Hi - Just wondering if anyone has been to Siesta Key and what it might be like in the summer? We are thinking of renting a place on or near the beach next summer but have a couple concerns.

1. Is it too hot to really enjoy the beach? (We live in Massachusetts and are used to vacationing in Maine in the summer...where the water is CHILLY.

2. Does red tide happen a lot in the summer?

3. Is there enough to keep us busy for a couple weeks?

Any advice, suggestions, or ideas would be really appreciated.

We never seem to have time to really explore Florida since we always travel during school breaks. We thought summer might be a nice chance to do a little exploring.

Thanks so much!

1. the water temp is mid 80's, perfect for us. parking can be a problem, especially after 9:30 in the morning. Siesta Beach has a large, free lot, but it fills quickly.

2. red tide's too hard to predict. you don't know if, when, or why a bloom will happen. SK hasn't been hit too hard the last couple of years.

3. I don't know if I could spend two weeks anywhere. starting in Sarasota and moving down the SW coast you notice a trend: beaches, fishing, shopping, dining, relaxing.

We may go there this summer too, to visit family. Depending on our schedule, we might go in August after schools there are back in session. Do you think that will make a difference with crowds?

The most difficult thing we've encountered is finding places to stay that don't require a full week!

There's a decent amount of stuff to do if you want to explore. There is a state park with aligators (myakka) and lots of different beaches. We like Caladisi (sp?) island state park up past St. Pete although it's far. We also went to Sarasota Jungle gardens, which was fun for the little kids.

You didn't say where you live. That might make a difference depending on what you consider to be hot and humid. Personally I love summer in Florida but my DH can't take the humidity. August can be the worst if you aren't used to it.
