Would This Statement Offend You?

It doesn't bother me. I think it is a juxaposition that makes people think. I wouldn't use it, though. As a long-time (well-known ;)) atheist I have made a concentrated attempt to purge the word "God" and "Jesus" from my vocabulary. Of course, most of those were expressions of surprise or cursing, so finding a more creative way to say the same thing isn't a bad thing.

bob you took the words right our of my mouth!

I do think I would look upon this person to be rather dumb, uneducated and tacky.

that sounds like the kind of thing i would put in my siggy, and while many people may find me tacky, i don't think the argument could be made that i am dumb. certainly no one could claim that i am uneducated (i have a MA and am in a Ph.D program).

i find it funny, but then again, i am one of those atheist people. and no, i don't get offended by the fishes on people's cars.

This thread has got me thinking. I guess things do seem funny when they make light of people who aren't "us".

So, you who are atheist and think it's funny - if you are passionate about the right to choose, or you are a a gun control advocate, or if you are feel very strongly against the war or you are involved in civil rights issues you are fine people making racial jokes and jokes about abortion, guns, killing civilians?

Just asking, not really arguing "for" letting this signature offend anyone - because I still don't think it's anything to get upset over.

I just wonder whether people are as OK with digs at things they feel strongly about. Just curious.

yes to all of the above. i can honestly say that i have laughed at jokes about pretty much everything that is important to me. just the way i was raised. teasing in my family is a sign of affection.

i am guessing that people who know me irl would agree with me that if there is humour to be found, i can find it in just about anything.

I guess you are a bigger person than I am. I think that if I hear people making fun of the things that are really important to me I feel a twinge of annoyance and think to myself, "Oh, shut up."

I'm against capital punishment, for example, and a joke about "frying" someone is never funny to me. I don't ever say anything, because I think that's what people are usually looking for, but I admit to not loving them so much.

I really appreciate all the opinions. I don't know why she posted it. Was it intended to ruffle her obviously religious friends? I don't know.

I am a catholic, therefore a christian. Personally, I dont go around broadasting that I am a christian. I don't wear a cross. I think the only time strangers would know I am is when they see me with ashes on my forehead during Ash Wednesday. And as I told my DSis, I find the posting, coming from a person who is a former christian, it comes across tacky. (I wouldnt say uneducated because although she may not have degrees, I do know her to be a book-knowledgeable person).

Since she is closer to DSis than to me, I recommended that she ask her what does she mean by the siggy. Maybe having lost the faith, she found the siggy and posted it in poor judgement...not really thinking on how it would come across to some of her friends.

I do appreciate all the opinions. I thought maybe Dsis was overreacting. Or maybe I wasnt reacting enough

I can laugh at pretty much anything (assuming it's funny, of course :teeth: ). Then again, one of my favorite comedians is George Carlin, who once said anything can lend itself to a joke, even the most serious topics. It's all a matter of perspective. :)

::yes:: I even laugh at atheist jokes.

Ah, next week she'll be a muslim or a buddist or something else. I doubt very much she knows what she believes and it wouldn't bother me either way.

As for the saying itself, well, it is humorous.

I'm not offended per se, but Christianity is a topic that I feel strongly about. A saying like that is just as offensive to us as a saying like "Thank Allah I'm not Islamic" would be to those who are actually Islamic. It was quite tacky, IMO.

Like I said, I don't take stuff like that personally, but it still bothers me a bit inside. :confused3

And calling others with differing opinions "dumb" and "uneducated" is a complete no-no. :sad2:

Calling others dumb and uneducated is dumb and uneducated. :rotfl:

Not funny, not offensive. I mean, I wouldn't laugh if I read that, nor would I find myself getting angry. I'd let it go.

My thoughts are along the same lines. I find it kinda sad in a way and I'm not even sure why but it's not something I'd get all worked up over.

I'm not offended. Good grief don't we have enough things to worry about than someone's signature?

I don't think it's funny, I don't think anything about it...it's just..whatever.

I can't imagine that atheists spend their time being offended by people's Jesus fish bumper stickers. I mean don't you just see it and move on?

I am not offended by fish bumper stickers, I just wonder why they feel the need to put their faith on the bumper of a car. I see a lot of religious bumper stickers and I wonder if they really think they are going to convert anyone. It would take more than a bumper sticker to make me believe in god.
