Would Chef GOrdon be wasted on my DH?

Looking at HHI for next summer, and it will be our 15th anniversary. THis year I took DH out to Shula's at WDW for our anniversary -- it was WONDERFUL. But I should note that DH is a man of simple tastes -- SHula's is meat, potatoe, ala carte, nothing too bizarre. My dh would have cringed just looking at the Blue Zoo menu, I feel certain. As I've mentioned before on other threads, the man gets clammy over words like "wasabe". He can't even handle "bits" of onion. I have to use either onion powder or mulchify the little suckers into onion pulp in my own cooking!

And he doesn't like wine, either.

SO... wouldn't a night with Chef Gordon be a waste on him, or no? ANybody else take a dining fussbudget with them?

And if not Chef Gordons -- can anyone recommend a nice place to dine for an anniversary on HHI?

If it's just the two of you, then I'd say you'd probably find a cheaper alternative that would work just as well. If there are more than just the two of you, I'm certain Gordon could work a menu that complies with your DH tastes, but suites everyone else as well.

Outside of that choice I likes the Old Oyster factory, we had seafood there but I believe they do pretty good steaks as well and it has a wonderful view at sunset. http://www.oldoysterfactory.com/
Crane's tavern has had some reasonable reviews, although I haven't eaten there myself http://www.hiltonheadisland.com/cranestavern/menu.htm
This looks like it may fit the bill http://www.eugeneswaterfront.com/

and there are a number of ideas here http://www.discoverourtown.com/TownPage.php?Town=180&Cat=Dining

Gordon can/will prepare whatever you will enjoy and will include you in the intricasies of the meal as much (or as little) as you'd like. If your DH would enjoy a nice steak and a potato - I know Gordon can handle the prep.

The wine parings are included with the meal, but I suspect Gordon would also supply beer for those who'd enjoy that more. (Not sure about mixed drinks.)

There are many great dining spots at HH including several within walking distance of the resort. (Scott's Fishmarket is a favorite, the Harbormaster has a good selection of beef, the Kingfisher and many others are nearby or within a short drive.)

I wouldn't hesitate to contact Gordon ( HHIChef@aol.com ) and see what he'd suggest for your special event. The ambiance of the room overlooking the Atlantic Ocean certainly adds a lot to overcome any "fussbudget" tendencies.

Enjoy!

I am a fussy eater also. Though I have been starting to like onions and tomatoes recently. My favorite steak on HHI is at Alexanders. You will pass it on the way to the beach house. They have a nice screened in porch over the water. There might be more romantic settings, but most of the places like Old Fort, etc. but a wine glaze or mushroom sauce on the meat. At Alexanders it is a New York Strip with salt, pepper, and a hint of butter. It is served with very good hash brown potatoes and green beans. The salad is with fancy greens, but they have ceaser, so you could ask for just romaine.

IMHO, this would be a better anniversary dinner than Old Oyster Factory. That place is a family place, more casual, and very crowded and loud. (Alexanders is the same owners as OOF, so it won't hurt anyones feelings if you don't go to one or the other.)

ps. If you go to Alexanders between 5-5:45 pm, you could get this $32 dinner for 13.95.

As for chef gordon, I am certain that his level of chef experince could create a menu that all would enjoy. You get to email him and set up the menu.

Eugenes is very good also, it overlooks the water, but can be tricky to find.

I think you can look at alot of menus at www.hiltonhead.com

I also forgot about some other places that we like.

Across the resort are Scott's, and San Miguels. The both have harbor side dinning and live music outside. We are not crazy about Kingfishers and the Italian place.

For Italian we like Antonio's, but it is pricey. They have steak, but they fix it fancy. their menu says steaks prepared at chef's inspiration. I not sure what that means so I went with veal parm and it was good. It is a nice setting for a anniversary dinner.

I told in front desk that it was my inlaws anniversary, and they sent up some ballons and champange, and put happy ann. on the tv screen on the resort channel.

How do you think your DH would respond to a simple meal cooked exactly to his liking by a great chef? If that would tickle or flatter him, then it's worth it. If he would only ask, "What's the big deal?" then take him elsewhere. Either you both love your anniversary meal or it's a waste of money.

I am also a fussy eater, and Chef Gordon was extremely accomodating. I explained my preferences, and he custom designed a menu for me. He did not mind at all. The best part: IT WAS WONDERFUL! Exactly what I was hoping for!

My DH is another story....he will eat anything put in front of him, so he was able to pick something from Chef Gordon's standard menu.

The experience is wonderful and I really recommend it. If I were you, I'd go for it.
