Would this bother you?

Let's say you are eating lunch at a local eatery, that is housed in an old "historic" building. I put historic in quotes, because while nothing eventful happened in the building, it is around 200 years old.

So you're eating lunch there, and since you know it is in an old building, with many additions over the years, you understand the kitchen area is pretty small.

Now the eatery is also known for their desserts. The dessert menu is one page long, listing all of the cakes, cheescakes, that they have. When you walk into the restaurant, close to the hostess stand, is a large bake case in which all the desserts are presented. Desserts are known to be shared at the end of the meal (huge massive 4 layer ckes, etc).

So because you know the kitchen is small and the building is old, while eating your meal in one of the dining rooms, you look out the windows to see that the "bakery" kitchen, is across the parking lot housed in an old cotton warehouse. And walking out of the bakery kitchen, you are surprised to see one of the kitchen staff carrying a freshly prepared iced cake across the parking lot (really the width of a one lane road) over to the restaurant to be placed in the bake case.

Now, would it bother you that the cake was carried for 25 or 30 seconds from one kitchen, outside, over to the restaurant?

--------------------------------------

I had this experience today during my lunch. I was eating in said historic building when I overheard a lady at another table exclaim "OMG! Look at that cake she's carrying. It's not even covered or anything." (I wasn't evesdropping, the lady said this quite loudly to everyone at her table).

At first I thought that she brought up a good point, but then I thought about it, and realized that the bakery kitchen is a good 20 steps away or so from the side entrance of the dining room I was in. The cake was prepared in an inspected kitchen, so I had no qualms with it. I also had the thought that every restaurant kitchen has so much ick that we don't get to see (and critters, you know they are there), that an uncovered cake should be the least of anyone's concerns (thank you Gordon Ramsey and his "Worst Kitchens")

So, would it bother you?

Would you eat there after seeing that -- the uncovered cake?

I would. More dessert for meeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

This is why I don't eat cake. Just kidding. It wouldn't necessarily bother me but I would wonder some things like are there a lot of birds in that area? What do they do when it rains? Do they ever set the cake down for a second while they get the door? Etc. So it would only bother me if other issues arose.

It wouldn't bother me. I'd eat that cake right up!

Now if it was raining or something, I'd hope they'd cover the desserts when they brought them over. I wouldn't want to eat a cake that had been rained on.

Wouldn't bother me. My brother works in a restaurant and my SIL use to waitress there. Though not quite as bad as Gordon Ramsey and Kitchen Nightmares, they did tell me a few things that I would rather have not known.

In cases like this....ignorance is bliss.

Because it was outside? Have you never dined on the patio of a restaurant, or eaten a picnic? No, it wouldn't bother me.

I just don't get the woman's concern. :confused3 Is it the dangers of outside air?

:confused3 I really have no idea. I was peacefully eating my soup, engaged in texting a friend every few minutes, when the woman at the other table annouces this. I guess she figures that somehow, some ick would get on it being carried outside.

Look at all those cakes they make on cake boss and the wedding cake shows, they have to transport them and drive them all over the place. The one group in NYC even get into taxi cabs...

It wouldn't bother me a bit. Isn't inside air quality usually worse than outside anyways?

The restaurant is near the river, but not really a lot of birds. The regular restaurant kitchen is near the river side of the restaurant, but due to a huge embakment leading up to the river, the restaurant could not expand their kitchen that way, so hence using the rennovated cotton warehouse on the other side.

:thumbsup2

Good point.

Like I said, didn't bother me, but once she said it, it was as though the others at her table were finding faults with the restaurant.

Unless this was in the desert in which sand gets kicked up by the wind, no. I guess the woman never picnicked outside. :confused3

I wonder if said woman is aware of the "bug allowance" in foods? I try not to think specifically about that. :rotfl: I wouldn't think a bit about a cake being carried uncovered outside. I imagine she would have felt quite silly had she been reminded of picnic and all the other outdoor food stuffs.

I have to say that this would not bother me at all. I would eat the cake! :) And I am very picky and germ phobic, and a clean freak about restaurants. I am sure that are ickier things that are never seen ( that we just don't think about ) yes thank you Gordon.

My thoughts exactly. I imagine if some bird droppings or something fell from the sky onto the cake, as unlikely as that would be, the cake would have been discarded. I think the other table was being overly dramatic.

I've just started the South Beach Diet and right now I would eat that cake if it was run over by a car, especially if it was chocolate. :cake:

It wouldn't bother me at all and I'd definitely eat it.

But, I'll always eat cake. Always.

Of course I would still eat it:lmao: But, I do think they probably should be covering it just because you never know!

I told somebody about the bug allowance the other day and they were shocked!:lmao:

I personally would be more worried if I found out it was prepackaged and that they were trying to pass it off as their own. Restaurants do that all the time.
