Here is my problem, thanks for reading ahead of time.

I work in a hair salon as the front desk coordinator. I love my job and I love the people I work with. We are all very close. We go out for everyones birthdays, superbowl parties etc.

Two days ago my boss comes to me and says I am doing such a great job, she is promoting me to Salon Manager. I will be managing the salon, not the stylists (they are on commission anyway). I was so excited. I told everyone who was working that day. They were happy for me.

We were extremely busy the next day and I didn't get a chance to tell the remaining 2 stylists, and one was in a extremely bad mood that day, so I figured I would get around to it.

At the end of the night my good friend (stylist) told me that Sue(bad mood stylist) felt the owner should have consulted everyone about my promotion and the other stylist (the other I didn't get a chance to tell) agreed.

I can't tell you how hurt I was by this. I do everything for those people. All of them. I stay late to help them out and I totally deserve that promotion and raise.

I told my bosses daughter (another good friend) and she told my boss (against my wishes). The only reason I didn't tell my boss directly is because she was going out of town and I didn't want to upset her, I thought it could wait until she got back.

My boss had a fit, confirmed with the stylist that told me what happened and blasted the 2 stylists that thought they should have been "consulted".

Now what? I have to go to work tomorrow. Do I say anything to these people? Let it go? See if they say anything? I feel like my good news is now putting me in a rotton place because of these haters (my daughters word).

Why do people behave this way?

Thanks for any opinions.

I'd let it go, but I wouldn't be rude to them, I would act no different.

And don't feel bad.

They are just jealous.

But YOU worked hard to get this promotion. They obviously didn't, or they would have been in the running.

Sure you are "friends" with your co-workers, but this is a "dog eat dog" world.

Congrats on your promotion!!! :thumbsup2

Congrats on the promotion! I don't know about anybody else, but I have never worked anywhere that allowed the employees to have a say in who gets what job. Sounds like entitlement mentality to me.

I'm really sorry you're hurt by it, though. I have been in a somewhat similar situation and it really sucked.

First of all GOOD FRIENDS do not tell you negative statements to make you feel that bad.

Second, that other girl ...one statement... Misery loves company or Hurting people HURT people.

They're not HATERS, they're people who feel like they've been rejected or not treated important, and they reflect it on you.

Hopefully you can work this out. I'm afraid the boss made it worse for you. It's traumatic enough to work with people who have issues but when they've been SPANKED... :scared:

If nothing else, you can call on

TABITHA!!!! She'll fix that place up QUICK!!!

Ignore it. As Luvstoscrap said, promotions are not open to a vote, they are not popularity contests. Your employer spoke to them so I doubt there is any confusion as to the appropriateness of their comments.

The craziest thing about the situation is that these stylists can never have the position I have. They don't have the time to take care of the things I do during a course of the day. They can't schedule clients by phone while coloring someones hair (KWIM?), talk to all the vendors, do the ordering, cover the front desk and handle the website. :confused3 They need to being doing the job they were hired for.

The reason the owner promoted me was because she couldn't do it all and take clients at the same time.

salon drama...oh how I miss it. NOT!

Congrats on your promotion. Seems to me since they are stylists they weren't even up for the promotion so why would they care or be anything but happy for you.

It really is a shame the owner did not call a short meeting and announce this herself to the group. And it is a shame you did not get around to telling them before the day was over.

Congratulations on your Promotion :goodvibes ...

If I were you, I would just go into work tomorrow as you always do and do your job as you've always done ... I wouldn't talk about what "she said", "you said", "he said" etc., anymore ... that was in the past and tomorrow starts another day ... (and I'm sure another new topic of conversation will take center stage) ... just be yourself and have a good day :goodvibes ...

:thumbsup2 They should be happy the owner has a front desk/manager. Some shops have to answer the phone themselves. Where I used to work, we had someone every day but Monday when I first started there. It was pain to be doing a cut or color and have the phones ringing off the hook. I begged for and got someone hired to answer the phones. :thumbsup2

I know, the owner should have called a meeting, but she promoted me, was off the next day and was leaving on her trip.
I am also not a showy look at me person. I did tell the stylists that were around that day, but I am not the type to walk up to someone and toot my own horn so to speak.
The only appropriate reaction those stylists should have had was coming up to me to say congratulations on my promotion. Any other statements are childish and not appropriate.
I really hate that they put me in this position.

Welcome to management. Someone is all ways going to be unhappy about decisions made. Put on your thick skin and act like you didn't hear anything about their complaints. Be as friendly to them as you were before

:thumbsup2

It might be uncomfortable for you for a while, but it really isn't YOUR problem. Those two sound immature and unprofessional.

That is also crazy. Before I had my kids my career was in management. I managed a retail store for 10 years. So not only did I deserve the promotion, I had done a similar job in the past. The only difference was I managed people at my other job, this job is not managing the workers.

The only thing i would have done differently was not tell the boss's daughter if you didn't want it to get back to the boss. When a person complains about something to another person it always gets out! :) You didn't do anything wrong, but you should have expected that it would get back to your boss by speaking to her daughter. In the future, just remember to hold your peace until you're ready to go to your boss with something.

Meanwhile, take the high road and just behave normally around the two problem stylists. Likely they'll change their tune when they see the other stylists accept you and your new promotion.

Congrats on the new job! ITA with the PP's and say - ignore the haters, they are just jealous.

Your right, I shouldn't have said anything to the bosses daughter, but I was hurt and couldn't understand why this stylist would behave that way, I thought we were friends. I am in no way "competition" for her.

Either way, the boss would have said something, now or later.

So, when did that stylist acquire part ownership of the business?:lmao:

Don't let it worry you. She's the one on thin ice.

Thanks everyone! I will try to update later tonight.
Actually I was hurt yesterday, but now I am angry.
How dare those stylists ruin my good news.
I will keep my feeling to myself UNLESS something is said to me.

I will simply say "discuss it with the owner when she gets back", I have more important things to think about like doing my job. :rotfl2:

UPDATE - went to work, my boss is still away and the 2 stylists that got in trouble were falling all over each other to be nice to me. I acted my normal self. They will be getting a talking to when the owner gets back I am sure of it.

Back to work as usual. Thaks everyone.

I'm glad it seems to be going better! :thumbsup2 Oh, and congrats on your promotion!!!!
