World of Color Preferred Viewing Dining Reviews: Ariel's vs. WCT!

Thanks. My 11 year old will only do pasta with butter! Ugh! We may just switch to the picnic option and stop worrying about it

The herb chicken breast appeared to have pasta with butter or something (at least to my untrained eye) and my friend who prefers bland food thought the chicken was pretty good. This is assuming they haven't changed it ALREADY (the "steak" and desserts people got on Saturday bore only a passing resemblance to what I had).

Thanks, we decided to just take our chances and stick with WCT. We may do picnics a different day.

OK, so it has been a week since our dud of a meal at Wine Country Trattoria and first viewing of World of Color. We went back and tried again this Saturday, but this time we ate at Ariel's. We also noticed some changes to the WOC viewing process and tweaks to the areas, so I'll give the full report.

When we called last week to reserve the WOC package at Ariel's, the earliest time we could get was 5:20 and only if we ate on the patio. (They will tell you the patio is covered, but a good deal of it is in the sun at that hour.) We were also told that a gratuity would be automatically added to the bill. Neither of these things happened.

When we checked in at 5:15, we were asked whether we wanted to sit inside or outside (inside!) and given a pager. Five minutes later they took us downstairs.

At dinner, Ariel's only serves World of Color packages, so you don't have to ask for the special menu. We also didn't get the idea that we might not have show tickets waiting for us at the end of our meal (something the dining CMs were originally scaring all of us with when packages first went on sale).

DSC07373.jpg

Our biggest complaint about doing the WOC package at Wine Country Trattoria besides the lackluster food was the reduced menu that cost more. Ariel's is the exact opposite—if there are only 2 of you, they actually give you too much food! We got the same size tower o' appetizers and trough o' desserts they were giving parties of 4 people!

Our service was harried and slow, with long gaps. For some reason all of our waitress' other tables were on the opposite side of the restaurant. If we hadn't been in a hurry to go not line up for the show, I would have been pretty grumpy about the timing of the dishes. We started with bread and no drinks for about 5 more minutes. Then our entrees were delivered about 90 seconds after the ginormous Tower o' Appetizers showed up, yet they were already cold. :confused3 At the end we had to wait 10 minutes to get our credit card and final bill back.

However, I would still pick Ariel's over Wine Country Trattoria any day. The food is Olive Garden quality, but at least there's more food, a better variety to choose from, and what you get is pretty much what you expect. Plus you pay about 10 bucks less than you would at WCT when all is said and done. There's something about WCT's overreaching and under-delivering that just rubs me the wrong way!

For those who've wondered whether one can dine on the patio at Ariel's and watch the first show, the answer from Disney is no: The patio is closed at 7:30 and all meals until the last service (8:30pm) are inside. In practice, we did see diners on the patio right up until the first show started (and then we just didn't care anymore). However, they were way at the back (probably to avoid the spray), and their viewing angle on the show is off to the side and interrupted by the roof line:

It's too bad they couldn't make this work when they shoe-horned the show into the lagoon. Originally they'd talked about doing dining packages on Ariel's patio, which would have been fabulous.

On our way out, we checked out the bar upstairs. At 8pm they start charging a $10 cover with a 1-drink minimum (suggested) for those who want to watch the show from the bar. Here's the viewing angle:

After dinner, DH went to ride Mickey's Fun Wheel to get some arial shots of Paradise Park for me, and I went over to the area where everyone was pretending not to be in line for the show. I sussed out where the entrances were for each of the different colors. They were slightly different—now they have a dedicated entrance just for Preferred Dining Package holders instead of lumping them in with Blue FASTPASS holders.

The CMs kept shouting "Folks, we are not lining up for the show yet! Come back in an hour!" Well, this was at 6:30pm, and at 7:03pm, they let us in. So don't listen to 'em!

Here's all of us pretending not to line up after the barricades were installed, around 6:60pm. There were a lot more of us than last week.

DSC07427.jpg

At 7:00pm, they made a small gap in the barricades and the crowd surged forward. I was first to the Preferred Dining Entrance! The area was delineated differently this time—the stairs we'd stood on last time were no longer part of Preferred Dining and now go to Blue FPs. The big circular area and the whole area in front up to the fence is for Preferred Dining. I made a beeline to the fence.

View from front of Preferred Dining section:

Last week this had been referred to as a "wet" zone, so we brought our ponchos. Maybe it was the wind, but we got no wetter than we had last week.

Another difference: The very front center section, in the splash zone, is now YELLOW FP, not Blue. The Blue Section is still a good view, but not dead center. For some reason, they didn't let people in the Yellow section in until 15 or 20 minutes later, and it never really filled up til right near show time.

We liked our view from this area MUCH better than last time. Although you had to turn your head a little bit to take in what was going on in either end, the view in front was centered and you could see all the effects on the water. I can tell why they removed the section we were in last time from the Preferred Viewing area.

During the pre-show, Mike Wazowski ended up stationed right in front of us, and I nearly got clocked every time he swung his arms!

Again, I won't spoil the show for ya, but here's one shot to show you our view:

Thanks lurkyloo for the great pictures! We're planning on going in July and I was still kind of confused about where to go but now it all makes sense (assuming they don't completely change everything by then).

That was incredibly comprehensive! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your two different experiences. I especially appreciate the colorized photo of the viewing area you put together. That's the first time the "blue area" vs. "yellow area" vs. "blue area on the steps" vs. "preferred viewing" all started to make sense for me.

