work at home?

You might check around with your local hospitals, doctor's offices, and clinics. I know someone who transcribes at home and she went straight to the hospital and they hired her to work at home. She calls in to a special line and hears the dication and types it on her computer and then emails the transcription to the hospital. It does help if you already know how to type.

The insurance adjuster job requires a license and training hours and a sponsor in some states. I have looked into that. I would have had to already been working for an adjusting company and they would certify that they were giving me on-the-job training, plus outside training and testing, and then pass a licensing test.

My husband works from home and I am his "support staff". I do his transcription and billing. I have to admit that I am getting more than a "bit" punchy having the kids and the hubby home ALL THE TIME this summer.

Our family has done mystery shopping before. The Pizza Hut regional manager was in the same office building as my husband at one time and we would "mystery eat" about 4 times a year. That was fun. I have not been able to find a mystery shopping "position" around here that I do not have to pay to participate in.

Wow. That mystery shopping thread has some list! Thanks for sharing!

I've been really lucky to find companies that have alternative work environments which are flexible for stay at home moms. Right after my daughter was born I went to work for DirecTV DSL/Telocity. I did customer service for them. They would route the calls to my business number and I would just log on to their mainframe. A lot of companies are realizing that outsourcing customer service people who work in their homes is pretty cost efficient b/c they don't pay for the overhead or the maintenance of individual pcs. So I would advise you to look into telecommunicatoins companies, credit card companies or anyone else that gets large volumes of calls for customer service or ordering. (Unfortunately, DirecTV DSL didn't make it through the merger with EchoStar.) Getting my dsl and directv for free was a nice little perk.

Now I work (from home setting my own hours) as a public relations analyst for the Detroit Big 3. My marketing firm sends me all the PR clippings, car articles, etc and I code them into files and email them back. If you are in the Chicago area PM me and I'll give you more information.

The point is, there is more out there for stay at home moms besides direct sales and making crafts in the legitimate business world- you just have to be willing to do a little leg work.

Good luck! Being able to stay at home with my kids and still bring in some money for the household really is the best of both worlds.

I would venture to say many of us are in the same boat -- at home with the kids but looking for something to do...whether it be due to boredom, financial gain, or tax purposes. Keep those ideas coming as I, for one, am very interested!

So now my question... How do we get anything done if the kids are home? It's all I can do to keep up with kids/house, and I only have two! Breaking up their arguments has become a full-time job since school let out!

A woman I knew who did medical transriptions worked late at night. She was a night owl anyhow and worked a few hours every night in quiet while hubby (who had a normal 9-5 job) and the the little ones slept. :)

I was very lucky to get a job at my DH's company. He writes software for Attorney's and they needed somone to write reports. I had experience in this so I was hired part time. I do it from home all through email and online. I have 2 children who are both in bed by 7:00. That is when my worday starts. Sometimes it can be hard to get motivated but for the most part it is great. Good luck.
