Does anyone know if there are any legit work from home companies? I am looking to make a little extra $ but I am afraid of scams.

anyone have any experience in this?

thanks

I have a friend who stuffed envelopes last year. Did around 12,000 at Xmastime, mailing out Xmas greetings to clients from companies. It was legit! She and her Mom did it together; they'd watch soaps and stuff the envelopes. Made some Xmas money.

Are you thinking about something like Pampered Chef or Discovery Toys? I wouldn't call them "scams", but in order to make money off of them, you have to "recruit" people under you and you really have to be pushy to sell the items.

I like the envelope stuffing thing. That rocks!

I am in sales and work from home several days a week.. since my job is visiting customer, setting appt, determine the customers need, writing proposals, etc It works out well that I can work from home or the road..
Is that what you are asking about??

Don't know how much you are looking to do from home but I hear insurance companies are now starting to set up people at home. For instance, adjustors and so on. There isn't a real need for lush offices for all of them when most of their time is spent on the road and on the phone... The envelope stuffing idea is a good one. I like that!! I wonder how they feel about child labor?!?!? :teeth:

pop daddy you are funny! If I got a real job it might interfere with my computer time and eating my bon bons!

(just kidding I have 3 kids so I was trying to do something at home so I didn't have to put them in daycare)

To the others the envelopes sound good. The discovery toys etc is not for me as I don't like to sell things. (feel funny even asking friends to buy my dds girlscout cookies)

what I really wanted to know was the jobs you see online or in magazines that talk about medical transcribing etc. but thanks for your replies.

i work from home, but started out in the office and when i had to move, they kept me on as a contractor (no benefits, but I'll get those eventually from my husband)! my case is pretty rare, you have to find a company that is willing to allow this and a job that can be done solely on a PC and online.

anyway, i was just thinking you could take in a few kids if you wanted to stay home with yours. I know that 2 kids in the Atlanta suburbs can go for $1500+ a month (my sister pays $10/hour for a nanny for her two kids and that means $2000/month in childcare costs). that's a pretty good chunk of change for being a caregiver (which you already are!).

tassie42, there are legit work-from-home jobs but most of them require schooling/equipment. I am a medical transcriptionist but I did have to spend some money to go to school and buy some equipment. There are on-line schools though, which is what I did, and have been working at home now for 4-1/2 years. Check some things out. You might be surprised. There are also data entry jobs and such. Good luck!

So now my question... How do we get anything done if the kids are home? It's all I can do to keep up with kids/house, and I only have two! Breaking up their arguments has become a full-time job since school let out!

A woman I knew who did medical transriptions worked late at night. She was a night owl anyhow and worked a few hours every night in quiet while hubby (who had a normal 9-5 job) and the the little ones slept. :)

Would you mind telling me who you went to MT school with? I've been checking into this. Was it hard to find employment?? How long did the course/schooling take?

Thanks!!

My situation is exactly the same. My company doesn't believe in associates WAH, so I'm technically a consultant & not an associate. No benefits, but get them from dh's job anyway.

It's hard to find a work at home job that doesn't involve selling. Sometimes you can get a customer service thing, but you would still need someone to watch your kids. I have 2 friends who work at home full time, but their kids are in school or daycare until the end of the workday (5ish?).

I've been looking for something since DS was born almost 4 years ago. For now I sell Avon and I just joined a new home party plan from Crayola. I don't yet know how well that will work, but because there is very little market saturation at this time, it seems like a better bet than Pampered Chef or Discovery Toys. The products are fun, too.

Good luck with your search!

gillian, thanks for that link they had a lot of interesting things on it. the medical transcripts sounds too complicated with my kids around and there is a $4000 start up cost.

I saw something on the job lists there that said MYSTERY SHOPPER I thought that sounded neat!

I do mystery shopping too & it's fun! But also hard with the kids sometimes. There is a great website for that also. If I can remember it, I'll PM you.

:)

I've started making gift baskets. I'm still in the practicing stage, but I'd like to do it as a business soon. So far, I'm creating and giving a gift basket to each of the new families moving into our neighborhood. It's a great way to meet new people and it allows me to practice. I'm enjoying the feedback. I might eventually do gift baskets for tourists staying at area resorts. It's fun to do.
