Grrrrr, my DH & DS's WOW account was hacked yesterday and thieves stole the gold in his account worth over $60 US. Then last night we changed the password. Then today again they changed the password to get in and took whatever my poor kid earned last night. Now DH has an I-phone app Sattle Net Mobile Authenticator. Sooooooo ticked right now.

I just got hacked about a month ago myself..

First thing, run a FULL virus scan, and also a Malware scan just to make sure. I was lucky, I got EVERYTHING back from Blizzard within 24hrs. My guild also got the stuff back. Make sure you have it reported.

I now have an authenticator. I havent had any issues since getting it attached to my account

I got hacked years ago. I felt really violated. They changed my password so when I got up and I couldn't log on, I logged on my husband's computer and saw my character running around Ironforge, then go to the vendor and sell everything. This was long before the guild bank was implemented so I had all the guild supplies on me as well, they probably took about $600 worth of gold off that account. Sorry you are going through that, it really is creepy.

My son was hacked last month :(

What's an authenticator?

A $6 device that randomly generates a 6 digit # that is required on login. The # changes every 20-30 secs, therefore making it more difficult to hack into the account. There is a FREE version if you have a Droid or Iphone/ITouch. I HIGHLY recomend you pick one up for ANY Battlenet accounts to prevent hacking..

I agree with a PP...I felt violated. I put a LOT of time into my WoW accounts, and to see my toons running naked or even worse, deleted...:scared1:

My personal opinion? Someone might be hacking Blizz itself too , because I know a LOT of ppl who have had bought authenticators to just have their accounts hacked afterwords.. But of course Blizz would NEVER admit this..:rolleyes1

I play WoW , but I have a love/hate relationship with Blizz itself. You think with the oodles of dough they get from us millions of members they would give away authenticators for free since it's not OUR fault hackers are having an easy time breaking in to accounts.. but I digress lol

Run a virus scan NOW. Run more then a single program to do this, just in case one has not been updated. I suggest AVG and Avast!

The fact that you changed your passwords and they still got on says to me "keylogger".

Ohhh, and give your dh and ds my condolences of getting hacked right before the new raid comes out tomorrow .. I would be tossing my laptop out the window if that happened to me . :rotfl2:

Tell em to get ahold of a gm, they should be able to get their gear and items back soon.

good point. I actually just wiped my entire system when my computer was hacked.

I was getting e-mails from Blizzard saying my account had been compromised, but I do not have an accout with them. I gather that someone was phishing and trying to get me to log into my non-existent account via the link in the e-mail (?)

Yup, that is a fishing scam like the ones for ebay. In the game itself those are becoming more prolific because hackers (I have gotten like 5 of those kind lately) will send you a personal message in game stating something like "Your account is being shut down for blah blah blah reason...so please go to this site to clear this up". It's basically a keyloging site. Also, I NEVER click on links in forums like the official warcraft one or on other sites because those are known to do that too.

We got hacked through a download from a threat meter. Now, we use AVG virus scan and SuperAntiSpyware and authenticators. We had gotten a keylogger and that is how we got it. Sucks, but Bliz did give us everything back except for the gems in our gear. It is such a pain.... Never, ever answer an email or someone asking you to log in. Bliz will never ask you to.

My DH got hacked a couple months ago. They didn't steal anything but made a level 1 character and ran it up to Stormwind to spam 'Buy Gold' messages. He had been getting phishing emails for awhile before that but never clicked on one. He now uses an authenticator.

I've heard of this happening to so many wow friends and guildies lately. I'm seriously thinking about ordering an authentictor for myself and DH.

I have an authenticator, and I've never been hacked.

However, one of my friends doesn't have one and was just hacked recently, really badly. While he was locked out of his account, his characters emptied our guild bank, sold and disenchanted all his gear, spammed gold seller/RMT sales ads in game, and then were transferred to another server. Basically, a hacker stole his account through a keylogger, and resold it to someone else on another server. Its a huge mess.

Blizzard contacted him (he had to literally fax copies of paperwork to Blizz to prove he owned his account, and had to contact them back and forth over a period of about a week), and yes they will restore his account. The kicker is that account management told him it will probably be an estimated TWO WEEKS before all his characters and stolen items are restored. He has now ordered an authenticator and is waiting for his account to be unlocked to install it. He also told me that he wish he would have bought an authenticator earlier instead of being cheap and not spending $7 for an authenticator, because being locked out of his account for 3 weeks was not worth saving $7.

Sounds like a keylogger to me also....we have been hacked a number of times thanks to gaming... Just love when they get into notepad and come on and start chatting with you......or send you porn.....:scared1:

My son was taught what to do when this happens by a white hacker(the ones that get rid of the black hackers)....and we can counter attack.....he also is taking classes on C++ programming so this helps also.
The best thing to do is whip your comp clean...either do it yourself or pay someone to do it. Make sure they first back up your files and pictures first.....

sorry to hear this happened...it is really frustrating. But if they keep getting your password than they are keylogging everything you type in....also if you do OL banking or pay bills online...never use the same comp that your son uses for gaming...because the keylogger will get those passwords also. Also always good to always change passwords weekly.:thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for your responses. I didn't realize being hacked on WOW was so common. We didn't have any protective software on the computer because it's a new MAC. When DH first called me he suspected a keylogger too, but dismissed his own instincts because we have a MAC. Thanks to all you guys saying it was the most likely hacking tool involved DH bought a Keylogger finder called "Little Snitch". BOY would I LOVE it to pick up on someone but DH says it won't register until someone checks in on it, whatever that means (he's IT security & I'm techie illiterate so I don't ask too many questions, he gets exhausted trying to explain LOL). While I know MAC's aren't usually targeted by hackers i can't help but wonder if the poor economy and all the big money involved in WOW isn't more than enough reason to motivate hackers towards being more creative.

I have to say I am worried about a Keylogger now because I used the MAC to look at our banking info. But, come to think of it all but one of my passwords is already in the computers memory, as in I hit the first letter and the rest is filled in automatically. Do key-loggers record the memory entries too or just the ones we manually input key by key? Uggh, I feel so vulnerable at the moment.

Keyloggers record what you type in as you type it....they log your key activity. I am also surprised that you got hacked with your MAC...although hacking is different than a virus so maybe that is why:confused3

I would not take any chances....I would get someone that can clean your comp up....because even with the software you have there are ways around it.....it is believe it or not very easy to hack and the gamers are notorious for it.

Dont change any passwords at this point to your OL accounts because if they dont have that info yet...as soon as you type it in they will. I would not use that comp until you take care of it. If you are not sure where to take it just call Best buy for the Geek squad...they can take care of it in no time at all :thumbsup2 Dont forget....pay to have your files backed up.

I have been looking around and came across a post on another board I visit about this same issue. For a non-WoW board, there seems to be a large number of people who have been hacked. This even includes people who don't have active accounts (maybe I should check mine). There are also reports of a large number of emails from "blizzard" being sent out that are fake.

Now, nothing official has been said by Blizzard regarding all of this. I would still check your systems for a keylogger to be on the safe side. Macs are not perfect and can be hacked just fine. However, make sure you get together all of your game keys and account information in case Blizzard needs it to verify it is your account.
