Working on Weight Loss and getting Lean!

Good morning Lean Ladies! It's Friday. I am sick! I had a brief respite from it yesterday, except the cough, but I wake up this morning with full blown cold symptoms, sore throat, cough, terrible headache....NOT the way to start this soon-to-be snowy weekend......

Yesterday, I didn't feel great, but good enough to get my LR in.....I am glad it got done yesterday, because I couldn't do it today!

Jackie: I definitely recommend the Wii fit.....we love ours! And, surprizingly, it really does work you out! I couldn't stop the obsticle course until I 'won' and I was sweaty and out of breathe by the time I was done! The only part I don't like is when my little Mii blows up with my weight! I hate that!

Jeanne: How did the Wii workout go? I hope you like it! I still think it's better to be alone while figuring it out....very embarressing to have to have a 11 and 13 year old helping old mom out, and laughing at me!

Debra: Are you ready for snow??? I am not.....I am sick of winter in PA! :sad2: Was the other gym any cheaper/ or better amentities? I am interested in knowing!

Cindy: Did the doctor give you any ideas in what the stomach issues could be? I am sorry it has lead to weight gain.....but, you shouldn't worry about that now.....get the problem resolved and you will be back at it in no time!

Mandac: So, where is your 1/2 coming up? I hope that it goes well.....it's a hard time of year to train, I know! I have one coming up in March!

AFM: So, we'll see what gets done today.....I would like to get a few miles in, and of course the standing date with P90X! I will let you know how it goes1

Beth

It's been one of those days -- but I did do my incline walking this AM, and I'm sticking to my points! If I count yoga on Tuesday (and I think I can), that's actually a 4 day "streak". Now that I'm excited about this idea, I want to see how many days I can go with a workout.

I'm just now getting to dinner, so I'm going to eat and relax. Sleep is near, I just can't stay up even when I don't have to get up!

Beth -- I am so sorry you are not feeling well...hopefully by now you are on the mend.

Jeanne and Jackie -- I have a wii but just have not been using it. Maybe tomorrow I will get on and set up the wii fit plus!

Vicki -- I for one can't wait to hear what the nutritionist had to say!

Manda -- 4:30 is my only option if I want to be done in time to get ready for work. I guess I need to get faster!

Hi to Debra, Cindy, Corinna, and Connie!

Tomorrow I'll try to post our Super Bowl menu. We shopped tonight and I think it's actually not too bad...

Maria :upsidedow

Good morning Lean Ladies! Wow, we got alot of snow here.....I am not looking forward to digging out!

Maria: Yeah, I love the idea of streaking.....with my clothes on! It's a great motivator. It's also a good way to get different stuff done. Sometimes I would dig out a tape or something to get a workout in when time was running short. I have a streak started on Jan 1st! I did it last year until the day I had to take off after I fell running. It was pretty long! About 10 months...... I will try for the whole year this year.....but I have a marathon in June......don't know how that will work!

Good job starting your own streak!

AFM: My cold has gotten pretty bad. The cough is the worst I have had in a long time. Looking back though, I have been very healthy for several years. I haven't had issues like this for a very long time, and it used to be several times every winter. I do feel pretty bad, and will have to get outside anyway to dig out from a foot of snow (and still snowing!)

I did get arms/shoulders done with Tony yesterday. I have to say I do feel stronger, more coordinated, and able to do more than the first time I did it. I am sore this morning, but not as bad as last week. I also got 3 miles done, which wasn't enough but more than I felt like doing.

I don't know if I can run today......my chest is heavy and I am coughing too much. I will have to see how well the cough medicine works!

Beth

Hi guys,

Just a quick drive-by. I am waiting on that book, still. I hate waiting!

Beth, get well. Jeanne, wish I could come play with you and Jackie on the WII. Maria, you are doing great! Debra, you are also doing great. I wish I had some of your energy! Manda, hang in girlfriend. You are doing fine! Superbowl food? i HOPE I don't have to mess with it!

AFM - I'm sick  and I am going back to bed. :grouphug: Oh wait, erace that hug...don't want to spread this, just in case!!! It's a sore throat, sinus thing! see ya!