Great review & pictures - thank you! We have never been to DLR so it has been hard for me to envision DCA. Your pictures helped clarify things immensely! Hopefully they don't change everything around again before we get there!

I have to thank you also, Lurkyloo! It was good to see where the preferred section goes to (unless they change it). Was the preferred area full behind you or did it seem to have some room?

Up in the blue section by the top I noticed some sort of arch going over the walkway. I sure hope they don't think they are going to grow a bunch of plants over it. That will make a whole section there unusable for the show. Has anyone see what that is up close? :confused3

I've read repeated reports that those metal things are trellises and I think they are growing vines/etc. on it. The idea appears to be that it makes Paradise Park prettier (which it probably does)...but it's certainly a problem for anyone dead behind it. Still, Fantasmic! probably has more obstructions around the whole viewing area and I believe they pack people in tighter for it, but it still works out OK. :confused3

Here's a fuzzy picture of the one on the other side. It's during the last ELP parade and they were testing the WOC grids. I had the same thought.

It would not be good to be under that with plants on it. This is taken from the top yellow section next to the center stairs facing right.

Thank you for the review! Your meal was almost COMPLETELY different from mine on Friday, 6/11--even though we both got the New York whatever it is (but they called it a New York Strip Loin then) Only the salad matched up.

A great viewing area is anywhere directly behind the walkway ropes on the right side of your picture facing the Fun Wheel, more or less where those two CMs (?) are standing, only on the park side of the ropes. You have one full "open" side as you go (so you don't feel squished) and it's a great view provided you can see over the wall (almost any adult would, and I reckon any kid who can ride Indy). We were able to see part of the surface of the water, even. I would call it a damp zone as it feels like you get rained on once and misted on a few times, but I was OK with just a jacket. The view was really very, very good though!

I would do the first showing of WoC if buying a dining package just to see Carnivale of Color--it's not that great, but if you're already psyched for the show it's pretty fun, and hey, if you're paying for a reserved spot, you might as well make the most of it!

I did eat at Ariel's Grotto on Saturday (princess lunch) and I would recommend that food as slightly better (and much more ample) than Wine Country Trattoria's...even before reading this review/seeing the negative changes made to the meal. :confused3

We have our resv for the 1st of July at 5:4o pm, and if this Is the New york I will be very happy with that:cool1:

I would assume you are talking about these trellises down in the blue section.

Thanks so much ~ we have reservations at both WCT & Ariel's for 7/3 ~ we'll go with Ariel's - we'll actually eat twice there that day, an early lunch *11:30am and then our 5:something dinner ~ aw well, we'll make the best of it.

We ate at WCT for WoC last week, and our food was wonderful. My DH's steak was perfectly cooked and tender, and my lamb was delicious. Our service was excellent. We sat upstairs on the balcony and watched the Pixar Parade go by as we were finishing dessert (@ 5:20 pm). I'm sorry to hear some have not had great meals there, but by last week it seemed like they had things ironed out.

I'll be there Thursday at Ariels, we also have ressies on July 7th for both, so if this isn't enough, we'll be back in July! But I'll have to cancel at least one...we'll see how the first one goes and I'll see if we NEED to go back in July or can wait until September when my parents come around.

It was great 'bumping' into you two again last night...

I loved the review for your 2nd viewing. Our service at AG was also less than stellar, but the food (while I agree to be Olive Garden quality) was leaps & bounds above WCT. Your appetizer tray for 2 was definitely just as loaded as ours was for a table of 4 - while you went for the seafood & meat option, we did the veggies & cheese. The only real differences were: 1) the prosciutto on yours was cheese for ours, and 2) the 2nd tray with the seafood was grilled veggies on ours. Also, our dessert tray for 4 had the same amount as yours for 2 except for the ganache triangles, ours didn't have that at all and they weren't replaced by something different. Honestly, I would have never noticed they were missing until I saw your pic and then was like "Hey! We got jipped!" lol

I hope we bump into you guys again sometime soon in the parks. :cutie:

Thanks for the great update on your second dining WoC viewing! Very much appreciate all the efforts!

 That's the trick. One thing that gives me hope is that the colors assigned to the sections have been the same since the beginning. But I can see how they will need to keep tweaking things until everything runs Disney-smoothly.

Yeah, we were surprised to see how much more front-row real estate the yellow section got than the blue. We kept reading that Blue was the best area. Then again, it all depends on what kind of view you prefer.

Fingers crossed! And at least if they do change things, it'll probably be to improve them.

It was pretty full by showtime but didn't start to fill up until around 8pm.

That will make a whole section there unusable for the show. Has anyone see what that is up close?

Although they are training plants on the trellis, I'm not sure the intention is to have them fill the gaps at the top of it—there isn't netting or anything over the top. They may just want to cover the poles with plants...

:cutie: You didn't miss much on the ganache triangles—they had the same vaguely gooey chocolate flavor as the "molten" cakes.

It's definitely going to take a lot of stellar reviews of WCT to get me to go back. I think I'd rather do the picnic thing now that I hear they give you yellow or blue FASTPASSes.

Thanks for the great update on your second dining WoC viewing! Very much appreciate all the efforts!

Hope you get a chance to come down and see it this summer!

Thank you for these reviews. Throughly enjoyed reading them. We probably won't get to visit Disneyland and see WOC for another year or so, but we're really enjoying all this coverage. :upsidedow

WOW! What a great report of the meals and such amazing pictures!! Thank you so much! I will definitely be studying this thread once my trip gets closer!
