Would The Weakening Pound Make You Cancel?

It wouldn't make me cancel but it would definitely curtail my shopping. Last year in April I purchased a handbag for $598 this cost me £299 at $2 to the pound. With the current exchange rate it would cost me £427 at $1.40 to the £.

Half of the fun of going to Orlando is the shopping, but with the current exchange rate I would not bother as much. Perhaps 1 day instead of my usual 3!

I was hoping to pay for our deposit of $200 for our room reservation through disney US. I should have done it last week when it was 1.45 but was being greedy hoping that it would creep upto 1.5.
I am sure you have checked Disney UK for prices but thought I would mention it. Don't know anyone booking with Disney.com recently, co.uk have had the better prices by far. Even with any AP, AA discounts applied they seem very expensive. Deal I have for August cost £2,164 now over £4,000 but with Disney.com its about £5,800(probably £6,000 now with latest drop in £). Maybe you are lucky and found a good deal with .com.

With money not "making" much here we have decided that this is the year that we buy a new car (taking advantage of low prices and deperate dealers:thumbsup2 ) and make home improvements. Hopefully this planning works in our favour for next years trip:thumbsup2

I almost went round dealerships this afternoon, my van is only 2 year old done 6,400 miles which is the point I usually change(last time cost me only £3,000 to swap). Same with the BMW, 3 years old done 20,000 but both are like new. I just don't have the enthusiasm to go barter with salesmen. Not helping my Barclays shares are just about worthless today. Anybody have a spare rope?:rotfl2:

It sounds like most folk have made good plans. Wish I had booked dining plan with uk prices. I think anyone wanting to stay on site now would be better off booking just room and tickets on 14 for 10 uk deal, than waiting for US dining plan. I want to stay in an offsite villa, so I guess I'd be better off booking through a uk owner.

I sell stuff to folk in US and I must admit, it feels more worthwhile now the rate has changed.

Wayne - you would be mad to sell a van with such low mileage. BTW - I have had good luck buying and selling both vans and cars on ebay - just my own, not for profit. And your Barclayshares only seem worthless. Were you planning to cash them in? If not, you've not lost anything until you sell - you don't need that rope.

Its crazy but to keep swapping every 2 years costs £3,000 (£1,500/year) to keep this I have will depreciate £1,000 in the next year and cost £400 to service and RFL, plus the slight tax benefit to swap makes it actually cheaper to swap for new every 2 year.
I was going to sell the Barclays shares last year but decided to wait a bit, won't bother selling them now so no actual loss yet. No rope needed for me but I bet many feel like it.
Wish we had hit the bottom of all these problems but I think its only just starting.

Hi

No dont worry too much about it, never been one of those who walked miles to get a couple of extra cents or whatever to the pound. Plus the fact that in July 07 we had $2 to the £1 so cant complain too much

im not sure I am going to be affected, I have booked my villa for 3 weeks through a uk owner with pool heat at £1200 (4 bed 3bath) oct 13-nov 3rd. I have got flights with virgin, car hire and 21 day ultimate tickets for £3900. Now I don't know if i have a good deal..? I am worried when I look at the price of meals in usa and think what that will cost in pounds by the time we go..but i figure i saved £300 just on pool heat? do you lot agree?? Am I going to be vastly out of pocket?

Certainly wouldn't cancel this August's holiday .... in fact I've changed our accommodation to a 5 Bed villa at Ginn Reunion! (Deb please sort your photobucket out, I need to see your pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

However ................ Unless the £ recovers quite considerably over the next 12 months, we will be staying in the UK for 2010 (but don't quote me :rotfl2: )

Unless we really couldn't afford to go then no, we love the USA in general and a good exchange rate is a nice bonus but not a major deciding factor. We'll (or rather i'll..!) just be cutting down on shopping whilst there, i've always gone way overboard in the past anyway so the current exchange rate may end up being a good thing for me in a way *lol*

It wouldn't make me cancel my holiday, after all, (like the rest of you I'm sure), I work bloody hard for my holidays and as others have said I've benefited from $2/£1 exchanges in the past - I'd still go just cut my cloth.

