Hello all!
i was reading another thread concerning the flu outbreak. I've already gotten my flu shot however, my girlfriend has not. Plus the fact that this year, the viral strain (sp?) is a little different than the vaccine. Anyhoo, would it be weird if we wore surgical masks all day? We're asian so im sure SOMEONE is gonna crack a SARS joke...hahaha.... I just don't wanna have all of this planning and such a well deserved vacation go to waste in bed. I'd rather look funny then be ill. comments please. :)

I wouldn't think SARs I would think Michael Jackson.

Anyway I think you would be better with the anti bacterial hand washers and steril bads for tables, chairs and what not. There was another thread regarding the flu and what people were doing. You should look for that tread it had good ideas of what to do.

That seems a bit extreme ... I just came back and noticed there were quite a few people with coughs and sniffles. I'm not too sure about the flu. Just remember to wash your hands and try to avoid rubbing your eyes and nose :) Pack warm clothes for the evening if you're going to be out at night. I found it was very cool at night sometimes.

If you're worried, buy some cold medicine before you leave. If you don't have a car, supplies can be limited at the gift shop. We brought Tylenol Cold and some cough drops with us and were fine :) Other than that... I'm not too sure there is much else you can do...

If you choose to wear masks, you'll likely be the only ones. I've been in the parks every day this week and have seen no one in masks. In fact, even when SARS was at its worst, there were no surgical masks at WDW.

So ... you can certainly feel free to wear them, but you'll definitely be stared at. And you'll probably have people moving away from you in lines and in pre-show areas, since they're more likely to think that YOU have something you're trying to keep away from them, then the other way around!

haha!
thnx for the replies!
yeah, i was thinking it would be a bit extreme. My girlfriend said i was being a bit too cautious too. hehe. just a thought. :)

Yes that would be weird. I work in a school and I wash my hands constantly, followed up by antibac gel, I don't touch railings or doorknobs. So far so good this year, knock, knock, knock on wood.

get that hand sanitizer junk that my girlfriend always springs on me... smells like a darn hospital...

guess its all worth it though in the end... hospital smell... hospital bed... hmmm

If you're going anywhere between Jan 6-14, you won't be the only one in a mask!! Since my DS7 just had a transplant, he has to wear a mask "anywhere there is more than 10 people together". So, that would be WDW!!! Still iffy whether or not we will be able to go because of crazy lab results right now. But, if we do go, he'll have a mask on!!!

Perhaps you could decorate the masks in a Disney theme? Like Pooh and Goofy noses! People will scour the gift shops looking for their own! :hyper:

I hadn't thought about masks for the parks, but I am thinking about wearing one on the plane.

A surgical mask does not protect you from germs/bacteria/virus, it only protects others from you. You must wear a respirator (probably a disposable N95) to protect yourself. Surgical masks are worn by medical staff in the OR to keep their germs/etc out of the body cavities of the patient. The gaps around the mask allow lots of stuff to get in. You need something tight fitting to keep out the bugs.

If you wear a surgical mask, you will look like Michael Jackson and they may ask you to stay away from children.

Wash your hands frequently.

really?! i thought it offered some protection. hmmm. well, constant handwashing and disinfectant gel will be in order. thnx for helping me make another right decision. much appreciated.

To be the bearer of bad news for the "Mask" croud. Surgical masks are really only good for about 30 minutes before they need to be replaced. Once they are damp, from the moisture from your breathe, they are no longer effective. But if it makes you feel better, then go ahead.

I think the plane would be more of a concern (because of the recirculated air) than Disney. Just my two cents.
