Saw lots of red faces around the ship afterwards. Nassau however was probably chilly for most people. It was nice for us but defiantely overcast and cooler.

When it comes to personal safety (rays from the sun) and comfort I say who cares. Wear a wetsuit if you want to. I think they can be expensive though so other alternatives are those shirts that are made out of the same type of material as wetsuits but liter and they are only shirts. Also I know Walmart sells water shoes. They are not the slip-on type that some kids and adults do not wear but rather lace up shoes. They are wonderful and can be worn on the ship and around the beach. They are just great shoes to keep you from stepping on see urchants and whatnot. I suggest very strongly you get those no matter what they look like!

Why care what people think? If you look silly, so what? Do what works for you. You aren't hurting anyone else!

Just don't leave them sitting on an uninhabited pool deck chair!

Asking this question is like asking if you look fat in a dress. Nobody will tell you the truth.....but I will. Unless the water is frigidly cold you will look like a tool (please tell me that you will not also be putting zinc oxide on your face). There was some poor sad kid on our med cruise who's parents put him In a wetsuit and zinc everyday - he was a social pariah that other kids would laugh at, point at and ostracize (if you said wetsuits for the Alaska cruise then maybe....)

Ok ok, someone will tell me "maybe he had a med issue". Don't think so and if they ran a charity while on board we could have raised serious cash for bubble boy.

First, it's just not necessary.

Second, please see all answers above where they tell you that you shouldn't care what people think. That is true but come ON. Your going to put your kids in wet suits when everyone else is in shorts? Geez do you brush his hair for him in front of his friends too? Just kidding.

Third, the people telling you that you won't look silly are not from a beach climate, wear silly pants and think everyone is beautiful in their own way and that is simply not true.

My advice? Go to the ***********, Billabong, or first surf store you can find and buy your kids some cool beach wear for the cruise. Tshirt, shorts (+ for shorts that are made of a material you can wear on land and sea) and maybe cool button up short sleeve shirt.

Don't wear wetsuits unless there is a scuba tank on the back or an iceberg hits CC.
