Hi All!!!
This is our first post:) We signed up for DVC on the day after Thanksgiving and expect that our closing took place yesterday.

We are trying to plan our vacations for the next several years and wondered about the number of points normally used when doing an exchange through MS for a WP offering via II. I have heard anything from 55 points for a week, all the way up to 250. Can any of you helpful folks reply here with where you went and the number of points used.

I haven't called MS about this yet as I want to wait until we get confirmation that our closing is a done deal.

We are trying to see if we can work in a trip to Disney AND a week at a resort close to our home in the Smokey Mountains in the same year.....boy that would be heaven!!. We own 210 points.

I have been lurking here for several weeks and have learned a wealth of info!! Thanks!!!

I think that DISNEY negotiates points necessary for I.I. exchanges on a case by case basis. For example, if you are looking at a 2-bedroom exchange, you'll probably have to surrender enough points for a 2-bedroom villa at your home resort; however, DVC will try to provide the lowest acceptable seasonal exchange at WDW to minimize your point outlay.

We stayed for 1 week this summer in a 2-bedroom at the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont; I think that we "paid" about 230 points.

CONGRATULATIONS........AND WELCOME HOME

I can't help you with the exchanges, just wanted to Welcome you Home AND Welcome to THE DIS!

EROS said it pretty well. We were told to leave our exchange request as open ended as we could. We asked for any time the first 6 months of a given year in any accomodation on one of 2 islands in Hawaii. We got a 1 bedroom on the big Island of Hawaii, and it only cost us 160 points for the week. That was the cost of a 1 bedroom in the lowest points season. MS will give you an idea of what the cost might be when they start looking at the location you request.

As a general rule, assume the same number of points as the unit size you are requesting at OKW for either Adventure or Dream season. In some cases it might be choice or magic season but never premier. It is not your home resort but the cheapest unit of all the DVC resorts that fits the bill that DVC will trade for you and other than HH off season, that will be OKW. If it's red time but not bright red, it's usually adventure. Examples would be MX, FL, Caribbean in summer. If it's bright red, it's usually Dream season. Examples would be HI (year around except for about 3 weeks in Oct), warm areas Christmas to Easter, Ski season.

You must give up the same number of points as the unit you request. They may offer you a larger unit and in some cases do so at the lower points costs. You cannot ask for a smaller unit than the smallest at a resort you are trying to get. Example, you can not search for a 1 BR unit at a resort than only has 2 BR units without lockoff's.

On a side note, I saw that the DVC resorts were listed differently in the new II book. In the past, they were listed as

OKW as studios 2/2 (sleep 2 privately, sleep 2 total), 1 BR 4/4 and 2 BR 6/6. WLV as studios 2/4, 1 BR 4/4 and 2 BR 6/6.
BW as studios 2/2, 1 BR 4/4 and 2 BR 6/8.
VB as studios 2/2, 1 BR 4/4 and 2 BR 6/6.
HH as studios 2/2, 1 BR 2/4 and 2 BR 6/6.

The new book has them listed as
OKW as studio's 2/2, studio's 2/4, 1 BR 4/4, 2 BR 6/6 and 2 BR 6/8.
WL studio's 2/4, 1 BR 4/4, 2 BR 6/6 and 2 BR 6/8.
BW as studio's 2/2, studio's 2/4, 1 BR 4/4, and 2 BR 6/8.
VB studio's 2/2, studio's 2/4, 1 BR 4/4, 2 BR 6/6 and 2 BR 6/8.
HH as studio's 2/2, studio's 2/4, 1 BR 2/4, 1 BR 4/4, 2 BR 6/6 and 2 BR 6/8.

I've always assumed that II was ignoring the small pullout in the Bedroom and had BW and OKW mixed up. Overall, I think this was their attempt to correct the sitation, but it fell short.
