Anyone worry about swine flu (H1N1) when travel in DLR? We're planning to go in mid August but not sure if it's "safe" for our kids (2 and 4 yrs old). The California health website said H1N1 is "wide spread" but I can't find any more information. Thanks!

we've been 3 times in teh past 2 months and i am one who is considered high risk b/c i have asthma and am on immunosuppresents and i've been completely fine (well except for complete exhaustion but it is disney) yes it is widespread out here in california but i dont think its anything to cancel disney over...to be honest, the thouhgt of swine flu never even crossed our minds while we were there

Widespread just means that cases have popped up in many different parts of california.....it doesnt really have anythign to due with the number of cases perse as it is where the cases have been

I wouldn't worry too much. This virus is not prevalent enough yet. My son is a Diabetic and he was just sick a while ago and we spoke with a pediatrician about this bug and she said there is nothing to worry about as of yet.

There are many viruses out there and the H1N1 is just another virus that has become about.

The media tends to really scare people and it's important to talk to your doctor.

Go and enjoy Disney. We are and our son is Diabetic and is prone to colds, flu viruses. You can't stop living because of one virus.

I wouldn't worry at ALL! I was down there when the whole swine flu first became an issue, like end of april early may for a deca conference. Back when everyone was making a SUPER big deal of it. We saw a lot of people wearing masks, and all you saw on tv or the newspaper was SWINE FLU EPIDEMIC! While we were in CA, our school in WA was closed due to a possible outbreak. But no one who went to CA got sick, and now everyone is saying you don't have to worry about it any more than the regular flu. So just have fun and enjoy your time at disney. But carry hand sanitizer! Lol. I went through six travel sized bottles on my week long trip, I was paranoid about it lol.

Ummmmmmmmmmm nope. I live in CA and I'm not worried about it at all. We've been a lot this year and didn't worry then either. :)

We have been 3 times since the media hype started. We took a large bottle of sanitizer and refilled our own small bottles. Once we got to DL we kind of forgot about the whole flu thing :) other than sanitizing; we are a little germaphobic anyways LOL

Just a reminder: most gel hand sanitizers are antibacterial. The Swine Flu and any flu or even the common cold are viral so hand sanitizers won't help because they don't kill viruses...

To answer the OP's question...no, we live in CA and travel to DL 4 to 5 times a year and don't worry about getting H1N1 :)

H1N1 is pretty much everywhere on Earth. Fortunately most people that get H1N1 experience the usual flu symptoms, then recover the same as from most seasonal flus. Best protection is to practice good personal hygiene by washing your hands with soap and water periodically throughout the day, especially before eating.

I guess I should of been clearer :) we use microdine my oncologist introduced it to us after I had a bone marrow transplant. No alcohol and is lotion based. I think it's what they use in the hospital. Anyways.... My doc says it kills as well as soap and water :)
ETA: there is another one too byotrol? (sp) Something like that is the name, works the same supposed to kill MRSA too. you can get them from medical supply and I have seen them at wholesale food supply co. When I used to manage a restaurant :)

We were over there in May/June .didnt give it a second thought ..its like flying i suppose if u stop goin places for incidents etc or expecting it .. youd never go anywhere

besides .. we went to the doctors before we flew there and he gave us some oinkment :lmao:

I haven't given it much thought since the first uproar about it. From what I've heard, this strain is much like any other flu in that sometimes people die. That happens with all flu. This one is supposedly spread easier so I think it is always good be careful. I am amazed that people will touch all the railings while standing in line and then eat something without washing their hands. Also keep your hands away from your face. Wash your hands before you leave the bathroom and don't touch the door handle on the way out. (Disney doesn't have doors, but other places).

With kids it is harder to keep them from putting their hands in their mouths, but by age three or four you can start teaching them. As a pre-k teacher, I teach the kids to sneeze or cough into their elbows. Grownups can set the example in this. It keeps people from spraying germs into their hands and then touching something.

I understand the logic behind this "new" cough/sneeze into the arm containment method, but I find it pretty disgusting, right up there with using and reusing a cloth handkerchief. Unless a person carries around a dozen long-sleeve shirts so that they can be tossed in the trash after coughing or sneezing into the sleeves, I continue to recommend covering a cough or sneeze with a handheld disposable tissue.

But then you still have the fresh germs in your hand and the point is to not have them on your hand and then go touch things that other people will touch. I'm not saying blow your nose on your sleeve! :scared1: If you must blow your nose, then by all means- use a kleenex! :rotfl: It isn't new. We did this when I first started teaching pre-k 20 years ago. The ideal thing would be to wash your hands after, but if you can't, I'd rather someone did this.

I put "new" in quotes, because it isn't new, but just getting new publicity. You are not alone, the agency where I work strongly advocates the cough/sneeze into your arm method. However, I still think the idea is disgusting.:sad2: My view is that when you cough or sneeze into your hands, even without a tissue, you can realistically wash your hands at the nearest restroom. However, your shirt sleeve is worn the whole day allowing for transfer of viruses and germs for hours through direct contact during casual bumping and rubbing against others on elevators, crowded buses, aircraft boardings, etc.

When this thing first started, I might have been concerned; since, it was not in my area yet. At this point, it is everywhere! You can get it at Walmart, Target, or the grocery store. So to put it this way...would you rather go to Disneyland or Walmart. I know what my answer is!!! I have a trip planned for Sept. They are projecting for this flu to flair up as kids go back to school in Sept. Am I going to cancel my trip in Sept. because that is when everyone is supposed to get it??? NO WAY!!! Go to Disneyland, wash your hands, and have fun. Don't worry because if you are going to get, you will get it anywhere!