Connie

Go, go, go Lean Ones!

I just did my 6M, and it felt pretty good. I feel so much better, I decided to put on real clothes to go to Target instead of my usual workout pants and sweatshirt -- or that could be an effect of watching too much "What Not to Wear" -- either way I'm going to look put together when I leave my house later! :thumbsup2

Connie and Beth -- I am so sorry you are both not feeling well. Bed, yoga, chicken soup -- do whatever you need to start to feel better :grouphug: (wearing my protective shield to keep the germs at bay)

Beth -- What an awesome streak you have! :worship: I think I'm going to say since I started Feb. 2nd, I saw my shadow and realized I had to get moving! :rotfl2:

We promised ds we'd take him to Target today to get an ipod touch. He's using his Christmas and birthday money and gift cards to purchase it. We told him we already bought him a nano, so if that wasn't meeting his needs he'd have to buy the next one. Did I mention we actually bought him 2 nanos? The first one stopped working after about a year, so the one he has isn't even a year old.

We're going to be entertained by a classic movie tonight -- I got "The Birds" from Netflix. We're interested to see if ds appreciates Hitchcock. We think he might.

Debra --Very interested to hear what you think about "The Lightning Thief". I'm prejudiced to like it since I believe Kevin McKidd is in it. DS is chomping at the bit to go.

Ok, so for the Super Bowl -- we are having a shrimp ring, veggie platter, nachos (tostitos scoops with salsa and low-fat cheese), veggie pizza, and a big decorated cookie. I like to think it's festive, but not a dieters nightmare. :rotfl:

No snow here, just a few flurries this morning. I'm sorry for everyone who got swamped! :cold:

I'd better get moving, or my fellas will leave without me :surfweb:

Maria :upsidedow

Good morning, Lean Meanies! I'm jumping in - I feel like I know some of you pretty well and some of you not well at all, but some people keep including me in their list of "hellos" so I figure I should at least say hello back!

Hello!

Maria- I think your super bowl menu is a good mix of healthy and fun. We are not really into the football thing at my house, so I don't have any special food planned for today, I'm afraid. I do love a veggie tray, though, I must admit!

Hope your DS enjoys The Birds!

Beth- your streak sounds great! I am glad for your sake that it is the clothed variety. This is not a comfortable time of year for the other kind of streaking, at least in the North!

Jeanne I read your post about the Wii during a slow part in the play last night (sounds rude, but nobody can see me up in the catwalk anyhow) and was cracking up quietly to myself. Don't worry about the Wiifit Age at all. For me, it is almost entirely dependent on which test the little dude decides to administer. One day I'll be 27, the next day I'll be 68! The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Vicky- two pounds is big! Congratulations! Interesting about the tea, as well. I had no idea about the green tea methods! I am most guilty of just plopping the bag in straight out of the microwave. I'm sure the tea lady would sudder!

Here's Me: Still gearing up for the Princess Half, but I feel like my training plan has never really gelled. It feels more like filler, and the days end up all wrong all the time. Today should probably have been my long run, but a friend wanted to go to the YMCA with me this morning, so we went and did a spin class followed by body pump. Nothing to be ashamed of in the workout department, but where does that leave me for my long run? I have no clue. :sad2: It's going to be OK, though. I'm pretty sure.

Today, I reclaimed my graduation dress. The one I wore to my college graduation in 1996, that is. It's still wearable and it does seem to fit again. Maybe a little snug for sitting down. I'm not sure that that will ever go away. Does anyone else have issues with extra skin/flesh in the abdominal area? I have really solid abs underneath, but man, there's a lot still covering them. I wish there were a skin toning workout...:rolleyes1

Hi Leanies! Hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend!

Corinna - Not extra skin but I still have a little bit of pudge that won't seem to move. Are you going to do your LR tomorrow?

Maria - I also love my workout clothes more than real clothes. I guess it's bad when my after workout gear looks better than my office clothes. Nice mix of food for the Superbowl party. I'm glad you have healthy stuff there :) Often I'll go to a friend's house and all they have are sweets and chips :( Have a fun shopping trip!

