World of Color on a fall weekday

I'm looking at the calendar for the days I'll be at Disneyland (Oct 2- 5) and see there is a World of Color show on the day I arrive. That day is a Thursday. I've heard good things about World of Color and it was not at DCA when I last visited the parks. However, everything I've read is suggesting fast passes for the show, and the friend I'm meeting there won't be arriving into the park until the afternoon, so I cannot get fast passes for both of us. How concerned should I be? I wonder if they'll have that much going on during that day, or if either just showing up or getting a fast pass when she gets there will suffice. I'd like to reserve Saturday for Fantasmic and/or fireworks at DL.

It is the Thursday before the start of Gay Days weekend (10/3-5). I don't know if very many participants arrive early, but I do think that might impact crowds to some degree on Thursday. Given that WoC is the only nighttime entertainment on Thursday (no fireworks or Fantasmic), I would expect that it'll be popular. I would personally get a FP if you can because every little edge helps with WoC. Either that, or I would consider getting the dining package (not sure when the last seating is and whether your friend would make it or not).

To me, the hard part with WoC is that you need to be able to see the surface of the water. I don't use the word "need" very often to describe something, but, to me, it applies for WoC. The first time I saw WoC, I had a FP, got there about 45 minutes early and couldn't see over the people ahead of me (I'm on the shorter side). Now for fireworks that isn't really as much a problem because the show is above everyone. WoC, on the other hand, takes place half above and half below. So, iff you can't see the water surface, you'll miss half of the show! At that point it just becomes water cannon bursts and mist screen projects. So, either you need to commit enough time to get a front row spot (or at least a spot where you can see down to the water surface) or it's not really worth going to see the show.

PP is correct that Gay Days might affect the crowd size. When we got there on Thursday, we often went to WOC that night, because Friday and Saturday we had other plans.

You could always get FP via the dining package. Depending on what time your friend arrives in the afternoon, you could even do a late lunch if you want to save a little. (That's what we're doing for our upcoming trip, where DFs partner is joining us mid-trip.)

Also, to clarify something the PP said: It's definitely a better show if you can see the water, but there are lots of levels with railings, and places with steps you can stand on. Even if you don't get an unobstructed view of the water, it's still a very good show. Don't panic that you won't be able to enjoy the it if you're not in the very first row.

Hillberry, you might want to check out the WoC SuperThread to get a sense of the viewing areas. While there are terraces and stairs, much of them are in the FP viewing areas. While you may not need to be in the front row, I do think you lose a lot of the magic of the show if you cannot see the water's surface. If you're super tall, this is less of an issue because you can just see over the people in front of you. If you're on the shorter side, you'll need to plan accordingly so you can get to a good viewing location.
