Would it be weird to send the vet a thank you card?

As I posted earlier in the week, we had to put our 14 year old dog to sleep on Monday.

My regular vet has been on vacation unfortunately for the last two weeks of Max's decline, but the vet who took care of us was great. And the day we put Max to sleep, she made a horrible situation as peaceful as possible. She was sympathetic and also made us feel very good about our decision. She made Max comfortable to the end and I'm so happy with her for that.

Sooo, can I send a thank you note for their kindness? And do I address to just the vet that was there that day, both her and Max's regular vet, or just the entire hospital?

thanks.

You should absolutely send a heartfelt card, it will mean the world to that vet. It will help her get through the next hard day with a situation like yours. Sorry for your loss:(

Not weird at all. I would send a thank you note to Max's regular vet and a separate one to the vet that helped Max get to the Rainbow Bridge. I think it is important to thank Max's regular vet, especially if Max was with him/her for a long time. Vets are a crucial part of keeping our pets healthy, and with us for as long as possible.

We did the same thing for our vet when we had to say goodbye to our pup.

I posted on your other thread, and I'm so very sorry for your loss. I hope you are doing ok.

I would absolutely send one. We just got a new kitten and tried a new vet and they traumatized her, and me with how harsh they were. I can say that finding one that truly cares would be wonderful, and if you found that, absolutely let them know!!! I would address it to anyone that you felt truly made a difference.

When my old dog died suddenly on a Sunday night we had to take him to the big animal hospital in our area, not his regular vet. The vet who we talked with and handled it for us actually sent us a sympathy card with a personal note I don't know if that's just standard everywhere now or not but it was just such a nice thing to get.

I say send it. Everyone likes to hear their work is appreciated.

I'm a vet. Some of the nicest, most heartwarming cards that we receive are when we've put an animal to sleep kindly and compassionately, whether we're their regular veterinarian or an emergency vet.

It's certainly not required or something everyone does, but it is much appreciated and not weird at all.

We did that. We also brought a basket a goodies for the staff. They truly loved our dog and he had had to spend the last week of his life in their hospital, so they really got attached to him as well. After it was done, the vet hugged and cried with me. We just addressed it to Dr. XXX and staff. We also included a picture of our dog and it was put in our file that I can see every time we bring in one of our other animals.

We got a sympathy card from them and also a note that they made a donation in his name to a rescue group. We love this vet and her practice!

We always have, and we have always gotten a sympathy card from the vet.
We even got a phone call 2 weeks afterwards from the vet to check on us .

But we always seem to get the animals with health issues so we are frequent visitors to the vet, and huge contributors to their operation :sad2:

Which is part of the reason the cat we lost in October, will be our last pet. Tired of tears, tired of drained bank accounts, and finally we will have a house without animal damage (and I won't go into how much that is costing).

I think this is pretty standard. In addition, my vet's staff makes a plaster cast of the pet's footprint as a keepsake.

I would definitely send one. Our vets are so kind to our dogs and have always taken the time to explore options for whatever their ailments have been (we've had everything from broken tail amputations to chronic ear infections). Both the vets and the techs have been so wonderful with our dogs, as well as my parents' dogs. I think thanking people goes a long way in boosting the type of service they provide and making them feel like it's worth it.

I think a heartfelt thank you is always the way to go, every time I receive a thank you note or card I'm always appreciative!

I hear you loud and clear!

We had our female Beagle put down in October due to Lymphoma, our cat put down last week due to bathroom issues (we think he had a blockage in his intestine), and are down to one Beagle, who on Monday I discovered had a lump on his upper jaw. He goes in for surgery on Thursday to see if it is cancerous or just an infected tooth root.

We decided years ago that as soon as our 3 pets were gone we were not getting anymore. Our cat destroyed every rug/piece of furniture. Our dogs were great, but it is hard to get someone to watch them when we want to go on vacation.

We love our animals, but we won't be getting anymore of them anytime soon.

I think I is totally appropriate to send a thank you card to both regular vet and emergency vet.
:)

Hugs to you.

Eight dogs here, so we consider the vet and her staff members of the family.

I always send a thank you and a bagel/fruit tray (or something similar).

The one time that I was so overcome that the vet and her two techs actually came to my house to put my dog down in our living room, on their own lunch hour, I went all out and got all three gift certificates for spa days/movies/dinner out.... I will never forget how much that meant to me (I was literally on the edge of a nervous breakdown over it...).

Absolutely! Now I am wishing we had done this when we had to put our cat to sleep a few years ago. The vet & staff were wonderful with him and with us, trying to give him the best care possible and make him comfortable until there was nothing really left that they could do. As a nurse, we receive cards a lot of times from parents whose child passed away that we either cared for a lot or who passed while they were at the hospital, thanking us for our care, and sometimes with a picture that we can look back on and smile as we remember the good times we had with that patient and their family.

I sent a card to the vet after we had to put Minky down--she was so wonderful with him and with us. The staff made a plaster cast of his paw print and asked me if I'd like to pick it up in a couple days when it dried. Of Course!~ I baked up some cookies and took them to the vet and her staff--they deserved each and every chocolate-ty morsel!

I sent a card to the vet's office after we lost our sweet kitty. They were so kind and helpful through his illness. It meant a lot to me to be able to say thank you.

Just dawned on me, I got a card from my vet when my cat passed away, but not from my mom's doctor when she passed away. Best part is, my MOM would have found that amusing.

Ours did too when we lost a cat several years ago. I was so touched and did send them a thank you note. I definitely think you should if you want to.

Our vet has thank you cards posted on a wall in the waiting room. Some were to thank for saving dogs life, (whether through surgery, or other means), and other cards were to thank for helping during the difficult time of losing a pet. Most cards even had pics of the dogs.

One night when we had to take our dog to the vet a 1am, I paced the waiting room, and read all the thank you cards.

I think it's very appropriate if you want to do that.

DH is a vet and appreciates the thank you cards. This is not easy for them either - he came home the other day and had 3 euthanasias in a row - he truly feels sad for each pet.

Also, some clients are not very nice, so the kind words help make up for that too. Please send one!