Connie - and pixiedust: hope you feel better soon!

Beth - Remember to take things easy if you're not feeling well. pixiedust: Hope your cold/cough doesn't stick around too much longer.

Cindy - How's the new schedule for your meds working out?

Jeanne - DF also falls into the obese category on the Wii Fit. He hates that goofy music that the game plays after he weighs in. My only complaint about the Wii Fit is that you have to weigh in everyday to get that stamp.

Debra/Manda - :wave2:

AFM - I woke up this morning with a nasty headache. I took a Tylenol and went back to sleep hoping it would go away so I could get in my 13 miler. I'd much rather do a LR on Saturday than on Sunday. It wasn't going away so by noon, I decided to run the 5 miler instead.

Went to the nutritionist on Thursday evening and I think it went pretty well. She liked what I was eating but said I still needed to get in more veggies and add in some flax seed or fish oil. She said I needed to eat more protein before my LRs - eggs or cottage cheese. So I'm trying out low fat cottage cheese with a little bit of jam mixed in. After cutting out most sugars, the jam was incredibly sweet! She also suggested I switch from instant oatmeal to minute oats - I can't remember why, I'll have to ask her again. Oh and she also said that I shouldn't expect to lose any weight while training for the full but I sort of already knew that :upsidedow

Have a great weekend everyone! :wave2:

Maria - Laundry? Who needs to do laundry? I'm trying the technique of if you leave it long enough, surely it will do itself. I'll let you know if I have any success. :lmao: I'm with Beth - I don't understand how we're supposed to work out, avoid fast food, eat healthy, and still do things like housework. Oh yeah, and get 8 hours of sleep each night. There just aren't enough hours in the day. And I think it's too much "What Not to Wear," by the way. Clinton and Stacy would never let you go to Target in workout clothes. Me, well, I haven't taken a shower since my run this morning. I did put on a sweatshirt and jeans to go get lunch with DD and DH, but that was all!

Cindy - Wonderful that you found a doctor who will listen to you. Hope the change in medicine scheduling will help some. The 10lbs is a bummer, but you can't feel too bad about it, and it will come off once you get everything settled.

Manda - Great job on getting the 4 miles done. I think you did wonderful only eating 1 brownie. I have to keep them out of the house, because once the cookies or brownies come in the door, I eat them nonstop until they're gone. Unfortunately, DH is on a cookie binge right now and keeps buying them. I was saved this weekend when DD came home from school and helped him eat the most recent box. I passed 3 different groups of Girl Scouts today selling cookies - the last ones looked offended when I said I didn't want any this year!

Beth - It's okay to skip the workout if the cold has settled in your chest. I know you know that, but sometimes it helps to hear it! I do think my most recent cold never completely took hold because I kept running and kept everything moving, but I was prepared to put everything on hold if it settled in my chest. I hope you feel better SOON!

Connie - Hope you feel better soon too!

Corinna - It's beginning to feel a lot like 'Ohana over here... And I don't want to talk about extra skin/flesh in the abdominal area. I think it began with childbirth 19 years ago, but I'm not completely sure... :confused3 I know it's been there a really long time, and it doesn't matter what I do, it stays.

Vicky - I desperately need more veggies, and fruits too. We won't talk about the sweets.

AFM - Got out this morning and ran 10 miles. Discovered I can still run! That's a really good thing, since I've realized that it doesn't matter what I eat during the week, if I'm not running, the weight doesn't go down. I need to join the "streaking" group, and mix in some other workouts, but I'm having problems with that time thing too. Even without DD at home, I seem to not be able to get everything done. Tomorrow I absolutely have to get our taxes done, but we just found a 5K that DH is going to run (it's part of a local series that you need to run 6 out of 8 events, and he's already missed the first), so that will be a few hours out of the day. I think I may just spectate, since I have a half on Saturday. But at the very least, I'll get a lot of walking in around the race site, and maybe I'll even do a little running while DH is on the course.

