wonder why it took so long for disney to make a decision

It is possible there could have been internal disagreements about setting a new (likely unrealistic) date or not, how long to pay CMs, etc.

Regardless of the reason it took so long, I’m glad they are being realistic and honest, and not setting false hope with another unrealistic date.

Honestly, its chaos. There are so many guidelines (federal, state, local) and a lot of the laws and regulations put into place recently are very unclear. There is no clear right or wrong, so Disney is likely just trying to find its way in the dark like everyone else. When there is no precedent to base decisions off of, then it will take more time than most would expect. It is not just Disney that is taking a very long time to make decisions, all companies are seeking out as much guidance as they can before making a very difficult financial decision, especially when most guidance is conflicting or different. Even the local counties of FL surrounding Disney made announcements at different times, so Disney has to take each into consideration and that keeps delaying any decision they try to make. I do not envy any one in that position right now!

they can't make a decision until the government does. schools haven't been canceled for the year yet. as soon as the curve flattens they will open with caution . then crazy thing is if they open the park will be pretty busy. stay safe everyone.

At least in California the current shelter in place (stay at home order) is until further notice. Disneyland has no choice but to follow this. So there was never a question whether Disneyland was opening on April 1st, it was already a given that it wouldn't.

In my experience the higher up you're in a company the more irrationally optimistic you have to be. I assume ridiculously high levels of optimism.

I think it’s a good move on their part.

The virus is going to do what the virus is going to do.

Cases are exploding right now in California and Florida. No one in the US is at the peak of the virus, yet.

So it's understandable that it remains closed and has no definite reopen date.

I didn't figure they'd open before schools did. All of our local museums and places that kids might congregate keep extending their closures to match the local school districts.

It is chaos and only three weeks ago if you had told most of us what things would be like today, most of us would not have believed it.
So OP I disagree with your thread title. I don't think Disney "took so long".......they just didn't have enough information to do more.

If you mean how long it was between the first closure (March 16) and the announcement closed until further notice, I suspect it was many reasons. The writing has been on wall for a while, but it's tough to pull the plug. It also bought time to get the CMs (phone and guest services) set up to work from home to handle another flood of cancellation, changes, refunds, etc. calls.
