I can understand why you didn't like a balcony with such a high wall. I can imagine that it makes the room itself feel very dark.
I had a lovely balcony and view and still, the room felt a wee bit dark without lights on.
I wonder how many of the balconies have this high wall effect. I've read on other threads about people getting them .It sure would be nice to have a list, becasue it appears that some people really like them while others really don't. (I read that one lady had a toddler so this kind of balcony enclosure made her feel safer for her little one.)
Forthwith is another of my BRILLIANT suggestions (well, at least I think they are brilliant

)
There should be a full description of every room in the resort in that resorts computer. Know how you get assigned a room but it's not ready (even tho it is supposed to be room ready) ? Well, even without giving out the room number, the CM could read off the description of the room. " Your room is on the 4th floor like you requested. It has a huge balcony with a wall enclosure instead of the typical slats. The wall is fairly high, but its great for toddlers safety and I see you have a 2 year old. It's a handicapped room, but since it's a 1 bedroom you have a huge jacuzzi tub and a roll in shower. Of course it's non-smoking and the view is of the quiet pool with the TOT beyond."
So...no surprises, which often makes the intolerable surprise!!! a tolerable acceptance. People can often handle tradeoffs: some of us would take smoking for an awesome view; some couldn't or wouldn't.
I think it behooves the resort (and saves everyone time/money) to be as upfront about the room assignment as possible. I think the frustration and anger /resentment comes more from nondiscloure, feeling manipulated, lied to, as opposed to the actual room assigned.
Many people have stated that the 'room assignor' can't read minds. How very true!! Especially when my request goes through a CM in Kansas who has never been to the World, gets translated into 'computer' and then is read by the room assigner. This way, it is between the guest and the computer, which could , for example: pull up all same day checkout nonsmoking rooms in the standard wing and let the guest choose from available options.
It wouldn't add much time to the check in process at all. Let's say 12 nonsmoking standard view studios popped up. the CM could quickly see that 3 of them were on the top floor...and 1 is HA, 1 is down at teh very far end, and one is near the elevators. The guest says...well I love the high floor. What about the one near the el? THe CM pulls up the description which states : normal room (meaning it has a tub, regular slat balcony etc.) view of the retaining pond and grassy area. CHACHING! When the guest gets the room at 4:15...there are no surprises!
Sure, the last guy checking in might not have many options. Might only have one option. I can't think of anything (using the room ready system at hand) to ameliorate that EXCEPT that Disney could go ahead, when they rennovate, and give some of the less desireable to many rooms a few more desireable 'offsets'.
We've seen here on the Dis that people are very varied in what they actually prefer. I think that using my brilliant idea (

) would end up with it sorting itself out and that we'd all get closer to the room we want. And the onus for that would be on us...no one to blame.
So whoever wants to vote me King of the World, can do so now!