On the food front, I'm trying to cut some of the sugar. It's insane how much there is in my diet, so there's a lot of room for improvement. I've been trying to eliminate the between meal snacks (I think it was RW who said if you eliminate 100 calories a day you can lose 10lbs a year), so I'm making a conscious effort to stay away from my co-worker who always has pretzels or some other snack food on her desk mid-morning. I have tried to remember to take apples for that time of day, so I can add a serving of fruit if I'm truly hungry. It's also very difficult to cover all the food groups and not overdo it on the calories!

Jackie

Sugar

Poison. Unneccessary. The primary cause for many illnesses, including cancers, heart desease, stroke, and arthritis.

In the early 1800's the average American ate: 12 pounds of sugar
1850 22 lbs
1875 41 lbs
1895 63 lbs
1915 95 lbs
1935 115 lbs
1955 119 lbs
1976 125 lbs
1990 130 - 140 lbs
1996 152 lbs

And the number continues to climb! Much of the sugar we consume is hidden. Start reading labels. You will be surprised how much sugar you are eating. Look for:

barley malt, beet sugar, brown sugar, buttered syrup, cane-juice crystals, cane sugar, caramel, carob syrup, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, date sugar, destrose, dextran, diatase, diastatic malt, ethyl maltol, fructose, fruit juice, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, glucose solids, honey, invert sugar, lactose, malt syrup, matodextrin, maltose, mannitol, molasses, raw sugar, refiner's syrup, sorbitol, sorghum syrup, sucrose, sugar, turbinado sugar, xylitol, yellow sugar, and high fructose corn syrup.

Since sugar is a preservative, more and more sugar is creeping into the processed foods we eat! And not just in the things you might expect! Check your salt box, if you aren't eating sea salt chances are you are sprinkling your food with salt and sugar! As you can see, Corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup aren't the only problems we have with sugar. It's not that it's in the food, it's that there is so much of it and in so much of everything we eat!

Our bodies and brains need sugar. But the truth is: We can get all the sugar we need eating whole grains, vegetables and legumes! We don't even have to eat fruit to get enough sugar to supply our brains and bodies!! One of the biggest hidden sugars today are in fat free foods. To make up for the fat, manufacturers are adding lots more sugar. And most of the time, you will find that the calorie count on fat free items is the same or only slightly lower than the calorie count on the full fat variety!

The longer I live, the more I think that sugar is the enemy! During the time I was doing low carb, I tried really hard to stay away from sugar. I got killed on some of these threads, as low carb is frowned upon. I believe that low carb started me off well, getting me off sugar. I cannot maintain a low carb lifestyle now, since I exercise to heavily for it to be feasible, but I still believe in it! There are many super obese Americans that it could save their lives! I am careful not to bring the subject up, since so many gave me a hard time about it. I still maintain that refined carbs and sugars are the enemy!

I always want to keep this thread positive, as many of us are on different plans.....but, Connie, you are spot on! The list of sugar is long, and it would probably behoove us all to keep it in mind! It just shouldn't be part of a healthy lifestyle!

You have to remember, that the new trend to low fat products leads you to more sugar. They have to make the products taste good, so they have to add something......no fat of course, so let's substitute it with sugar! And, we think that we are doing something healthy for ourselves! Makes me mad that we are being duped!

We must start thinking whole foods! Fruits and veggies are the areas that I have to work on.....I am good during the week, but the weekend leads me to bad eating. I have to start getting myself on board all week long!

I am not feeling well yet, but I am making myself get in to gear. It's just a cold, but it seems to be sucking the life out of me! I did P90X legs/back this morning and now eyeing my TM. I didn't get any miles in yesterday, and I feel bad about it. The 3 hours of shoveling just took it out of me....and that was the priority yesterday with a foot of snow!

The cough I am left with is the worse! My ab's hurt, not from working out, but from the cough! Yuck....can't wait to feel better!

Beth

Beth, I agree that low carb is a healthy way to go to get the sugar out, and t it is the easiest! But I think there are other ways to attack the need for carbohydrates without adding simple sugars! I have learned a lot, but I am learning more and more! Right now, I am thinking whole grains. But not the kind we find in the grocery store...I am thinking really, really whole grains. Not processed in any way, just cooked. I am looking for and looking at cookbooks that utilize the grain and not just the flour! I have had some very tasty meals that included quinoa cooked like rice pilaf!