We made a conscious decision this year that we weren't going till 2010, though that was more to do with the extra cost of going for three weeks as opposed to two, and staying onsite at the Yacht Club and onsite at Universal - it'd probably cost the same as staying at less salubrious hotels going this year and next, but it feels a bit better giving ourselves a little breathing space. :thumbsup2

We definitely wouldn't cancel! Even if another crisis at DH's work :faint: prevents him from going in April, I'd go alone! ;)

As we bought into DVC when the exchange rate was the amazing $2.1/£, our accommodation costs (and I'm including the dues) are waaay more reasonable than they've ever been. Flights are our main expense and, if anything, they've become slightly cheaper - we're paying the same for UC in April as we paid for PE back in the summer of 2006... :thumbsup2

We'll still hit the stores - I hate shopping here but it's all part of the vacation for us and, unless it's $1/£, the things I look to buy are still good value in the US...

No - we won't be cancelling. Even with current exchange rate the price of meals off-site are much cheaper than at home. We have a great deal on flights and most of our stay is using our DVC points. We also have a great price on a hotel by Sanibel Island. Car is booked in £s - just need to sort out WDW tickets. Tickets may be the place were we compromise - we were considering annual passes...perhaps not now...

We won't be cancelling as we have paid for almost everything in £'s (flights, hotel, car, disney dining plan). All we need money for is souveneers and snacks and I can certainly cut down on them if it means I'm going to Disney!!!!

The only thing the exchange rate has affected is my cruise - because I paid for that in $'s a couple of months ago it cost me a couple of hundred more than it would have when I booked almost a year ago - which means we can't afford to upgrade to POFQ as we were hoping. But I'm going ot Disney so I don't care where I'm staying!!

Don't forget that Annual Passes are much cheaper with the DVC discount.

I have $600 to pay on my cruise and I am kicking myself for not paying it off when I paid the rest but I certainly won't cancel the cruise or the holiday.

DH and I last went ot Florida in 2004 and this is our first trip with our little girls so nothing on earth would make me cancel. We have 5 nights at Old Key West with Free Dining booked on Disney UK and paid in pounds, 7 night cruise paid in dollars and nearly paid for and then 5 nights in a villa booked through a UK owner so no price problem there. Flights are booked through Virgin holidays (paid for entirely with Tesco Clubcard deals) Car hire about to be booke din £'s

I figure with two small children in tow we are not going to do as much shopping as we would have with just the two of us and with free dining for the first five days then the cruise with food included for the next 7 days I really have only 5 days of full food bills and souveniers to worry about (although of course we need to budget for tips during free dining and on the cruise as neither are included)

would we cancel this years no,we got a good flight and have dvc plus some nights at po
Will it make differance to our plans yes, more time poll hoping/doing disney parks as have plenty of days on tickets from last year
Eating would cut down from everouthernight at a sitdown to every 3 nights
The only thing which would stop me from going in 2010 is work not the $ rate as in construction its a bit depressing at moment(and tables arnt helping)
We will go in 2011 as we have to use points but if unable to finance would rent out points to cover dues

I still have $1,591.50 to pay:sad:
Paid double deposit $1,500 which cost me £750, now the balance is going to cost (at rate now) £1,136, £340 more than if I had paid it all when we booked.
I was really tempted to cancel last night, the $1500 deposit would now refund at £1,071, making a £321 profit. but we talked ourselves into keeping the cruise for now.:goodvibes

Paul, I was hopeing you were buying me a drink in August, has it been cut from your budget? :rotfl2:

But as you spent that £321 profit you would have imagined yourself on the Magic sailing off into the sunset!

I was going to pay off and then read some things that predicted a small recovery in spring \ summer so I will leave it until the last minute and risk it - worst case scenario I will have paid over the odds but I figure on $600 it won't make a MASSIVE amount of difference.

You are right, the whole week would be saying we should be boarding now, we should be at Castaway Cay now...pirate night....chocolate buffet......
Its only a few extra £'s

Just make sure you leave the ship in good order, we get on day you get off.:goodvibes

We won't cancel either ! we are going in october. Luckily our mortgage has come down considerably ( we now spend more on our food bill :rotfl2: ) so the extra savings are being plowed into the holiday savings fund.
