Woohoo! We cancelled cable!

Congrats!! We've done that before on and off for a total of about a year and a half.

I wish we could do it now. But my 11 year old son is REALLY into sports now so he and my DH get a lot of enjoyment out of watching together. Unfortunately, many games (all sports) are on ESPN channels or other ones that we don't get even if I cut to basic cable. If not for that, I'd cancel tomorrow.

I actually think it's better for your kids, along with your wallet, to nix the cable. :)

Try a website called:

ESPN3

ESPN broadcasts events on there or has them on "Replay". A guy I work with watch College Football through that.

I know dumb question, but what exactly is ROKU again? Does it take the place of the cable tv channels? Thank you! Brunette

It's a little black box you can buy that hooks up to your TV so you can stream Netflix, Amazon on Demand, and some other stuff. Costs around $70-$100 or so, depending on which model you buy.

Is it possible you are getting free cable and they forgot to disconnect you?

Unfortunately, we don't get ANY channels that way and will have to go with a rooftop or attic antenna, which we still aren't sure will work. I need to buy one that can be returned if it doesn't work!

Our DTV contract ends in April and I plan to cancel May 2nd as we leave for our Disney vacation. If they offer me a great deal after canceling then, I may reconsider, but at this point, we too would like the extra $85 in our pockets. It would pay for a base line Apple computer desktop we want to purchase!

Dawn

You can use this website to help you determine what type of antenna to get:

http://www.antennaweb.org

It will show you the channels that you should be able to get, and what type of antenna that you should need.

Thank you so much! Sound so much cheaper than cable. We're currently paying $89.99 for internet, cable and phone, with VERIZON. Maybe I should just get another internet provider, cancel the phone since we have cell phones, and look into buying the ROKU. That would save us a bunch of money. If you look at the big picture, we're paying $1080 a year for internet, cable and phone! TOO MUCH MONEY!

Thanks for your comments.

I'm not quite done with cable...yet. I love my food network and diy network to watch on the weekends. But I do want to downgrade the cable package, that should drop our bill some. Netflix is okay but they don't have a lot of the tv shows I want to watch for instant viewing yet. I need to check out hulu and the network websites and see what I can get from them.

You are so welcome!

We are waiting for our alarm contract to expire in August and then we'll switch to a monitoring service that will use our cell phones instead of the land line. It will cost less than our current monitoring service. Since we'll be getting rid of the land line it will result in an additional savings of something like $40/month! We can't wait! Woohoo!!!

We are canceling ours, too- DH just has to drop off the box on his next day off and it will be canceled and save us $100/mo.

He bought the Roku thing off amazon so that has Hulu, Netflix, etc.- not sure exactly how it works but it's fine.

We would always scroll through our 500 channels and not find anything we wanted to watch so it was getting ridiculous. I mean how many channels do I need playing the same Real Housewives reruns and 1 star movies over and over?

Me too! i cancelled cable a month ago, stood with the internet. after paying netflix we are saving 75 bucks a month! and we dont miss it at all:cool1:

wow I really need to lower my cable bill after seeing everyones really low bills on here...not so sure i am ready to get rid of cable but ...to lower it...so ready am calling Verizon tomorrow and getting them to lower the bill

Our Roku came today! So far, we are beyond thrilled - so easy to browse and find interesting options. I was not "show loyal" other than Real Time and CBS Sunday Morning, but I can't find them yet. As for replacing the Cooking and Food Channels, I have found that Chowhound has a channel - LOVE IT! And Wine Library TV - woot!

Bonus - our iPhones are the remote controls.

Goodbye DirecTV!!!

The more I investigate, the better Roku is looking!