There are all kinds of grains that I didn't even know about! Now, I look at the birdseed I put in the wild birdfeeders and think, is there a recipe for that??? I will continue to post information about simple sugars and as I learn about genuine whole grains, I will post that too!

Hey Lean Ones!

I did half an hour of free weights, and half an hour of incline walking today. I've been meaning to add the free weights, and I'm glad I got that moving. It will be easy to do while I watch BL!

Low carb is great for cleaning yourself out of sugar. I don't really do it, but I do understand it can get you started on the right track. If I'm not careful, I could easily eat a lot of "diet" food and not eat anything real. I limit the 100 cal packs to one a day, and make sure I eat whole fruit and veggies. I actually do better with an egg breakdast (1 egg and 1 egg white with peppers and onions) than I do with a 1 pt. Vitamuffin. The eggs keep me full longer, and I don't feel like I have to eat something else midmorning.

Jackie -- Clinton and Stacey would throw away my entire wardrobe, and I would happily let them! :thumbsup2

Vicki -- I think I just feel more "powerful" in my workout clothes -- these are the symbols of my strength, and my mind and body working together. :cloud9:

Corinna -- DS didn't really like "The Birds", and I hadn't ever seen it before -- I found the ending bizarre. No sense of completion. I do think Suzanne Pleshette actually got better looking as she aged...:yay: And so can I! :rotfl2: And I think you are a baby! I graduated from undergrad in 1990! Seriously, congratulations on getting back in that dress -- but you should feel free to buy a new one after all the weight you have lost! You do not have to wear a 14-year old garment! :cheer2:

Connie -- You're scaring me, but in a good way. Please post all you learn! :teacher:

Beth -- I think 3 hours of shoveling counts as a workout ;) I hear you about the weekends -- I definitely fall off track. We cook during the week and eat out Friday and Saturday. I try to make choices that are a little better each weekend, but I have a long way to go. So far I'm managing to skip fries with sandwiches, and try to get chicken with a marinara sauce instead of a cream sauce or meatballs. My big accomplishment yesterday was to not order mozzarella sticks with my hot fingers -- see what I mean about a long way to go? I know these are not good choices. Friday hits and I have been working since Sunday night to do the right thing, and I seem to lose my will to eat right. I'm just tired, and most of the time dh wants to eat at places where healthy means you can get an iceburg lettuce side salad with one cherry tomato and a carrot curl...

Cindy, Manda, Jeanne, Debra --:wave2: I hope you all aren't buried in snow! Well, I know Cindy's not, at least...she's probably out training for Boston! :cool1:

Maria :upsidedow

Connie - Yes, please continue to share what you're learning. I may not put it all to use, but knowing helps me at least feel guilty, and I promise to use SOME of what you tell me!

Maria - I wouldn't let them near my closet. I'd have nothing left, and I'm very attached to some of my sweats! But the $5000 to spend on new stuff would be nice. I do pretend sometimes when I'm shopping that I'm listening to them and try to buy things that they'd suggest, but I still end up wearing the same old stuff. Fortunately, my job doesn't require much of a work wardrobe (jeans and a sweatshirt are just fine) so I don't have a lot of motivation. When DD interviewed for her scholarship last spring, I actually had to shop for clothes to wear to the reception.

Beth
- Shoveling snow is absolutely a workout. I learned that last Sunday when I shoveled for 2 hours. It also works muscles that don't usually get used. You may not have that problem since you're doing regular intense workouts, but I hurt really, really bad for a couple of days!

On a spur of the moment decision, I ran the 5K today with DH. I haven't run a 5K in a couple of years, so it was really fun to do a small local race again. Several of our friends were doing it, and all the women got roses at the end (race name was "Run for the Roses") One of my goals for this year is to run a 5K with no walk breaks, and even though I haven't done any training toward this goal, I decided to give it a shot. I ran the first 2 miles nonstop - 10:16 and 10:18. Then I hit the hills (120 foot gain in the last mile - who designed this course anyway?). Did a 1:00 walk break and ended up doing R3/W1 for the last mile, although I had a much longer run interval at the end and really kicked it for the finish for a 32:35. Decided I was going to pass the woman in front of me, but she apparently heard me coming and decided I wasn't, so we had an all out sprint to the finish line. Never mind that we weren't even close in age so there was absolutely nothing on the line except for bragging rights! Anyway, I shaved over 1:30 off my previous 5K time, so I'm really, really happy with the race. Plus I proved that my goal to run 3.1 without walk breaks is realistic, if I can find a flatter course. Not a bad day considering it was a rest day!

Jackie

Jackie: WTG on the 5K! You did a marvelous job! And shaving off 1:30 is awesome! Aren't you glad you gave up that rest day?;)

Maria: I too, have a long way to go. I am at a super bowl party, and indulged in to many treats! Oh well, better day tomorrow!

I guess shoveling snow could count as a workout.....it was hard work, I admit! I don't usually count non-intentional exercise, like walking at work, and such, but the snow could actually count!

Beth

Hey Ladies,

I am feeling better! Hope to be on top of my game by tomorrow!

Jackie - I don't know how any of us could use all the information I am learning about sugar! But knowledge is power! And the more you know, the better it will be. There are lots of people who don't have a problem with sugar and there are lots who do. THose of us who have the problem envy those of you who don't! :goodvibes

Maria - Stacy and Clinton in my closet?? They would be asking, "Why don't you wear some of this stuff?" And I would have to say, "yea, let me put this beautiful dress on, jump in my giant 4 wheel drive pickup, and drive to Walmart!". They just wouldn't get it. :lmao: Guess I will keep my closet a secret! :upsidedow -- Maria, you might have a problem with sugar! When I got rid of sugar, (I cook from scratch, mostly) and dumped the white food, I have found that I am not as hungry as I was and way fewer calories satisfies me!

Beth - Shoveling snow IS DEFINITELY a workout! :woohoo:

Back to the game! See ya! -- Connie

Happy Monday Leanies!

Connie - There's sugar in everything!! I was looking at a box of crackers and saw there were a couple different kinds of sugar there. I'm starting to wonder if it's a little bit like salt. We're so use to eating it, people might not think their food tastes right without it.

Beth - If 3 hours of snow shovelling isn't a workout, I don't know what is. That stuff is heavy! Hope you're feeling better soon

Jackie - Congrats on your 5K time especially with that monster hill? Why do they need such a big hill on a 5K?

Maria - I've started adding an egg back into my breakfast. I definitely agree with you on it helping to keep you feeling full.

AFM - I tried a bowl of 3 to 5 minute oats before doing my LR yesterday. It was definitely heartier than my regular instant oats. I also ate a hardboiled egg, a slice of ww toast with natural peanut butter and an apple. I didn't feel hungry during or after my run but I did run out of gas. I did run a new route that had a lot more hills especially toward the end but I'm thinking I didn't eat enough sugar. Maybe I should have put jam into my oatmeal instead of sugar free syrup. Eating the right amount of food seems to be a tricky balance and a lot of trial and error.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Good Morning Everyone,

Vicky: Sounds like you are making some good changes to your diet. Curious that you ran out of energy. Maybe a simpler carb like a glass of juice would help that. Or maybe it was the extra hills.

Jackie: Congrats on the 5K PR. Taking 1:30 off is a lot for a 5K. Good luck avoiding the cookies. It must be hard having your DH have cookies while you try to give them up.

Maria: Good job with the free weights. It’s good that you can work it in while watching BL. I’m a few episodes behind right now. I just haven’t found time to watch it. Are you ready for the snow? I have to admit that I get as excited as my kids about a snow storm even though I know it will make driving and running harder.

Connie: I’m glad you are able to find some good whole grains to eat, but bird seed? I had to laugh when I read that. 152 lbs of sugar, that is stunning. I can just picture my counter full of 5 lb bags of sugar. Yikes!!

Beth: It’s too bad that people gave you a hard time about low-carb. I'm not a big fan of the low-carb thing so I hope I never said anything that sounded like criticism. If it worked for you, why does it matter to anyone else? I think you are right that you need more carbs because of all your exercise. The trick is to eat the healthy ones without creating cravings for the not so healthy ones. Hope the cough is better. Looks like you’ll get the chance for more snow shoveling x-training.

Corinna: Congrats on reclaiming your graduation dress. That is a big victory. I hope you find a groove for your Princess training. Sometimes it just goes like that.

The new medicine schedule seemed to be working for a few days then I had 2 awful days. I’m finally starting to realize that this may be a long process, so I need to be wiser about how I’m handling it. I’ve been telling myself that cookies and crackers help my stomach to feel better, but truthfully, it only feels better for just a few minutes, so it’s almost not worth it especially compared to how awful I feel now that my pants are all tight. I’m trying to switch to healthier foods. I’m not going to worry right now about the quantity of what I’m eating just figuring I’ll be better off in the long run with healthier choices. I still have to wait 2 weeks for the endoscopy so hopefully that will answer some questions.
I’m continuing to stick to my scheduled work outs. I feel like I need one thing that’s going well in my life and since right now it’s something I can control I’m concentrating on that. I ran 14 miles yesterday. My pace was a bit faster than I ran 2 weeks ago so I was happy with that. My legs are really tight today. I need to start stretching even just a little.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Good morning Everyone,

As Vicky noticed, THERE'S Sugar in EVERYTHING. I buy a 15 grain, 100% Whole Wheat Bread, right? Sounds really healthy, right? Second ingredient after Whole Wheat flour is....SUGAR! :scared1:

So here's some more tips!

Sour dough bread! No sugar!! It uses natural yeasts to rise. If it has sugar, it's not real sour dough.

Whole wheat flour is avaible for making patries!! It's called Whole wheat pastry flour..which makes perfect sense! You can use it to make light and fluffy biscuits, cookies, cakes, etc!

Look for grams of sugar on the food labels. It only takes 4 grams of sugar to equal 1 teaspoon.

Manufacturers are trying to take advantage of you by playing on the word "Natural". Raw Sugar, blond sugar, brown sugar, turbinado sugar, and yellow D sugar, are all refined sugar!

Cinnamon and Vanilla make things taste sweeter without adding sugar!

I have my cookbook about grains selected and on it's way.

Hi Leanies!

Cindy - I'm thinking I need more sugar for that particular route. It was such a strange feeling that I couldn't push myself faster than 12 m/m for the last little bit. Mentally I felt good... For my 15 miler this weekend, I'm going to stick to a flatter route just to get the miles in. The weekend after when I flip back to the 13 miles, I'm going to do the same route again but eat the bloks every 5 miles to see if that makes a difference.

WTG on the 14 miler and for keeping up with your workouts. It's really tough when your stomach is acting up. Do supermarkets near you carry Wasa bread? It's lower in calories (and sugar, I think) than regular crackers. The only thing is that it tends to be higher in fibre (and lower in taste) so I'm not sure if that would upset your stomach. Just do what you have to do to keep yourself feeling good and your stomach settled. Once you figure out what's going on, you can make adjustments to your diet.

Connie - Yup, sugar is in everything. I recently read somewhere that food manufacturers are splitting up the types of sugar they use in a product. The reason is that each individual sugar quantity might be smaller than the grand total so they can put sugar lower on the ingredient list  Sneaky. Thanks for the tip on the sourdough bread - I didn't know it wasn't made with sugar.

AFM - I ran 2.5 miles this morning. It started out slow but I saw another runner and paced him for a bit though he was going a lot faster than I was. I tried not to let him disappear until I made my turn. I also did my usual Monday gym workout. My PT threw in a new exercise called the renegade row. It's basically a pushup done with weights and then you do a set of rows while in plank position. Not fun. I did ask to skip the burpees because my stomach was feeling a little out of sorts. I feel like I've been having mild heartburn for the past day or so. I took a few Tums and ate a little but that didn't seem to do anything. I'm hoping it will pass. In the meantime, it will at least keep me from going snack crazy during Lost.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:
